The prices are outrageous. $700 quote for teeth cleaning! $700 for a dog throwing up and having diarrhea. I would wait for 45 minutes to 1 hour for my dog to be seen by the doc, after a quick exam, I would wait another 45 min for the results! A vet clinic is stressful enough for a pet, but for them to be waiting for 2 hours, already feeling upset and ill is unreasonable and cruel. I would not recommend this place to anyone. They are crooks, greedy and unprofessional. They not only stole my money but also my time. DO NOT go here! more

Dr McDonald and Staff are caring and awesom 9/22/2011

My wife has been out of town on business for 2 weeks. I had a business trip that I could not cancel for 5 days. Our dog took a turn for the worse (which is saying something) and stopped eating, drinking, bad diarrhea, etc. more

Central Valley Vet is amazing! 7/22/2011

I was surprised to read all the negative reviews on here. I think too often, people only write a review if they had a bad experience. They were so fantastic that I just have to write a review for them :) My little two year old pug had a horrible cough, to the point where it was neverending and I was sure she was going to stop breathing. I called at 7:20am and they let me come right in, although they don't open until 8:00. The receptionist was very patient with me (I had the wrong address and had to call 4 times on my way over) and once I got there, she showed genuine concern for Lola and took me into a room right away. Lola was kind enough to have an ""accident"" in the exam room but the receptionist cleaned it up and assured me it happens all the time. I had gone to a vet in Sugarhouse previously and when Lola had an accident, the vet was obviously totally grossed out. Like a dog had never pooped in the exam room before. When the vet came in and examined her, she took the time to listen to me explain her history, as well as give my uneducated opinion that it did not sound like kennel cough or reverse sneezing, which Lola does all the time. The vet I went to before didn't want to hear about what I ""thought it was"" because obviously a lot of people nowadays think they're experts because of the Internet. My dog had been hacking up a lung all morning and all the way to CVVH, but when we got there, of course she completely stopped coughing. The vet was patient and took the time to go out into the parking lot with me and have Lola run around to try and hear the cough. She eventually did cough and while the cough could be a number of things, she said the most likely culprit was allergies. She prescribed two medications, as well as telling me to get some children's Benadryl for Lola. I had no idea you could give allergy meds to a dog! The vet was also nice enough to call the next day and check to see how Lola was doing! It's been two days now and her cough is almost completely gone. I would recommend CVVH to anyone with a pet. They are so caring, patient and genuinely love your pet! A++++++ more

UNPROS and CARELESS! 2/18/2011

I would put rating -10 if there is one.They almost killed one of my dogs who they admited with high fewer and diarhia,then held overnight by one young vet-male individual,who was scared to give shot to save our dog and promised that to us,but she almost lost a fluid totally and we took her next mornig home and we saved her with Golden Seal.otherwise she would die.Another dog of our that day atacked by pitbull was driven to them and she was bleeding almost to to death,they,Asshole rejected her saying they have another dog for estetic surgery in room and told us after waiting for 10 mins where to go.I wanted to sue them,but we had no time and nerves for them.Dont go there if you love you pets!!!They should all loose licenses! more

They want all your money. 10/26/2010

On Sunday my dog started to have a puppy and couldn't deliver more than it's head. The shoulders were stuck. We tried to deliver it ourselves, but couldn't do it. My regular vet was not available so we searched online for emergency vets and the first one that popped up was this one -- big mistake. We went there and they would not do anything unless we gave them $1700 which we did not have. I told them to give me my dog back and they made me sign a release. They also told my daughter our dog would die a horrible death if we took her, but we took her to Cottonwood Emergency Vet Hospital and they delivered the puppy for $130. Isn't that crazy? I wonder how many people they have bilked who were able to come up with the money. Don't take your emergencies there. Go to Cottonwood Animal Hospital -- they are compassionate and very professional and will not try to squeeze every penney they can out of you. more

this hospital has my guinea pid murdered 4/25/2010

Doctor Laura Mclain prescribed 1mg of Metoclopramide per 8 hours to my sick 1kg guinea pig. Immediately after taking the medicine, my guinea pig started to struggle and passed away after half an hour (torturing hour). I found that the suggested dose for animal is 0.1 to 0.2 mg per pound, which means the dose Laura Mclain gave me is 2.3 times greater than the upper limit. Just avoid the murders! horrible place for vets and grooming 7/14/2009

