why? 2/28/2010

I never write reviews but feel morally compelled to share with the world my experience at the Chatterbox to prevent future suffering.\r \r Service: we were seated by a relatively friendly guy who immediately took our drink order- so far so good. guy leaves and proceeds to walk aimlessly around the nearly empty restaurant. ten minutes pass with no drinks and we are greeted by a different dude who tells us he's ""terrible at his job"". no big deal. guy takes our order and we are soon greeted by two other employees for no apparent reason. food is delivered by yet another employee who doesn't have my salad. I inform him of this and he says, ""really?"" salad is delivered by guy who is terrible at his job and he says, ""I suck""\r \r food: I ordered the grilled cheese with tomato dill soup. I don't understand how anyone can mess up a grilled cheese (was the first meal I learned how to prepare myself) but the chatterbox did it brilliantly. the focaccia bread was soft, as in not grilled, and the cheese is sort of melted. it was as if they put crappy colby cheese in between two pieces of bread and microwaved it. The soup was cold (I am well under 65 years old)and there was so much dill dumped in that I had to chew it.\r \r atmosphere: Steve Miller's 'The Joker' was playing, mocking and laughing at me\r \r do not eat the food here, don't let your children eat the food. please stay away more

If it wasn't for the food... 2/27/2009

Ok, the purpose of this review is to somehow get the people who run the Chatterbox to change their menu! I live within walking distance of the Highland location. I want to love the Chatterbox. I want to WANT to go to the Chatterbox. But I don't. Why? The food! After giving it a shot many, many times I have had enough. It all tastes the same. The menu looks great but after few visits you'll wise up. Not sure what it is - some herb or spice they put in everything or what. But every dish has the same overriding flavor. It's great for drinks after you've had a bite somewhere else. But I walk past it thinking I wish I could enjoy a meal with my beer. And I'm not the only one in the hood that thinks this. The consensus is overwhelming. I'm not sure about the food at the other locations but hopefully it's not as bad as Highland Chatterbox. more

Best Neighborhood Bar in Town 10/2/2008

I've been to Chatterbox almost every week for the past four months. After having been to Chatterbox, my friends and I can't go to any other bar. The atmosphere is so relaxed; great place to talk, drink, and play Boggle. They brew their own beer and make their own great tasting sodas (ask for a Pepsi and they give you their version of it.) My brother's favorite is an easy lager though a Belgian white is good as well. Fries come with an array of different sauces. The staff is great; making us feel like regulars after the second or third week of going. This place is just the best hang out spot; so much that we can't go anywhere else. Pros: Beer is great, atmosphere is wonderful, games to play more

One of the ""Best bars in America"" 11/20/2007

The Chatterbox get's voted ""Best Bar and Grill "" every year!! They were named One of the best Bars in America and one of ""America's Top 25 Best kept Secrets"". They get this by being unique, consistent and good at what they do. The staff is very friendly and colorful. The food is gourmet bar food made on from scratch breads and mind blowingly flavorful sauces. The grill cheese is made on handmade foccacia, with cilantro pumpkinseed pesto, fresh tomatoes, stringy smoked cheeses and is great when they have the fresh tomato dill soup!!!! Mmmmmm... I can't speak for the other comments, I am sure that the staff is human and a new cook can happen, but year over year they get awards for being consistently good! Pros: Pizzas, Brew Pub, Staff, Wine list, Happy Hour, Music Cons: Karoke (I don't sing well ;) more

Don't bother 8/6/2007

My first time to the Chatterbox in South Minneapolis was a great experience. I loved the fun atmosphere and hole-in-the-wall ambiance. Food was decent with a good selection of micro-brews. I had blown off the bad customer service, thinking it was just our server maybe having a bad night. I have since been there 4 or 5 times, and have had ridiculously horrible service every single time. Bar staff is snotty and service is slow. I have vowed to never return again.... Pros: beer selection (chit chat ale), games, low lighting Cons: terrible service more

Fun and relaxed. 7/6/2007

I've been to the chatterbox only a handful of times. The first time I went I thought it was the coolest bar around. They have fun games that you can play at your table, like Trivial Pursuit, or you can play old school video games. They have a variety of microbrews, which I've never been disappointed by. Their adult grilled cheese was amazing. The lighting and decor is really cool. But the last time I went, my grilled cheese was so disappointing I haven't been back since. The bread was horribly hard and stale, there was practically no cheese, and the fries were like the crumbs from the bottom of the bag. Plus, I had raved about how great the grilled cheese was to my friends, that they all ordered the same thing and were equally disappointed. Maybe it was the cooks first day, or maybe he/she was just having a bad day, but I was mad at the horrible food. It only happened once, so if you're thinking about checking it out, I'd say do it. Just hope you don't get whoever that cook was. Pros: Good lighting, fun games Cons: Apparently randomly bad food. more

not impressed 4/6/2007

my friends and i went to the chatterbox one evening for some late night grub. we were told they had great food. we all agreed the food was less than mediocre and the service was poor. i, along with one of my pals, ordered the ""perfect grilled cheese."" it was perfect if you have never had a grilled cheese before and didn't know that the cheese is to be the focus of the sandwich, not the bread. there was hardly any cheese on it! also, the server had attitude and seemed annoyed that we were even there. at some point during our meal, he must have been cut, but didn't come by to even tell us....our table was just handed over to someone else. and as someone who waits tables, i think it's a basic curteousy to update them with a change in personnel...and not too difficult either. all in all, i won't be heading back to the chatterbox any time soon...if even at all. Pros: good beer Cons: service, food quality and value more

