When dining at a French restaurant I don't expect plastic check-board table clothes. I don't expect the Chefs to be young kids that probably have no professional culinary experie...

this was not like any food I have had in France 7/15/2005

I lived in France for a number of years, and took my Parisian friend to Chez Nous for dinner. We were looking forward to having a good dinner, but we were very disappointed. My onglet à l'échalotte tasted and looked nothing like any we had seen in France, the bread was very disappointing, the wine was over-priced, and the service was weak. The Frenchmen working there seemed to believe that the by acting as aloof as Americans believe the French to be, that this would add to the atmosphere. It just made the experience even more disappointing. Pros: good cornichons, excellent charcuterie Cons: diffident service, too pricey, uncomfortable more

How do you say perfect in French? 7/7/2005

The restaurant's service was friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. They were happy to provide recommendations since this was my first French dining experience. I will definitely return. Pros: Food, Service, Staff more

Not worth the money and long wait 5/27/2005

I was looking forward to dining at this little French bistro, but I was greatly disappointed. From the time we got seated to the time they took just our drink order was almost 30 minutes. From the time we ordered our food to the time we got it was almost an hour. From the time we submitted our payment to the time we got our credit cards back was almost 30 minutes. It was ridiculous. The food is WAY over-priced for what you get - taste was bland and some of it was over-cooked. I don't mind paying if the food is delicious but this food wasn't. Snails tasted like over-cooked mushrooms, the fish was too lemony, shrimp was over-cooked, the creme brulee was runny and the mousse was like dried-out coffee-flavored whipped cream. I would NOT recommend this place for dinner Pros: ambience Cons: expensive, poor service, bland food more

Wonderful Evening 4/24/2005

I took my mother from out of town here for her birthday dinner. I had never been, so was a little nervous that it wouldn't turn out. I couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised! Each of us ordered a different combination from the prix fixe menu- I had Steak Roquefort that was absolutely delicious, and the asparagus soup for starters was mouth-watering. I also highly recommend the chocolate mouse for dessert. Overall, a wonderful atmosphere - the inside is warm, inviting, and you'd never know you were right across from the sixth street crowds. The service was wonderful, everyone from the valet to the manager to the waiters just couldn't have been nicer or more attentive! Thank you Chez Nous for a wonderful evening! Pros: friendly service, unpretentious, great prices more

best French food in Austin 4/7/2005

Chez Nous has been a staple of fine dining in Austin for years. But it pulls off its excellent culinary creations without the snobbishness that you can find in some of the other fine dining places. The atmosphere is decidedly casual, but the food almost always outstanding. In addition to its menu, Chez Nous offers a "menu prix fixe" (fixed-price meal) that changes daily. So for a little over twenty dollars you can choose from three appetizers, three main courses, and three dessert options. This is an even better deal at lunch time, when the price is below twenty dollars. Chez Nous is a great place to have excellent food in a relaxed atmosphere. PROS: outstanding food, fixed-price meal a great deal CONS: parking can be difficult to find, due to its location more

Absolutely delictable! 2/15/2005

I have been eager to try Chez Nous for about 6 months and finally got away from the office at lunch to walk down and try this cozy French restaurant. I was blown away by the rich flavor that came in every bite of my fresh fish and vegetables. It was the best meal I have had in Austin. The price is reasonable ($13.50 + tax for fresh baked ruby trout and veggies). I would love to go on a date there because of the intimate space and candles. The exterior of Chez Nous is inviting and once you step inside it does not disappoint. I take all of my guests to Chez Nous for lunch or dinner without hesitation. By far the best! Pros: food, ambience, price Cons: can get crowded more

A Touch of Nostalgia 10/31/2004

Having just moved here from living for 20 years in Europe, my wife and I were looking for a place to get a little European flair. On the advise of a friend, we popped into the Chez Nous and were pleasantly greeted by the owners. The surroundings made it feel like our home in Europe. And most importantly, the flavorful food. Try their mushroom soup as a starter, and you will know you have come to the right place. This will be a weekly stop for us. DMM Pros: friendly, great food, price reasonable more

Real Deal 9/13/2004

These people know what a bistro is supposed to feel like. The prix fixe is a great deal, and their wine list is varied but accessible. And in spite of the shameful way our local French-owned businesses have been treated over the last year or so, they continue to be the friendliest, most unpretentious food-loving folks in town. more

a favorite! 11/13/2003

We go to Chez Nous all the time and are never disapointed. You can't beat the value of the prix fix menu. The food is amazing, even to my boyfriend who is an aspiring chef. It is one of the few places we go on a regular basis. The service is great, once when I spilled a tiny bit on my shirt and asked for club soda I was brought a perrier from the bar at no charge. Pros: Excellent Value, Authentic Food Cons: parking more

Finally, an authentic French bistro! 9/15/2003

Chez Nous comes pretty darn close to replicating a true French bistro. The dishes are simple, rich and flavorful, and the atmosphere unpretentious. Went here for our anniversary and had a great time. The homemade pate was very good, and the duck confit was excellent. Pros: romantic atmosphere, authentic cuisine Cons: parking downtown more

I love this place! Finally had to get around to posting a review about it. If you like French food, its not going to get much better (especially for the price) in Austin. The atmosphere, and the staff keep you snuggled in tight for a great dining experience. Bon Apetite!! ;) more
