THE BEST SUSHI IN LOS ANGELES, AMAZING OWNER! 10/10/2010

If you like real Japanese sushi then Chiba is your place. A few pointers for getting the most out of your visit to Chiba: 1. Always eat at the sushi bar, preferably the center where the amazing owner and sushi chef Shig Chiba is usually located. 2. Get there early and be ready to wait for seating. Great things come to those who wait. 3. Chef Chiba is our local Iron Chef. So, for the very best Chiba experience omakase (Chef's choice) is the way to go. There is no need to order just tell Chef Chiba what you would like and he will create the most amazingly, fresh culinary experience you have ever tasted in your life. more

The Worst Ownership Ever 6/25/2010

I have going to this restaurant for 7 years, they have great food and normally really nice service. However, last night we went and had a major confrontation with the owner. He happens to be the sushi chef at the middle bar. He is without a doubt the most arrogant obnoxious person I have ever come across. He fancy's himself a brain surgeon! It will be our last visit there --- too bad because the food is good. Pros: Great Food Cons: Terrible Owner more

My Favorite Sushi Place! 3/23/2010

This is the best sushi ever! Everywhere else is mediocre in comparison. The place is always packed for a reason. People only wait for what is best! The fish is fresh and the portions are large sized. The oyster shooters will make your head spin in all the right ways. The owner, Shig, and the rest of the staff are personalable and never leave you without good serivce. This place will surprise even the harshest critics with the quality of food! Pros: freshest fish Cons: always packed more

in over 35 years...never a bad meal...simply one of the best 9/15/2009

I noticed some critique of lunch to go there...as if there was little regard taken for both packing and quality of food; an absurdity...their lunches to go are a bargain and great for take-out. But that's not where the focus belongs anyway. The patron-founder of this most unique and sumptuous sushi and traditional Japanese dining venue--Chiba-san--whose recent passing has left the operation in the hands of his exceptionally talented son, Shige, and his lovely gracious (and seemingly ageless and tireless) widow--Mrs. Chiba-san--left a legacy of the art that is Sushi and Japanese cuisine. The quality of fish and all other ingredients is remarkably tops, and always fresh. I have never tasted a single morsel of anything there that wasn't. I have, on a few ocassions experienced seemingly unbearable waits for food/service, but this is because when this little spot jumps, it goes ballistic. This kind of food is quite labor intensive and people eat like there's no tomorrow here...'cause it's real good! So, sometimes, things get nuts...and servers might get behind and even forget...there is no such thing as a restaurant, individual, or team that never has an off-night, but these folks are almost always on. The price is right, the portions generous, and the food is consistent and creatively so. A wonderful family restaurant run by a family, nee dynasty. They're not only one of the finest sushi spots in the SFV, but in the entire LA area. Satisfaction is assured...without disappointment, unless, your luck is runnning low...or your self-esteem is. Pros: Lovely interior, exotic aquarium and unsurpassed sushi Cons: Parking's challenging/location unglamorous more

I LOVE Chiba 3/26/2009

Tuna Tataki, Hamachi, Maguro nigiri mmm I just ate there yesterday and I want to go back! Try their original roll very good! It's in the ugliest lil strip mall ever, you have to pray you find parking, get their before the noon lunch crowd, and sit at the bar next to Moto. He is friendly, funny and cute! \r Aregato Moto! Lunch was great and you make a great orange! Pros: Fresh Fish, Plum Wine, Consistancy in good quality Cons: SUPER BUSY During lunch more

BEST SUSHI EVER 11/9/2008

First of all I am surprised to see that someone before me wrote thumbs down to chiba. That should be AGAINST the law. Second, I am part Japanese also, and we all know better than to order sushi and sashimi to go. FOR the ultimate experience of RAW fish you should always eat the restaurant. The albacore belly is by far my favorite and the Akogee and the spicy crunchy shrimp roll- YUMMMMMMMY. I travel all over the world and this is by far the best sushi in THE WORLD. In fact I will be going there at 6pm tonight. Pros: Everything Cons: That they arent open 24 hours :) more