Great Neighborhood Pub 1/1/2007

The chatterbox (south minneapolis) has become my go-to pub for casual date nights or hanging out with my friends. The beer is excellent...try the Chit Chat Ale. The food is unique in flavor and the menu is extensive. A few things to keep in mind...the restaurant gets busy later in the evening, if you have a large group plan on making reservations or going early. Also, there is no happy hour here and the beer is a little pricey. Pros: Games, Beer selection, large menu Cons: average service, no happy hour or specials more

good food and atmosphear 11/21/2006

This is for the chatterbox in St. Paul. It's bigger and nicer thna the Minneapolis original. Lots of video game stations. The food is really good, and the are veg friendly. The grilled cheese is something special. The pizza is also worth getting. Pros: Video Games Cons: A little pricey more

Games, Beer, great food! 11/13/2006

Great for vegetarians and meat eaters alike. Best Fries and good beer selection. Choose from classic games to play at your table for a great relaxing night. Pros: Neighborhood bar Cons: not a lot of tables more

Great Place to go 9/17/2006

I absolutely love this place... well I should say I love the new Chatterbox in Highland as I have never been to the Chatterbox in Minneapolis. You have to go try this place out if you have not been. It is a fantastic palce to get to know people and have fun with old friends. The food is wonderful, the service is great, and the place has character! Pros: Great Food, Service, and Attmosphere more

Unrealized potential @ St. Paul location 6/22/2006

The staff have good intentions, but no follow through. I have given this place many chances, as I live across the street. But despite the expanded menu and attentive staff, my order is often messed up and offers to bring me my drink or my tab are soon forgotten. Also, there's no single server, it seems, assigned to the table. Having 4 different servers would be great, if they actually helped, but it turns into too many cooks spoiling the soup, literally!\r The food is good, if you can wait for them to make it 3 times to correct their mistakes. \r Lots of potential, this just adds to the disappointment. I hope they find their way. The managers always apologize, but after so many problems, hey! I just want my food, cooked, right. Today. Pros: unique menu, atari, not Perkins Cons: not veggie friendly, poor service, inconsistent opening hour more

My new pub 6/11/2006

I like this bar alot, not too keen on the video games on the bar, or at least get rid of the one in the middle so one could at least see the bartender. Otherwise its very comfortable here, everyone seems to help out, I was waited on by at least 3 servers and I don't think I had an empty glass the whole night. Its a fun neighborhood bar, with beer and board games. Pros: The Beer Cons: video games on the bar more

TERRIBLE BURGER but great ambience..... 6/5/2006

Go for the ambience and play games - but don't eat! After hearing from friends that they have great burgers we thought we would try it out. The pub burger could not have been worse. Dry, over cooked - basically terrible. House beer is good. Go for a beer and conversation - skip the food entirely. more

In a word... kitch! 1/24/2006

I totally loved this place - from the moment I walked in (three Photo Hunt machines) - to the tapped tin ceiling. We were served by all three of the staff on hand - all of which totally fit the feel of the place, and were completely available to offer a better table, laugh at your joke, or just suggest the best game on hand! I can't wait to go back! Pros: Lots of games on hand Cons: Street Parking more

THis Place Rocks! 12/5/2005

I felt like moving back into my parents baseements. What a wonderful time capsule. The food was darn good as well! Pros: FUn, Cool, Memories more

Things have changed 11/21/2005

After reading the reviews, I felt that the Chatterbox has gotten a bad rap. The food is decent. They are trying to be a bit fancier as bar food goes, the burgers and fries are tasty. I live very close and its a nice place to sit down, grab a pint, and play a game of cribbage. Not many places offer gaming at table, so that makes this place worth going. I found the staff to be very polite and sometimes a little overbearing. It seems like every server is working every table, so you normally don't see the same server twice. Pros: Neighborbood Locale Cons: Weekend Parking, uncomfortable chairs more

Don't waste your time. 10/24/2004

My first thought was, ""I'm going to love this bar!"" Then I sat down. Not only is the wait staff rude and unhelpful, you end up paying $6 for a beer worth $3. When I went I didn't have any cash with me, so I wanted to start a tab. You'd have thought I was asking them to donate their kidney by the look they gave me. Yeah sure they have am ATM, but it cost $2 just to get your money out. I would rather start a tab and give that money to the servers, if they were worth it. The only reason I keep going back is for the atmosphere and clientele. Its really a shame. Pros: Atmosphere, Casual Cons: , Bad Service more

Hidden Treasure 2/5/2003

One of the most interesting bars in town. This decor, food and people give it so much character. It's tucked away in a neighborhood in Mpls but that makes the crowds a little more manageable. Note that they only serve wine and beer but it's still a great place to hang out with friends on the weekend. Chatterbox is one of my favorites. Pros: Games, Couches, Music Cons: Parking, No Liquor more

Very cool! 8/8/2002

The Chatterbox has Excellent food and a very hip atmosphere. Customer service is awsome. Make sure when you go to try out a Chatterbox...they're tasty!! more
