A good school, run by a good group. 2/8/2009

As someone who has studied at a few different locations of the Chinese Shaolin Center I can say that the newer reviews are full of whining and spite. The way Instructor Dean teaches is the same way the Elder Masters teach. Master Jason, for all his praise was a good teacher. But he was not teaching what the Elder Masters are. The problem everyone has is you learn a slightly different method with every different teacher and that is ok. I have taken 3 different styles of martial arts since I was 11 and I was rushed in all of them. But the one thing you always need to remember, you are the one taking the class. If you don't want to test yet, you just say so. Simple as that. \r \r I have worked with Master Carr, I have worked with The Elder Masters, I have worked with Instructor Dean and I have worked with Instructor Michael. I have gotten the chance to study with some of the most ranking students under the Elder masters. To give Dean a poor review only because he isn't Master Carr shows that you don't have a great appreciation for the art in general. You can disagree with me as this is only my opinion, but thats how I feel. \r \r The school has come a long ways since Dean took it over. It is much more friendly and open. Classes are convenient and full of a good time. I have been in the art of Shao Lin with the Chinese Shao Lin Centers for many years and I wouldn't want to learn anywhere else. If you are looking for a school that helps the body and mind then stop by the Chinese Shao Lin Center and check it out. Pros: Class times, the people, the art Cons: The school it self could be a bit bigger, but you work with what you have. more

it only took twelve measly months to ruin one of the best martial art schools. 10/20/2008

master jason carr where are you? you are definitely needed. i dont know who to feel more sorry for, the new students who are getting inadequate kung fu training and are being pushed through the tests or the older students who remember master jason and now have to deal with dean. if only i could forget master jasons attention to detail, his emphasis on form and martial application as well as his knowledge of the zen philosophy that underpins all of kung fu, then and only then could i call myself one of deans pupils. more

Look Somewhere else!!! 7/7/2008

This time last year I would agree with the other 2 reviews. The previous instructor master Jason Carr was great. He knew his material, details, applications and was simply a very good instructor. Unfortunately ever since the new instructor Dean Ash took over things have gone from great to sad. The forms have watered down. There is no attention to detail. And if asked questions on applications to forms you will not get an answer. We use to get students who knew their material well and were tested only when they were ready. Sadly, now it is all about the fast track. People are being tested left and right without really knowing their material but rather memory. It is almost like they are being tested for the fees to get money not that they are ready. I am very disappointed. A new nick name has surfaced for our school ""McShaolin"" yes we have a fast food nick name now. I myself regret ever letting master jason go. If you ask me what I am still doing here? Well, once my membership is over I am quitting. I want to learn my material and understand it not FAKE IT!!! I want my belt to mean something. I will be looking for a different school soon and if I were you I would not waste your time with this. I wish master Jason would open a school. Ahhh one can only hope. more

Great Martial Arts School!!! 8/13/2007

Where do I begin. Chinese Shaolin Center was one of the best finds for me. I was looking for a place to learn martial arts get exercise and simply do something for myself. I found this place through a referral. The head instructor Master Jason Carr is one of the best teachers I have come across. The students are such a positive and motivating group of people. There are plenty of adults such as myself and a few younger students. Did I mention that every Wednesday they have Tai Chi, another bonus to the school. I feel as though not only do I learn this great martial art but the exercise that I get is far better than any gym. I feel so much healthier and better shape then prior to me attending. It has been 3 years since I began and I am still learning many new forms and techniques. I highly recommend this school to anyone who is interested in martial arts and doesn't mind getting fit. Pros: No Contracts, Great Instructor, Very Positive Atmoshpere, No Pressure Cons: None that I can think of more

The best Kung Fu in town 6/21/2005

If you have any interest in Chinese Kung Fu you must check out this school! Master Jason Carr is an excellent and talented teacher. The school is enthusiastic, and the amount of material you will learn in time is limitless. The school is one of twelve in the western USA under Elder Master Sharon & David Soard, and one of many in the USA under Grandmaster Sin Kwang The. This school is the ""hidden gem"" of all schools in the L.A area. Some students drive three hours to go to class, it is that good! Pros: Great Value, Great Instruction, Vast Material more
