AWESOME NEW FRENCH CHEF 5/30/2009

Cetrella is a three-star European Bistro which blends casual elegance with rustic charm, reminiscent of a Tuscan villa with cozy stone fireplaces and sun-lit terraces. It is a Mediterranean dream come true and one of the best restaurants anywhere. It features lusty, flavorful dishes inspired by European cuisine and it has a winning international wine list. The halibut and the cod are prize winners and the soups are really something to write home about. Mother's Day Brunch was an awesome experience. We walked to Cetrella the back way through the neighborhoods. The food was mouth watering. The sunlight was filtering in from above to give the place a dream-like atmosphere. The kitchen crew were in perpetual motion. Everybody and their mother was there. We walked back home through town. It was a perfect day and an unforgettable dining experience! A few days later we had another amazing meal at Cetrella in the evening! We had the potato and leek soup which has become our favorite along with the foccaccia drenched in truffle oil and followed by the foie gras and then we shared the risotto with fresh spring garlic stems puree and asparagus and peas and fava beans and morel mushrooms with a truffle foam while for my main course I had the halibut which had been fresh caught by Native Americans from a ship in Anchorage and flown in and was also bathed in morel mushrooms. This was all accompanied by a superb 2003 Barolo from Serralunga and followed by the local strawberry and mint and shortbread dessert and I also had the rice pudding which was simply mouth-wateringly delicious. It was an awesome meal and afterwards Chef Sylvain Montassier came to our table to talk with us about the preparation of our meal. He helped us make our dessert choices and talked with us about the new and exciting things we could expect on the menu in the weeks to come. We had arrived quite late well after 9:30 PM and did not finish our meal until almost 11:30 PM and by then we were the last ones to leave. We bid goodnight to all the kitchen crew and went home from a most memorable dining experience. We are so very happy that you are back! Pros: Mouth wateringly delicious dishes in Half Moon Bay Cons: There are absolutely none more

Great dining experience 5/28/2009

Friendly wait staff.\r Attentive owner who came by our table a couple times to talk.\r Produce is from the local farms.\r Menu had something for everyone. \r Crabonara was wonderful!!!\r I recommend this restaurant to everyone!! Pros: Diverse menu, local produce more

Looking forward to Cetrella reopening 2/19/2009

Its the one of 2 great restaurants on the Coastside (Cafe Gibralter is the other) and the area just isnt the same without it more

awesome place! 12/8/2008

Well, to be honest I don't really know this place. I'm just testing the site from a facebook connect account. Pros: great customer service more

Wouldn't eat here again with YOUR money... 8/5/2008

Ate here last Saturday night and won't be back. Our clueless, deer-in-the-headlights server took 5 minutes to bring us water (which arrived with no ice), 10 minutes more to bring bread, and (after several requests) another 5 or 10 to bring oil and vinegar for the bread. We had an early reservation, so there were not many people in the restaurant when we ordered. Ordering was interesting. We asked for meat cooked medium rare and were told that the place cooked on the rare side, so that if we ordered medium rare we would probably get rare, so if we wanted medium rare we should really order medium. Huh? We said, ""just bring it when it's pink"". Our wine was brought to us promptly, but it took another 15 minutes to get the salad. The restaurant was filling up by this time, and I noticed than no one around us had any food on the table. I had a good view of the open kitchen and also noticed that no orders were being put up for serving. What were they doing back there? Our server was nowhere. Long after we had finished our salads and nearly finished the bottle of wine, she made a rare appearance and I asked for the check and told her to forget our main courses (it had been more than an hour since we'd been seated!). She came back and said the food would be a few minutes--they were ""a bit backed up in the kitchen"" and that the manager had said they would be on the house. I appreciated the gesture, so we foolishly stayed. We were served a full hour and 15 minutes after we'd been seated. The duck was undercooked. The lamb was overcooked. We left. As we did, I saw the kitchen staff hurriedly dishing up order after order for serving, seemingly all at once. \r \r Don't eat here. The room is beautiful and the wine list is excellent, but these folks don't know how to run a restaurant. Unless they trotted out a whole new crew, I wouldn't trust 'em to make me a taco. Pros: wine list, nice dining room Cons: terrible service, lousy cook more

Food only soso 5/18/2008

Service was really gruff a not effecient. Not enough servers. Food was OK, nothing special. We were there several years ago and the food was better and the ambience much different ( and better!) They remodeled and it's not as warm and comfortable as before. Prices are high.I would not recommend this place. Pros: good parking; live music on weekends; Cons: too pricey for what it is; poor service more

Great Experience! Will definitely go back! 3/14/2008

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the menu, great variety of flavors in the dishes we had....My husband had the duck (delicious) and I had the skate. We were happy to try something new! They obviously have many influences in their cuisine. Our server was very attentive and was great with guiding us through the menu. We had a great time, and will definitely be back again.\r \r A new chef, and a new look! Great!!! Pros: Beautiful restaurant, very friendly and delicious food! Cons: This restaurant is a little far for us, but worth the drive... more

