Getting the "Cole's" shoulder 5/2/2010

Went to Cole's today for a quick meal with my wife. After ordering and getting our beer, didn't see our server again for 30 minutes, and this was only after I asked the host to find her for us. The food took another 20 minutes to arrive, and this was not a complicated meal: a burger and a chicken salad. I asked the manager why we'd had to wait so long and he immediately became upset with me, saying people usually wait and do not get "fussy". He also said that the chicken for the salad takes 18min to prepare. When I asked him why it took more than twice as long to get our food, he got annoyed and said " Is there anything else I can do for you?" (read: Stop bothering me). He did not offer an apology nor did he seem the least bit concerned. Arrogance and hostility do not help the atmosphere, especially at a restaurant. I will miss the beer selection, but will certainly not be back. Plenty of other choices in the neighborhood. Pros: good beer Cons: Long wait, cold food, bad service, horrible management more

Rude Hostess, Broken Thermostat & Poor Service 3/4/2010

If you plan on going on the weekend, plan on eating late after a long wait (60-90 minutes). The hostess was rude, constantly making us feel like we were in the way and never excusing herself. We ordered the spinach dip.. it was more of a cheese dip.. and the french dip was undercooked, tough and stringy. Not to mention that I had on a sweater, scarf and coat all through dinner because it got so cold during our appetizer. The bar experience I can imagine is better if you're a drinker... but if you're not, head out the door. Never going back. Pros: Good bar atmosphere Cons: The restaurant is cramped and loud more

The bar is better than the restaurant 8/31/2008

Bar: Ask for the sampler! You can try 4 different 4 oz. glasses of beer for $5 from anything on tap (there are a lot of choices and you can choose even the most expensive beer!) Food: Some of the dishes at Coles are DELICIOUS, but here's the thing: around lunch time you have to be prepared for rather slow service. A few of the sandwiches are just so-so but the entrees are great! The hours are wrong on here: Coles is open until 4 a.m. at least on the weekends but I think also on some weekdays. Pros: Beer selection, Beer sampler, Appetizers Cons: Sometimes rather slow service so only go if you have time to linger more

Excellent wraps 5/18/2007

Been here several occasions and always had great speedy service and never a bad meal. The wraps are delicious and their special selections had different choices each visit. Sitting outside in the summer is the best. Lots of people and very fun. Pros: Outside patio Cons: Parking more

My Favorite Neighborhood Bar & Grill 5/13/2005

Like your favorite pair of jeans, you can count on Cole's for kickin' back comfort and relaxation on a Friday night. Whether it's a cold brewskie from one of the many draft handles at the bar (which, by the way, has a great jukebox), or a satisfying, good old Buffalo portion-sized meal (french onion soup, Dr. Paint's chicken sandwich and the 1104 Elmwood are my favorite, though I'd happily eat any selection from the very large menu), Cole's offers a great time at a great price, and is a signature just-around-the-corner place that makes life great in Buffalo! And for all those Irish to the core (at least once a year), Cole's offers exceptional Irish fare and the absolute best after-St. Patrick's Day parade party in the city. Pros: food, nostalgic atmosphere, the owner/bartender more

The bar dearest to my heart 10/11/2002

Coles is one of my favorite bars anywhere. Bar service is great, prices are reasonable -- good quality and large portions. The only drawback of the menu -- it's nearly impossible to settle on just one thing -- how can you pick between classic wings, beef on weck, and the juiciest burgers in Buffalo? It's a great spot for all sorts of people -- good for families, dates, friends, whatever. It's also a good place for sports -- it is standing room only at the bar during most games, and while it can get a little crowded, it's a fun crowd of enthusiastic fans. Coles also does events in their private room, good for anniversaries or other celebrations. The decor is one-of-a-kind, with lots of local and sports memoribilia -- this is the look that so many chain places like TGIFs attempt to imitate, but Coles is the real thing. Pros: excellent food/value, great bartenders, fun atmosphere Cons: can be noisy, parking can be hard more
