So far, so fast... 4/29/2005

I used to go to Chez Zee for brunch once a week, but boy did it fall fast from being a great brunch with consistently great service to a place that seemed like a totally different restaurant from one week to the next. When it's good, Chez Zee is still a great place for lunch, casual dinner, or brunch. But the quality of food and service has gone beyond my threshold of consistency -- I don't bring guests there because I'm not sure if it will be good or bad. The problems I have the most often are orders getting recorded wrong and food arriving cold or out of order. It kills me because there are still great service and food days there, I just wish I knew which days those are. I still recommend it to friends who haven't been there, just with a warning about consistency. Pros: Brunch Cons: Inconsistent more

Could have been better 2/10/2005

We went on a saturday night for my birthday. The Mexican Margarita was like drinking limeaide, and it took quite a while to get the drinks. We had baked brie for an appetizer, it was good but small. We ordered a second bottle of wine which showed up when the meal was just about finished. The chocolate torte was very good. I asked to have my coffee refilled and never got another drop. Service does leave something to be desired. I think they need to hire more people. It would not be on my list for a return trip. more

Good food but loud 1/30/2005

We went for brunch. The food was good. The service was friendly and fast. The only thing that I did not like was the noise level. We could barely here ourselves above the piano. I think that it may be a good place to go during the week but it was extremly loud during brunch Pros: creme burle toast, art Cons: noise, crowded more

Good neighborhood restaurant 11/28/2004

We live near Chez Zee, and we have been several times. The service is always friendly and attentive, and this is a good place for families. However, the food, especially for $12+ per entree, is nothing outstanding. The dish descriptions sound wonderful, but they fall flat - what could be amazing is almost always a disappointment. We've tried several of the cakes, and with the exception of the subtle Lemon Rosemary Cake, they are overly sweetened and under flavored. If you live nearby, it's worth a visit, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it. Pros: Great service, Family friendly more

French food? 6/26/2004

I also went to Chez Zee based on City Search and chose NOT to get the fried pickles. Instead I chose crab cakes (there are 2 and are about the size of hockey pucks). I went there with my girlfriend and since we wanted to have dessert we shared a main course. We chose the tequila-lime chicken based on the review and it wasn't lying it was soooo tasty and juicy (I didn't know that was French). The server was really nice and told us we could save 2 bucks if he brought us an extra plate and we split the dish ourselves, which was great for small appetites. For dessert we chose the coconut-leches cake. If you like coconut and tres leches this is to die for, it is a very heavy dessert and should probably be split unless you want the extra gazillion calories all to yourself. Pros: Great dessert, parking more

salty salty salty 6/10/2004

I found Chez Zee on Austin City search and it was highly recommended so I took couple of my friends there for dinner. The place looked great and our server was really nice. The downfall was the food. We ordered the fried pickles and I have to say it was SOOOOOO salty. We thought it was the batter but it was actually the pickle. They shouldn't call it dill pickle. They should call it salty pickle. I ordered the filet and my friends ordered roasted chicken and jalapeno stuffed cornbread chicken. All of our food was very salty. I requested for medium for my steak and it came out well done and it was salty salty salty. Dessert was okay except the fruit cheese cake. NOT GOOD AT ALL.. Pros: service more

Ms. Johnnie 1/14/2004

This restaurant is wonderful. Always prompt and courteous service. Good place for kids and family or romantic dinner. Love the Chicken with Jalapeno Cornbread Dressing. Probably the best dish on the regular menu. Pros: Lotta bang for buck, i.e. large portions more

Fairly good 7/11/2003

We ate there for breakfast, and I talked my husband into the Creme Brulee French Toast that I'd read about. Even the waitress warned ""it's very sweet"" and he agreed, not to his liking at all...and it's odd, just this huge wedge of bread sitting in syrup (they should definitely serve the syrup on the side). My eggs were overcooked and the bacon under cooked. The potatoes were nothing special. Service was NOT the best, we kept having to find out waitress just to refill our drinks! But the croissants...they were HEAVEN. Pros: croissants, large selection Cons: service, execution more

Best Desserts hands down 2/21/2003

Entrees, appetizers, and service are always good and the ambiance is festive yet tasteful and not overbearing. But this is a place where you can make a special trip just for dessert and coffee. Pros: atmosphere more

Solid dinners, GREAT Brunches 2/19/2003

My favorite Sunday brunch place in town. Service is almost always first rate, and the creme brulee French toast is wonderful. The dinner menu is good, just not up to the breakfast standards. But even a so-so dinner at Chez Zee is sowrthwhile if you have a piece of one of their fresh-made cakes for dessert! There's no better place in Austin for dessert lovers. more

Great restaurant 12/16/2002

This was one of the first restaurants I visited when I moved to Austin. Still one of my favorites. The cornbread stuff chicken breast is great. Desserts are awesome and the smoked olive oil is really good/different. more

Best in Austin 11/11/2002

Great food, great atmosphere, nice waitstaff! I recommend the weekend brunch or dinners. more

Fabulous Restaurant 8/27/2002

Chez Zee is definatly the BEST American Bistro in Austin. It is definatly one of the best restaurants in Austin period! I love the Jalapeno Cornbread Stuffed Chicken Breast and they actually have a GREAT steak! And of course the desserts are to die for! I reccommend the raspberry truffle cheesecake or the lemon rosemary cake ( fabu! ) This restaurant is also extremly well priced compared to a lot of restaurants with the same quality food. With a full bar and wine list you cant go wrong!!! Pros: dessert, price, steak Cons: none, none, none more

Dreamy,Creamy Coconut Pie 7/29/2002

The Best Coconut Pie I've ever tasted! Staff is very attentive! Make reservations on Sunday morning if you plan to have brunch. Pros: Great Service, Friendly environment, Convenient to the Lak Cons: Noisy, pricy more

Heaven To The Taste Buds 7/24/2002

This place is fabulous. I have been here many many times and the food is always wonderful. Creme brulee french toast, lemon poppyseed waffles, omelets, strawberry butter, and the list goes on.... It is like dessert for breakfast. Brunch is always crowded so get there early or you may be waiting a good hour, but the wait is worth it. It is a little pricey, but you get what you pay for. The atmosphere is very austin. Art everywhere, a piano, and a bakery. It is a very sunny feel good place. You can not leave with out smiling. Pros: atmosphere, waiting chairs, waiting coffee Cons: parking, expensive, crowded more