Brunch on Sunday :) 2/10/2008

I had a Sunday brunch at the restaurant with my husband. The atmosphere was very nice. Most of the customers were elder. It was a bit more expensive (Branch menu price was between $12 and $17) than what I wanted it, so maybe that explained why?.\r If you are looking for a nice quiet brunch, I recommend Cetrella Bistro. \r I would like to take my mom next time. :)\r \r Pros: Food more

Great coast side destination restaurant 5/12/2007

My husband took me here for our anniversary and I was quite impressed with the food and service. I had not known of this restaurant - and it was lovely inside both romantic and cozy. We shared two appetizers, the sardines and the hamachi which were both tasty and well presented. I had the vegetarian plate which was delicious and filling and my husband had the Halibut which as also excellent. We finished off with a tasting of 3 of the goat cheeses. The wine list was quite extensive with a range of options to choose from depending on if you are casually dining or there for a 'special' night like we were and want to spend a bit more. Overall, a wonderful experience. Pros: Great ambiance, unique menu more

Don't get a gift card 3/2/2007

I used their online form to order a gift card for a friend. They were completely unprofessional, lost the order, send my credit card info all over the net without security. You will be happier if you take your business elsewhere. Cons: unprofessional, not suitable for business dinners, more

Price is on the higher end but good 9/7/2006

We had very attentive service from our waiter. The menu had a very interesting selection, which I enjoyed. I forgot exactly what but it was some kind of wild game tartare, not for the non-adventurous but it was indeed tasty. more

one of the best dining by far 8/21/2006

It was a very great experience, from the appetizer till the after meal wine and dessert, the mix texture of flavour is fantastic, briliant, a little bit flaw on the presentation.\r \r great ambiance and architecture design , very warm and inviting dining room with mellow music background and lighting setting, make it all a great dining experience.\r \r The only minus i experienced was the service, from the server, i'm sure there was random thing wherever u go, and the timing of each course a little bit off.\r \r but overall if u ever hear someone say to pricy , i would say they don't the appreciate the dedication and art in food.\r Defenitly going back, but only with different server this time. more

not the best in town 6/18/2006

sometimes (most of the times) they have really random stuff on the menu... random meaning if you're a picky eater - forget it! BUT i would recommend eating in the bar area. there's a smaller menu, but they have a burger on the menu that's really good. drinks are good. and there's usually live music in the bar area. just don't eat in the restaurant part. Pros: beautiful place though! Cons: werid things on menu, not for kids more

Over Rated 1/11/2006

I will never understand why this restaurant is on the top 100 list. Food is marginally imaginative, but hardley what any one wants to eat. I went with a large party, and half of us could not find anything that was appealling. Service was poor. Our server seemed more interested in talking to the table next to us. It was not his table. I guess if you are a regular, it is a whole different experience. Pros: Beautiful Restaurant Cons: Menu, Service, Loud more

Not worth the price 12/11/2005

The building and dinning room are quite nice, but the service and overall feel just isn't up to the level of other places in the same price range. The service is very slow and most of the employees are not friendly. At the price level they're at, you expect friendly, personal service. The food was also average at best. While my steak was good, the creamed kale side was closer to creamed kevlar it was so tough. My wife was happy with her food, but the portions were on the small side for both our meals. Overall, my wife and I were disappointed, but not totally unhappy. Next time I would choose someplace else for a nice dinner however. Pros: Decor Cons: service, price more

great food 8/15/2005

the food was great! really fantastic. the service was decent- not perfect, but not bad. ambience was nice, especailly once the live jazz started. more

What a Great Find! 5/25/2005

We spent the day in Half Moon Bay and stumbled upon Cetrella - what a fantastic find! The food was amazing and service was great - not too pushy. Very nice atmosphere. We would highly recommend this restaurant!! Pros: Superb Food, Attentive Service, Romantic Atmosphere more

Don't Go! Worst Service Ever and Food is Just OK 5/8/2005

This restaurant ruined our evening. Theyve made the Top 100 and now feel they can take advantage. Wedged us into a table against the wall. The waiter knew nothing and took forever. We had to get our own forks before our food got cold. Our table was crowded with dirty dishes all evening. Wine didnt come until we were nearly done. He dropped a wine glass that broke all over us. And billed the next tables tab to our card. Did he beg forgiveness? Comp us dessert? Nope-- we were a large party and his tip was guaranteed. We talked to the manager who took our nameoffered nothing to compensate us. The food is OK, nothing special. Many dishes not as described and a lot of fried stuff (which tastes good, but is hardly genius). Even the chocolate cake is just OK (overcooked). Do yourself a favor and skip Cetrella. Pros: Food is OK Cons: Horrid Service, Crowded, Expensive more

Very personal service. 2/19/2005

Two-way communication is the key here. Our waitress was very attentive and her recommendations were excellent. The Zarzuela stew she suggested was finger-licking good and will feed two ppl if you get a couple of appetizers w/ that. Pros: Service, Food, Decor more

A treasure found. 1/22/2005

Cetrella hits all the notes on key. The chef's counter is the best seat in the house, especially mid-week. You just might be surprised with a special treat by the attending chef. Stay for dessert and enjoy the personal chocolate cake. The wines pair with their entrees with great harmony. Encore! Encore! I'll always come back for more. Pros: good parking, great environment, romantic setting more
