I was saddened to hear that Dr. Carol Johnson was moving to Boston, to take on their public school systej there. It grieves me, because since she has been here, although the Memphis Public Education System has been plagued with gangs, shootings and other criminal activities, it seems that these kind of occurrences have been less than in the past. Three of our children went through the public city school educational system. They were highly involved in the arts, music, student council and two of them held year book positions as seniors. One went through private school. Three of the four have gone on to graduate from public universitiies and currently work in public or private schools of libraries. One has the gift of being a nanny to other people's children. I can say now, with all earnestness, that if Dr. Carol Johnson had not come to Memphis when she did, my children would have been home schooled or placed in private schools. I am sad to see her go. She has brought a sensibility to the Public school system that it has lacked for a very long time. Her tough love has made her stay here memorable and made her very difficult to replace. How much we parents have appreciated the fine work she had done in trying to bring the city school system up to par.