My mom took her dog there after hours. Not sure what was wrong with him they wanted 500.00 up front before the vet would even look at him. We dont make a lot of money, but we love our animals so we paid it. It took them 45 mins before we even saw the vet. They wanted to run all these unessasary tests on him which took forever. Sadly our little pug did not make it. But they sure took all of the 500.00 and then some. This is the most filthy dreary vet office I have ever been too. Same with the groomer I have heard horror stories from the druggie who does grooming. I think she hits the dogs my friends dog came home with bruises on its head and a cut armpit. Very unprofessional place would never recomend to my worst enemy.. Cons: everything more

Caring and Knowledgeable 3/20/2009

I really felt like my cats were in good care. From the reception desk to checkout I was made to feel like family and that my beloved pets were in excellent care. Pros: Friendly staff. The Vets are good at what they do. Cons: Dr. Packer is a moron. But he's not there now. more

THANK GOODNESS FOR CENTRAL VALLEY! 3/7/2009

I took my dog to Central Valley after calling my regular vet and being told their doctor had gone home early . My dog was by a car and we were in a panic . I called Central valley to make sure they would be open since it was nearing the end of normal business hours , they asked me for and ETA and said they would be waiting for us . I was not disappointed , they immediately took him to back room to begin treatment . The staff was friendly , noticing that I was covered in ""red "" they directed me to the bathroom so that I could get cleaned up . They did want a deposit to stabilize him , I did not find that to be unreasonable .And after they were done stabilizing him there was an additional cost for medications etc ... As a matter of fact the whole bill was far less than I had anticipated , I had heard horror stories from friends and family of ER vet bills .We had just gotten our tax return and I am greatful that we had it to spend . If I had it to do over again I would not change a thing . I will recomend Central Valley Vet to all of my friends and family . The vet even called me the following morning to make sure he was okay , I doubt that that is common procedure . However, it does speak volumes of her dedication and caring nature . Pros: The vet called me the following morning to make sure my dog was still okay ! caring staff . Cons: I just wish they were a bit closer , but glad that they are in business none the less . more

horrible outcomes 5/16/2008

I had a very, very bad experience with Central Valley one night. My dog was looking to be bloated and so I decided to take my dog to Central. When I got there and told them that my dog wasn't breathing very well and his stomach looked like a big, fat balloon, they preceded to tell me, that I wasn't going to be seen, because they had a more important emergency and didn't have the staff or oxygen available. They decided to send me over to Cottonwood Animal Hospital. Unfortunately, on the way over there, my dog passed away. When I got to Cottonwood Animal Hosptil, they got my dog out of the car and tried CPR. They were very busy and took the time to see my dog. They treated me really well, despite the outcome of this horrible situation. I always was told, that Bloat was a big emergency and that it should be treated fast. It is too bad my dog had to suffer at the hands of an incompitant hosptal (Central Valley). Pros: what?! none! Cons: they let my dog die more

Central Valley from an employee perspective. 4/12/2008

I work at this hospital as a Boarding Kennel Technician. It looks like people are not realizing this is an emergency hospital so it's the same as emergency for people. Emergency is costly. As for saying that no one is in the back, that;s not true. It's just like any emergency hospital, some nights are chaotic, some nights are quiet. There's at least one Vet and usually two overnight. The hospital is in a business area because of zoning restrictions. Closing the doors after hours is noted on the front door. The wait is the usual for emergency. as anyone can tell you from experience. I won't make excuses for poor service as it exists, everywhere. Emergencies are emotionally charged circumstances and people are going more on their emotions to perceive the circumstances. Be aware that emergency is costly and research before anything happens when you need emergency animal care. Have it known where to take your pet. It's very upsetting to have a bad situation without even knowing where to go. Generally, at this hospital, they don't allow people to go to the treatment area because of the clients emotional state and that could result in even more problems for staff and the owner. I've had my own bad experiences with Veterinary Hospitals plus I've worked at an animal shelter. I know what it's like as a client and as an employee. Also, most people who work at Central have pets and we do understand. As for emergency Vets, they can have abrasive personalities because of the work they do. It's not easy seeing suffering animals, night after night. Pros: Good care, good staff. Cons: Expensive as it's emergency. Long wait can be expected at times. more

