Five stories of books and media, self-checkout, knowledgeable librarians AND you can drink Starbucks from the first floor. Now if only they were open on Mondays, too!

The most impressive branch of the local library system! 12/31/2005

Although it was not my local branch, this downtown branch of the Multnomah County library system is what I think of when I think of the Portland library system. The building is an architectural gem and houses an amazing collection of books. There is so much room to move around, browse, take items to tables to peruse and the new computer system and organized layout makes it all very easy to find what you need. I enjoy taking my kids there as I remember going there as a child and being in awe of its size. more

Central Library 8/19/2005

This fully restored 1913 city library, containing 17 miles of bookshelves in just a few stories, this is easily one Portland's architectural highlights, with its massive windows, towering ceilings, and grand staircase. It's so spacious inside, with so much room to move about, that you wonder where so many books can be hidden away. Hours are not as long as many would like, so check before you go. more
