Excellent service, beautiful place, great food 8/27/2007

I loved this restaurant. Almost everything we had was excellent. They have a very interesting menu, with many items you don't expect to see at a Mexican restaurant. There were eight of us, so we tried several items. The paella was great (yes, paella), as were the taco salad, quesadilla, guacamole, and chicken fajitas. The many seafood items on their menu are also very popular. The flan was the best I've had. I also heard from someone else that the paella was the only paella they have liked outside of Spain. The chile relleno was kind of mushy, but that was really my only complaint. They had 99 cent margaritas that night, and even they were very good!! The service was excellent, with extra attention to the kids (bringing coloring books and crayons, and being very understanding, even when my daughter spilled chocolate milk everywhere). Our server was Jason, who was great. Definitely ask for him if he's available. He went above and beyond in ensuring we had a wonderful evening, and was extremely helpful and friendly. His recommendations were all just as he described. He even brought my 7-year-old daughter back into the kitchen for a tour when he heard she wants to be chef when she grows up. We also met the owner, Carlos, who was very friendly and welcoming and seemed geniunely happy to meet us and chat. The decor is comfortable and attractive, and they definitely go the extra mile to make their customers happy. We sat on the patio for a bit after dinner and it was great -- very relaxing and pretty. I think it's a shame that this restaurant is hidden back from the road -- I hope more people find it. Try it!!! Pros: Service, food, ambience Cons: Somewhat hard to find but worth it more

Horrible Service!!! And the food is so-so 5/17/2006

Like most people, I will try a restaurant twice since they can have "off days". Well, the service here was horrible twice. For example, I had to ask for everything such as refills for water and more salsa. It took them a while for me to order my food and the food came out seperate from my wife. It was not busy that Tuesday night. My order was screwed up and the food was only so-so not worth waiting for. Pros: Nothing! Cons: Bad Service, Bad Service, Pricey more

Something Different for Mexican lovers... 10/7/2005

The menu here is different from any other I have seen, with lots of seafood and traditional Mexican dishes like Enchiladas Moles and homemade salsa. Have been here many times, and I recommend going on a weekday for best service and seating. If you go on the weekend, MAKE RESERVATIONS!!!! Always busy, but staff still takes time for each customer. Wine selection and margaritas are excellent. Best dish here: Tequilla Shrimp. Save room for the flan! Tastes like vanilla cheesecake with a less "jiggly" texture than others I have tried. Pros: Family owned, Exotic menu, Great food Cons: Smaller place, wait on weekend more

Major Decline 9/7/2005

This place was great when it opened but over the past year or so there has been a major decline. The management has changed and it seems like the family is no longer involved. At the same time, prices have increased and the quality of the food is very uneven. Staff is indifferent and mainly seem interested in selling overpriced specialty margeritas. Very sad to see. more

MMMmmmmm... 8/30/2005

d'Castellanos is AWESOME. Small, family run, super-friendly servers who recognize us when we come in (we eat there a lot...) and great, authentic mexican food. This is NOT taco bell - Enchiladas with Mole sauce and the Orange Tequila Shrimp are my favorite dishes. The entrees are reasonably priced and not too huge, like the massive portions so many restaurants serve now. Perfect! :) Pros: good food, friendly staff, perfect portions more

Truley Mexican 4/30/2005

Excellent Mexican food. Anytime I see mole on a Mexican menu, I know that the restaurant is not a run of the mill Chi-Chis. The inside seating was very nice not too cramped. They also have a small patio. Chips, tacos and tortillas are all hand made and fresh. Portions are large and fairly priced. The chocolate mole was excellent. They have a wide selection of fine tequilas and margaritas ($7-$11 for a 16 ounce glass depending on the type of tequila). The jumbo margarita (28 ounces) makes the drinks a better value. Service was fine, but it would have been nice if we each had been served a separate bowl of salsa and offered a refill on our chips before our entrees arrived. Our bill for two was $54 which included two entrees and two of their best jumbo margaritas ($15 each). They are in Happenings. Pros: Parking, Excellent Food, Casual Cons: Bit high on drinks more

Something Different 1/31/2005

It was surprising to find one of the best Mexican restaurants in the entire metro area in a strip mall in the northern suburbs. This place is worth the trip though because it offers a good variety of authentic Mexican dishes that are not found at most other restaurants in this area. Our group had a good time and the food was excellent. The margaritas were over priced and took away from the affordability of the restaurant. But overall this should be a must stop on anyone's list who enjoys tasty authentic Mexican dishes. Pros: Authentic, Affordable Cons: Overpriced margaritas more

  • The Scene
It's a mystery: How did one of the Twin Cities' most unique and authentic Mexican restaurants end up in a suburban business development surrounded by big boxes and chains? White Bear Lake just got lucky, it seems. D'Castellanos serves excellent Mexican food in a comfortable, festive dining room run by friendly, bilingual staff who can guide newcomers through a menu that ventures far beyond burritos.

    The Food
If you can resist the basket of hot tortilla chips, the appetizer list offers a refreshing seviche of tender white fish with a sprinkling of lime and cilantro, or chilapitas--tasty little cornmeal boats filled with beans and topped with queso fresco. From there, the menu launches into an assortment of uncommon delights, such as pina rellana--shrimp, scallops, fish and octopus baked in a cheese-topped pineapple. Sopa de mariscos (seafood stew) boasts a smoky tomato base. Familiar enchiladas arrive swaddled in red chili or green salsa.