Worst Animal Emergency and it doesn't seem to matter about animals health, they care more about money! 3/27/2008

When I got home from work I had noticed my new puppy was bleeding from the neck and I took him straight to the 24 hour vet emergency that seems to be the only one there is. When I got him in after waiting outside ringing the door bell.They found the previous owner put a rubberband around his neck The vet came in and pulled on it also and when he left, he made the rubberband worse and left it around his neck and now tight on his ear.I only saw the vet that 1 time.The bill was very expensive and they had to have the money UPFRONT right then or they said there was nothing they could do to help my poor puppy in so much pain the rubberband had cut and embedded into his neck and throat and his ear.They would not help him without the full amount of money right then.I was not going to let my puppy die and they didn't seem to care they said the other option is to just take him back home and he would die.I asked why is it that if this was my son or myself the hospital would mail me a bill and fix the problem ASAP because its an animal his life is less and because I don't have all of this money right now.They told me well we have to get paid for our services.They didn't care at all!I spent all of my check so he wouldn't die.They wouldn't take half for the next 2 weeks my son and I suffered financially.They do NOT value an animals like to the fullest.I would not recommend going to this Vet clinic unless its VERY URGENT!They're very expensive and VERY unfriendly and you wait forever and you can't stay with your pet while the surgery.I was very concerned about whether the vet really knew what he was talking about!Luckily my puppy is doing much better!But I am still to this day very upset with the situation and how poorly they handled it! I think it is very sad they are supposed to be vets and care so much about animals and saving them and helping them but yet MONEY is more important to them and they HAVE to have it right then and there or they will NOT HELP AT ALL! Pros: Open 24 Hours Cons: To Expensive, they have to have the money upfront, very unfriendly, the wait is very LONG more

Understanding a Hospital 1/28/2008

There aren?t many emergency animal hospitals so I really can?t complain about the sketchy location. Also it isn?t safe for the staff to keep the doors unlocked 24/7, clinics have been known to be robbed. In emergency situations I can appreciate the magnitude of individual cases so waiting is okay. Human and animal emergencies aren?t the place where you see healthy individuals that are there for regular check ups. I would rather the doctor focus on their patient rather then their loved ones. Emergency rooms aren't open to the public because of the kind of cases that are seen. Also it should be expected that the prices of most emergency hospitals are enormous, you are paying for immediate attention rather then waiting weeks to be seen, paying more is justified. I myself have health insurance so I can?t expect my animal to be treated with a $20 co-pay. If I were to be treated without insurance I am sure I would be in the same boat as many animals, dead. Expecting low cost medical treatment for life threatening illnesses or not is unreasonable. Tests are necessary because if your pet can tell you that it ate a plastic toy then by all means let your doctor know. Peddling seems harsh for someone who is just letting you know there are factors in what is making your animal sick. It takes all your organs to make your body run smoothly. As far as the staff I can?t imagine the type of environment they have to work with every night. Seeing the worst of the worst I can?t see anyone being happy knowing a client has come in needing emergency medical attention. I am GRATEFUL they were there in my emergency and saddened by unrealistic views. Politeness, room cleanliness, location, and price seem to fly out the window when faced with the idea that you are going to lose something close to you. Even though I missed out on Christmas, a few fancy dinners, my cable TV, and now am indentured to family and friends. Saving my pet was more rewarding then any of the previous things listed. more