Best Sushi to this yonsei 8/26/2008

I travel often for work and constantly am looking for good sushi. What I do not care for are Japanese Restaurants that are owned and operated by non Japanese. Their seasoning does not match what I am used to. Chiba, hands down has the best sushi that I have experienced. I make it a point to go there whenever I am in the San Fernando Valley. Pros: Sushi Cons: Parking more

thumbs down on lunch combos 8/14/2008

i've heard from many people that Chibas is good. Today , i was finally able to find parking so i decided to order lunch to go. i ordered their combination lunches # C sashimi & beef teriyaki ., #D tempura & chiken teriyaki. The lady said my order was ready the container similar to a pizza box , i was wondering...hmmmm is my miso soup in there? i asked her and she said "" oh, you want it ? its a lunch combination set , it says its served with rice, salad , and miso soup. if i didnt want it i would have said so but she assumed i didnt want it from the get go.... ( i am japanese ) ......@ that point i was dissapointed.\r \r so .... i took it home and had a few of my friends and we tried it. \r \r 1. they put the sashimi ( raw fish ) in the same box which had beef teriyaki and rice ( assuming it s hot off the grill ) sashimi ( RAW FISH ) you have to becareful for it spoils fast . a japanese rest. near by in sun valley puts all sushi, sashimi, rolls in a seperate container . \r \r 2. miso soup.... not even half a cup filled. \r \r 3. salad is just ok......... A good salad whether its just iceburg lettuce the DRESSING is the key!\r \r 4. japanese style pickles were good.\r \r 5.tempura....... sorry to say it wasnt all that. ...........a good tempura is.... IF THE TEMPURA STAYS CRISPY ONCE IT GETS COLD. and of course appearance is important.\r \r 6. the teriyaki..... the portion of chicken was very POOR , the beef was ok... the SAUCE .....\r I""m sorry it was runny and it just wasnt good.\r \r as for sushi ............i have not tried so no comment.\r \r overall.............lunch combinations averaging $9+ tax I WILL NOT recommend .\r i've had BETTER chicken teriyaki & tempura @ a near by sushi rest.\r and their lunch specials and also around $9 .\r \r i will not mention their name but the sushi rest near a famous cleaners in SV is much better!\r Pros: just that its Japanese owned Cons: parking + more more

better luck next time 1/14/2008

I have been going to Chibas for many years now and its always been great. It is my family favorite. My parents ate there and before that my grandparents ate there. Person who didn't like this place must had own personal problems. Restaurant like Chiba have been in buisiness for many years and must have been serving many different types of people and pallette. Staff at Chiba is usually very pleasant but if you are not nice to them, you get the same. \r The restaurant uses purified water for all the foods, including beverages. Special imported soy sauce from Japan, rice oil for fried foods and many other secrets people don't know about.(ask Shig).\r If anyone have problem with Chibas please go find a place to eat elsewhere and stay away so that regulars like me can get a seat. Chiba have been servering the folks with love for 35 years and i have feeling that they will never change. Pros: great food Cons: sometimes too busy more

DON'T GO!!!!! HORRIBLE SERVICE!!! 1/4/2008

Best Spicy Tuna anywhere!!!!! 7/7/2007

This is one of my favorite restaurants. Try any spicy sushi there and I guarantee that you'll never be able to go anywhere else. The regular California rolls (not from the specials) are good. Their lunch boxes are also very good. The tempura shrimp is big and delicious. This is one of the few Japanese restaurants that have good tempura sauce, it's not too salty. The staff is wonderful and friendly. Parking can be hard but the valet is great and not to mention free. He'll let you park off to the side if you're just picking up an order. The restaurant is NOT in a good area, but seems safe enough. The best sushi chef, if you're going to the bar, is straight to the back. They gave us a delicious green tea ice cream with yummy mango mochi hanging off the cup/bowl since we went there for our daughter's birthday. They are not open for lunch on the weekends. Pros: Spicy Tuna, California Rolls, Shrimp Tempura, Staff Cons: Area and Parking more
