Best late night in the East bay, worst service in the world 3/26/2007

Chinese restaurants in general have a penchant for terrible service. And although Daimo is a nicer sit-down, the staff is both overworked, and idly lazy. Try not to go there on a weekend night during rush hour. The same staff that will take their time handing you the check will take their time clearing tables and getting others seated. I've been there several times, and have just gotten used to having to motion to my waiter (or having another employee track my waiter down) if I'm ready to order or if I'm ready to leave. I honestly think you could live there and nobody would bother you.\r \r Terrible service aside, the food is definitly a notch above what you'd get at those 2-item-combo places. Their menu is diverse and replete with all kinds of Chinese dishes. I would recommend any pork or duck dish, but I hear the seafood is excellent as well..\r \r Prices are moderate, and match the quality and quantity of the dishes. Which is to say, you're not really getting any kind of deal here. Average just under $10 a dish. Parking is also stupidly a problem for the Ranch 99 mall area during the weekends, so just a heads up there. And like a true Chinese restaurant, a good place to take a group.\r \r What Daimo lacks in service, it makes up for in tasty dishes. If you go there, prepare to track down your waiter if for everything from a glass of water to the check, but do go there. Pros: Food dishes, late nite hours Cons: Bad service, prices are so-so more

Good food - prompt seating 11/7/2006

This great Chinese restaurant, near Ranch 99 supermarket, has some of the best Chashu (BBQ pork) in the bay area.\r \r The waiters/waitresses are prompt and quickly let you know what the specials are for the evening. For a while the special was some of the best soup I have ever had at a Chinese restaurant, Winter melon soup. The wonton soup, JaJa Mien, Special Pork, Duck, and Chow Mien are also very good.\r \r Also surprisingly they serve dim sum (from the menu) through out the day. The shumai and Pork buns are very good.\r \r Good for groups of all sizes. It can get loud at times when it's crowded. Not recommended for a romantic date.\r Pros: Great food, Service, Open till 2am almost daily Cons: Loud when crowded, Parking at peak hours and weekends more

excellent food, price, and service 2/16/2006

This authentic chinese restaurant boasts a long and varied menu, with an additional dim sum menu available before 3PM. The portions are enormous and the dishes are well-priced. Chow fun with black pepper beef is surprisingly light and loaded with meat, for only $7.50, and one order is enough for three people. Service has steadily improved and, while parking might remain a problem, you can't compete with the only restaurant in the area open every day til 3AM! Pros: inexpensive, open late Cons: parking more

One of East Bay's Best Chinese Restaurants 6/3/2005

There's a reason why folks from Sacramento come down here to eat. Daimo makes nothing other than simply straight-forward, quality Cantonese dishes, well prepared. The pea sprout leaves vegetables are very fresh, and the wonton noodle soups are well flavored, with the noodles maintaining the proper crunch yet soft texture. Try also the fried pork with mustard greens. The only weaknesses perhaps are some of the clay pots, which tend to utilize too much oyster sauce and overwhelms the tasty meat/seafood bits inside. The restaurant is crowded on weekends, but it's open past midnight, a plus for late-night eaters. Pros: "Authentic Cantonese" Cons: Crowded, Noisy more

TERRIBLE SERVICE 3/8/2005

The service was TERRIBLE. The person whom sat us never smiled nor said a word. We asked for water, she frowned and literally threw the water on the table. It took 15 min before the 'hostess' took our order. We waited for another 20 minutes before our wonton soup arrived at the table. There were 8 other tables and at least 4 people waiting on tables, they were not busy. There were 4 people whom came to our table, each time it was a different person and lastly I requested hot mustard and it took near the end of the meal to have it brought to us after another reminder. The food wasn't too bad, but the service will make this that last time I go to this restaurant and I will deter anyone who is willing to go there and try the food. Food does not make the restaurant. Cons: Service, Attitude of Staff, Long wait Time more

Excellent food, great value 11/5/2004

Daimo is one of the best places to get higher-end Chinese food, particularly seafood. The dishes are generous, delicious, and served quickly. Compared to other Chinese/Asian restaurants, this may be a bit expensive, but in a broad comparison it is a great value. I highly recommend the deep fried crab or lobster. The vegetarian dishes are also quite good. Plan on spending $12-16/person for a fulfilling family-style dinner. They also have a location in San Leandro that is just as good but less crowded. Pros: food, value, service more

when u want chinese at 2am 10/21/2002

Food is excellent. My Girlfriend and I ussually eat there late and the food is excellent. Nothing is too fancy a lot of staples and some interesting things for the daring. Giant Clams, frog, ostrich and many other seafood items held live in tanks. service has come a long way in the last year since I started frequenting this establishment. The won tons are awsome and chunky. You will love the salt and pepper anything (i.e. prawns, pork ribs, seabass, tofu...etc.) It can get pretty busy just about all the time after 10:30 so be prepared to wait by the cold door : ). Pros: fresh seafood, won tons, roast duck Cons: service, cold tables by door, waiting by cold door more

O-V-E-R-R-A-T-E-D! 10/18/2002

What do people find so great about this place? Here's what I experienced (on a weeknight, do less!): Expensive food that's not that great. Forgetful waiters. Rude dining room host. Long lines. Difficult parking. The food was far from spectacular. The entrees were forgetable. We ordered 4 entrees; the waiter brought 3. We waited, and waited, and finally asked when the final dish was to arrive. The waiter looked puzzled and walked away. Afterwards, the ""host"" came over and asked if we were really interested in getting dish #4 because the waiter didn't put an order in for it. The ""host"" made it clear that the entree would take time to arrive, and that our table was in demand... We left almost immediately, and I've never gone back. There are SEVERAL Chinese restaurants in the East Bay that do Chinese food better and with much better customer service. Pros: Great for yuppies Cons: Horrible service, overpriced, forgettable food more

prawn won ton and bbq duck 7/28/2002

Immense authentic Hong Kong-style menu. Their prawn won ton soup and bbq duck are the best for both quality and price. We saw Bruce Aidells there and he ordered the live black bass ($14.99/lb!). They have greatly improved their service. more
