i was excited to have a real new england sub on my recent visit to the east coast. i even stopped to ask where a local sub shop was, as opposed to the commercialized subwaydunkindonutsbaskinrobbin nightmares that seem to be in every new england town since i moved away 10 years ago. i went to charlie's and ordered a ham and italian with everything except onions. what i remember are great crunchy grinder rolls, dripping in cold cuts, mayo and mustard, oil, salt and pepper, with all the fixings. what i got was suspiciously light in weight. when i opened it, i stared down into a substandard version of a subway sub. it had coldcuts, nasty white cheese with some green pepper, olives, and pickles on a freaking hot dog bun. the counter people were quick and the meat was thickly sliced. however, that was not enough to have made this a worthwhile experience. very depressing to see a local sub shop sell out.
