Chanon Thai Cafe is one my favorite restaurants to dine at. I enjoy the food and delicious selection as well as the ambience. more

My favorite, by far. 4/21/2011

Sure, the service is slow but I think that it just adds to the atmosphere. Just sit down, take it easy and enjoy it. I find the slow service endearing and the food is addicting. They are very vegetarian friendly. Also, just because their service is slow does not mean that it is bad. The staff has never been anything but kind to me and the reason they are so slow is because they are so busy, because they are so good. Family owned and operated, it is a great local business to support. I have never been dissatisfied with the dishes, and I have had plenty of them, except for the meat dishes, but I have been told they are delicious also. Great place to eat. I love, love, love this restaurant. more

PERFECT!!! 10/8/2010

We just moved to the SLC area from Boise, ID. We had a favorite Thai place there that we loved and have missed very much. My brother in law recommended Chanon as one of his favorites here and boy was he right! It was everything I was hoping for! Authentic Thai food, and not a fancy restaurant! LOVED IT!! I ate so much I made myself sick. Then I ordered some sticky rice with mango to take home, and ate that as soon as I got home!!! Can't wait to go back. more

A fading star- brilliant, but needs fuel! 1/28/2010

I have been going to Chanon for many years, and the quality and price have never been a source of complaint. Sadly because of dwindling customers (my personal guess, they didn't say this is why,) they are now closed another day- so now it's just Tues-Sat. I think this is a tragedy, but I think I can understand. People say that the service is only bad for the impatient or those who don't understand family businesses, but I can see both sides. I'm a VERY patient diner, I will wait however long, and understand that sometimes it's new hires, or stress, or busy hours... whatever. I think the problem here Might just be that the diningroom staff might not be perfect for the job, but that happens, and they are SO nice, it's easy to ignore it when they might forget you're over there in the corner, or leave you waiting a little longer for your check. The food is worth lingering over anyway! The dining room is a little packed when all the tables are occupied, I'd especially recommend 'dining in' to the very social diners, as I've had many people at neighboring tables chime in with advice or even ask me questions- very homey feeling and welcoming! I hope this conveys the good and bad. I would say if you don't have the extra time to wait when eating in, Don't hesitate to call your order in to go- not a bad wait, So tasty, Great heat (be careful of ""spicy"" or ""authentic""!) and a very worthy business! :) Pros: Excellent quality, good price Cons: Fewer days open; could use more practiced dining room staff more

Be prepared to wait for good food. 10/28/2009

I LOVE the food here, I've tried several things on the menu and not a single thing has disappointed me. Unfortunately it's usually very busy and you can wait for more than an hour just to get a table. I wish they would expand! Pros: They have really great food. Cons: This place is almost always crowded. more

Best authentic Thai in SLC. 10/12/2009

Honestly, I think it's funny when people say they have terrible service. These are usually the people who have no patience or any sense of what a family business is capable of with limited staff. They're busy, all the time; why? Because their food is AMAZING. They're not a corporate restaurant chain; give them a break! I've never had a problem with service; sometimes things can be slow, but I expect that when I go in - they're usually crazy busy. They always make my meal as spicy as I want = hot, hot, hot. The food always tastes great. I love the people that work there. They know my face and exactly how I like my food. It makes me hungry thinking about how amazing the food is. Pros: They can make my tastebuds burn! Cons: None, really... more

Best Thai Food in Town 9/2/2009

This quaint little restaraunt has the best take-out anywhere in the County. So many of their dishes delight the palette, and they have a wide variety from noodle to rice to potatoe style entrees. Pros: Great Take-Out Cons: Terrible Service more

best thai best family service 12/15/2008

what i love the most about this place are the people that work here. friendly funny great ambiance the food? it's amazing. that's all there is to it. only thing is now the place is so popular it's hard to just come in and dine like the old days so expect a wait for dinner and the weekends! Pros: everything, local heart. Cons: limited seating due to popularity, so come in with max group of 4 more

It really is that good 9/10/2008

Heard about it, went to it, and fell for it. Quaint, good selection, prices are modest,\r servings are plenty, taste is great. I esp. loved the curry chicken, pad thai noodles, \r and don't forget to order the banana and coconut ice cream desert.. yumm-0!\r \r Pros: Taste, selection, ambience, fair prices, location, helpful staff Cons: A little cramped, service can be preoccupied more

I may regret reviewing this...it is seriously Salt Lake's best kept secret. 5/2/2008

