I have to say I had one of the finest meals ever at City Tavern. Pros: Exceptional service & a vast & delicious menu Cons: A bit pricey, but the portion sizes make up for ...

I went yesterday during lunch, I ordered the duck sausage for an appetizer, more like a duck hot dog and the sweet and sour cabbage was just a mushy mess. For my entree braised ra...

My New Favorite Restaurant 4/1/2003

I am a resident of Philadelphia, many restaurants to choose from, but as of last Saturday, I now consider City Tavern my favorite. It was quite busy, however that didn't stop our server from being extremely attentive. As my husband is a homebrewer himself, it was so intriguing to taste the Founding Father's own beer recipes. Our server Cecilia, I believe, even recommended different beers to have with different courses on the menu. The Harp sounded beautiful and the harpist even played happy birthday for my husband. I would highly reccommend this restaurant whether it be a date or a family night out. The restaurant had a nice mix of people all soaking in the ambiance while dining upon 18th century gourmet fare. Pros: Cookbook of Recipes, Ambiance, Excellent Food more

Pseudo-colonial hash joint 2/26/2003

Though City tavern has lovely historic architecture and a great location, it is not a food destination by any means. The theme-park atmosphere (waiters in colonial costumes) and the amateurish service do not justify the high prices. We had to ask for bread, we had to ask for knives, the wine we ordered was slightly different from the wine list without any mention, etc. The mealy, overly cold tomato salad and soggy turkey pot pie crust were mediocre at best. And our server never thanked us even though we remained pleasant and polite and left a normal tip. Cons: Too expensive, too cutesy, lame food more

THE WORST 1/20/2003

I took my friend from out of town, here on her birthday. The service was the worst I have ever experienced in my life. We waited 45 minutes, after being seated to get our first drinks. I can't even tell you how long it took for us to get our meal. If we had an apologetic and sincere waiter I would be less upset about it. But he was just plain snotty. All I asked is for my friend to have a birthday candle in her slice of cake. But he forgot... when I asked him about it he, said to me ""its too busy, for that."" I will never go back there again, and urge others not to waste their time and money. Pros: historical Cons: rude waitstaff, long time for food more

City Trap 9/16/2002

Very disappointing. There was a group of us and none of us were happy with our meals -- the food was awful. The service was terrible and the manager could have cared less that we had an unpleasant experience. more