Avoid 11/25/2007

My dog needed help one night, he swallowed something he shouldn't. My personal vet at the time, did not do emergent calls (I have since found a vet that does). I searched the phone book and called these guys due to their location (closest ER vet near me). I called and rushed down. I was NOT impressed. Very dodgey area off State St. (they lock the doors and make you wait, outside, when you ring their night bell outside) . Clinical, dreary waiting area, not friendly staff, incredibly long wait (30-45 mins) once someone finally came to the front door to let me in, are they calling the vet to wake them up to come in? They also did not let me go into the exam room with my dog, which I always do. No one else was waiting in the front area (so no one was being helped in the back). Strange place. IS THERE A VET back there? I didn't meet one. The Tech took him back to the closed door room, the tech brought him back to me. They gave my dog the eye drop medicine in his eye to make him regurg the item he swallowed (this has happened before) (very simple procedure lasting 3 mins) and charged me 4x what I paid to another vet, PLUS a night fee. If at all possible, wait til the morning and go to your own vet. I would ONLY go here in an terrible emergency. AVOID. Pros: Available all night, convenient to where I live Cons: cold staff, long wait, expensive, would not let me come in room with pet more

Courteous, friendly 24 hour emergency veterinary care; competitive pricing 10/25/2007

My vet recommended Central Valley for a surgical procedure that my pet required; my dog had to spend the night after his surgery. I found the staff not overly friendly on first impression, however, they warmed up to me the more i checked in on my pet. They were courteous on the phone and in person, and allowed me to visit my pet after surgery even though the clinic was closed. more

bad service 10/21/2007

I have recently adopted a kitten from a local animal shelter, they gave me a free visit to this vets office. However when I arrived I was five min late because I had a hard time finding it. They told me it would not be a problem, but it took them over 30 min just to check me in. Then one of the techs came in and said they were ready to check me out.I informed them that I had not even seen a vet yet., they said oh well it will be a just a few min it took another 30 min just to see the vet who had gone to meeting. They said it was because I was late but it was because they took 30 min to check me in! then they recommend all these test that did not need to be done. They are extremely high priced and always recommend more then you need. However they did give me a free bag of kitten food!! Pros: open 24 hrs Cons: if you excpet to be out in 30 to 45 min. then this clinic is not for you more

Avoid whenever possible... 8/3/2007

From my own personal experience and that of close friends of mine, I would not recommend this clinic. This clinic is open 24 hours a day and on weekends an holidays, unlike other clinics in SLC. So if you have an emergency, you are forced to go there, and they take advantage of that! They overcharge and recommend excessive unnecessary treatment? Pros: It's open 24 hours a day 7 days a week Cons: Overcharging and offereing excessive unnecessary treatment more

A harrowing experience 1/12/2007

I write this with a heavy heart. Faced with an overnight illness, I opted to bring my pet here. My town has only two veterinarians and the one that I favored was indisposed at the time. I now wish that I had been able to shop around more. After a long out of town drive, I met with the vets at this facility and told them of my pets symptoms. After a brief visual inspection, the emergency was proposed to be a grave one. If my beloved companion didn't get immediate attention, then he'd would suffer a rather painful death. It's too bad that I wasn't properly prepared for the financing to save my little friend. I'm a blue-collar worker with a modest job and didn't have a lot of money at my disposal at the time. I inquired about a payment plan, but the total bill had to be taken care of up front. It seems that I was left alone with my anguishing pet for rather long periods of time while the vets drew up each different estimate. When the head vet addressed my concerns, he spoke rapidly as he peddled one estimate after another. His demeanor appeared to be that of a salesman to me. I was referred to a credit plan for which I quickly applied. But the financial institution could not be reached that night. The first few hours of much-needed treatment was going be more than mere hundreds. There were other less expensive options, but not that I could immediately afford. I finally looked at the big picture; e.g. my wage, trying to preserve my credit in order to try to purchase a house in the near future, how badly my pet was suffering, and the possibility that my angel could expire from the procedure itself. I choose euthanasia, still saddened that life could be such a commodity. I feel that my pet wasn't treated compassionately as a critically sick animal. The lab work that could have accurately pin-pointed the problem wasn't done. I would've gladly paid for it alone, but I guess that wasn't part of the package. I was offered a smoking deal on cremation! more