The prices are average to slightly high for most dinner dishes. This, however, is more than made up for with the intense and rich flavoring of the meals. It may take a little effort to find because it is an old strip mall; but according to Freakonomics that makes for a great tasting restaurant (lower facility costs = better tasting food). I am seriously addicted to their Som Tum (I'm checking in to Papaya Salad Eaters Anonymous), Green Curry, and an authentic eggplant dish (I can't remember its name). I have eaten at every Thai restaraunt in the wasatch front except two and these are by far not only the best tasting, but most compliant in tailoring or personalizing dishes. You gotta try it...but don't tell too many people I like this ""best kept secret"". Pros: Food, taste, service etc. Cons: The restaraunt is quaint, not elaborately decorated. more

LOVE IT!!!!!!! 11/15/2007

I've been to Thailand a few times and to Thai restaurants around the US and this place is the best Thai food I have ever had!!! Friendly service and delicious food. What more could you ask for? Oh yeah, the food isn't expensive either!!! Must go there to experience it...... Every time I go there I enjoy it more. Every time I take a new friend there they love it as well... On Valentines day I took my girlfriend (now wife) there for her first time and now she begs me to take her there every week!!! It definitely is addictive.... Check it out Pros: Delicious food, fun atmosphere, reasonable prices more

this is the real deal 9/17/2007

If you want real thai food, you need not look any further. This is the real deal, as hot as you can handle it, or americanized, like thai siam. sawadee Pros: real thai food Cons: location, seating is tight and limited, it's a family business more

cozy, delicious and the best in town 5/10/2007

We just moved here from the Portland area where Thai food is readily available. This is the best I've had! Pros: great taste, great price, hefty portions Cons: small locale more

Best Thai food I have ever had (really)! 5/4/2007

I had the pleasure of dining at Chanon Thai Cafe while I was visiting friends in Salt Lake. What really amazed me about the food was how authentic it was (where the heck do you get galangal root in SLC?). I've eaten Thai cuisine in many cities and several countries, and this was hands down the best. And as a plus, if you ask for it really spicy, that's the way they'll serve it to you.\r \r Friendly people, good hours, amazing food. I hope you SLC folks realize how lucky you are! :-)\r \r \r Pros: Amazing food, great service, good for vegetarians Cons: That they haven't opened a branch in Albany, NY more

Fantastic and Authentic! 4/22/2007

My husband and I recently moved to Park City from Washington, DC - a town full of great thai restaurants. We've tried virtually every thai restaurant in Salt Lake and came across Chanon by accident. It is the best we've tried and they are very willing to make the dishes the way you like them. Try the green chicken curry. I like mine with eggplant and they are willing to ""doctor"" it up to my request.\r All around great food! more

Best Thai restaurant, best Thai curry! 2/18/2007

I'm a Thai who has been always looking for a place that can offer 'real' good Thai food and I have to say that Chanon is my #1 place that I'll recommend to my friends or anyone who wants to eat real Thai food! If you want to eat sweet Thai food, don't come here, they don't make sweet food. I've tried every Thai restaurant here and I have to say that nobody can make real good curry like Chanon does. They have the most cozy, cute place. The price is very reasonable. My husband and I fell in love with their place and their food since the 1st time we went there. We're looking forward to go there again real soon. If you want to have dinner there on Friday or Saturday evening, you should go there early otherwise you'd have to wait in long line..outside! Pros: It's the only place that serves you REAL Thai food! Cons: The place can be too small on Friday and Saturday evening. more

Best Thai in Salt Lake City. 2/13/2007

Chanon Thai Cafe is consistently amazing. I've been going there since it opened about a year ago and I've never had a bad experience. It's cozy and comfortable, the staff is friendly and remembers me every time, the coconut soup and noodle dishes are to die for (especially the pad thai, which is usually way too sweet everywhere else I've been in SLC), and everything's fresh in perfect portions. The lunch deal is great, too - my friend and I had lunch and spent around $15 together. I hope this place stays around for a long time. Pros: pad thai, soup, staff, everything Cons: nothing! more

Best Thai in town 10/28/2006

I am a fan of a couple of other Thai places in town, but Chanon is the best in my opinion. It is also surprisingly cheap (especially at lunch). The spring rolls are their weakest offering but their soups and entrees are amazing. The service is excellent although English is an issue sometimes. They are happy to customize dishes to accomodate vegetarians etc. And if you need dinner Sunday night, they are there for you. They do serve wine and beer.\r Pros: Food quality, hours, price Cons: none of significance more

New fovorite Thai! 10/28/2006

I have eaten here a few times, and finally tried the Panang Curry. What else can I say but amazing! Highly recommended. You can call ahead and order take-out, or you can sit down and enjoy the company. The dining room is fairly small, but it has a very nice atmosphere and plenty of charm. I wouldn't recommend taking kids, but it would be very nice for a date or just to go get some great food. I look forward to going back. more
