Commander Restaurant

My family moved down to Dallas twenty years ago and anytime one or all of us find ourselves in Chicagoland The Commander is a requisite stop. There are two primary reasons: -The open-face roast beef sandwich is something I have yet to find or replicate, and theirs is simply the best. -The cream of chicken soup is possibly the finest concoction of ingredients ever assembled on this earth. My mother, my daughter, and I went to this so-called ""Happy - family restaurant"" yesterday and we were shocked by what happened. We had never been treated so poorly before. My mother ordered eggs benedict, which she loves... She unfortunately didn't like The Commander's version. Anyway - when she had only taken half of a bite of her food and asked if she could order something different - the owner looked her straight in the eye and said, ""No one has complained of my eggs benedict in over 25 years - YOU must be crazy!"" My mother was floored! When she asked if she could order something else, the owner said I will get you eggs - not even offering a menu. So - I stepped in and asked for a menu. The owner repeated ""I GET YOU EGGS!"" and she walked away. When the waitress finally came back to the table, I asked her for a menu and told her my mother did not want eggs - she wanted a menu. The owner then came over to the table and said we were being charged for the eggs benedict {which wasn't even eaten by my mother} PLUS another meal which she had never even ordered. We ended up paying for meals that we didn't get plus meals we didn't order... I WILL NEVER EAT IN THIS ESTABLISHMENT AGAIN AND I HOPE YOU CHOOSE THE SAME. Thank you for your time in reading this!!! Having grown up in NWI, I've been to the Commander more times than I can recall. It is nothing extraordinary, but as far as the privately-owned sit down restaurants go, it is above average. I've never been disappointed with their food, their breakfasts have always filled me up, and the menu (the last time I was there about a year ago,) was very reasonable. As a side note, several years back the management purchased a high-end coffee machine. What a difference. EXCELLENT coffee. EXCELLENT. I don't know if they still have it, but I certainly hope they do for the next time I'm there. Pros: Affordable, decent selection, good coffee Cons: Nothing flashy- just an average restaurant more
