Best kept secret in Minneapolis 2/12/2012

I understand this understated gem has been in our city over 8 years. Who knew? You wouldn't know from the outside but once inside my experience was superb. The best escargot I've had anywhere. The braised short ribs left me speechless. And the Tres Lechi is the best in the city. I've been there several times now; weekends are jam packed. My favorite is Monday (yes they're open), or Thursday. The owner and staff treat you as family, the food is magnificent and extremely consistent. A 'must try' in South Minnie. more

Poor Reservations and Service/Good Food 5/1/2011

We had a 7:30 reservation for four but had to wait 20 minutes as the host seated a party ahead of us with no reservation. It took 1 1/2 hours to receive our meal. Waitress only checked in once. Salmon was perfectly cooked, scallops were good, pork was good, cauliflower soup was very bland. Frog legs had great flavor, but make sure you like LOTS of butter. Very loud, but comfortable seating. Would've given higher rating if service wasn't so poor. more

Great service and Amazing Ambiance 2/2/2011

I found out about Cafe Vin via the Alliance Francaise monthly emails and went directly to the nicely laid out website. One of my close friends and I went and to say the least were very impressed. This quaint, candlelite, intimate place is a perfect combination of rare, amazing service and delicious variety of food selections one could hope to find. I plan on returning very soon. This is perfect for an intimate dinner or sharing dessert with the love of your life. For an individual as picky as I am, do not take this review lightly. I promise, you will not be dissappointed. Thank you for providing the level or service, and the quality of food at a price one would expect at a ridiculously expensive place. more

Best food for the price 4/16/2010

We showed up and it didnt look like much from the outside. Remember, looks can be deceiving. It actually looks like a tiny hole in the wall place next to a dry cleaners, but the atmosphere, delicious food, and righteous prices make up for it. Never judge this book by the cover. I ate mussels for the first time yesterday and they were absolutely delicious. Their steak reminded me of a mannys, mortons of chicago, jax, or capitol grill, but was about half the price. The staff were all very polite and were on top of making sure our glasses were kept full. They will get my business anytime I am in the South Minneapolis/Edina area. Pros: High quality everything Cons: no scotch or hard liquor, only beer and wine more

Great service, great food 2/16/2007

If you go, ask to be seated in Elizabeth's section. She is top-notch, attentive, timely, courteous and knowlegeable. She is occasionally the hostess, but often the serves. Pros: Great service, attention to detail, and highly knowledgeable servers and chefs. Cons: Can be a bit pricey. more

Lovely night at Cave Vin 10/23/2004

My husband and me visited Cave Vin on a busy Saturday night. We were greeted by a kind hostess who sat us quickly and earlier than our reservation. We were delighted by our knowledgeable and friendly waitor named Josh who recommended a fantastic wine and gave his own experienced thoughts on the menu choices. We loved our steak tartare, frog legs, duck breast, trout, and desserts! Overall, I thought the food was terrific and the service was wonderful. I would recommend this candlelit restaurant to anyone wanting a nice night out in a fancy French manner. I've been to Paris and this was just as good and priced even better than the restaurants I remember there! Pros: service, food, candlelit setting more

Terrible!!! 5/4/2004

My wife and I had reservations at Cafe Vin for 6:45. When we arrived, we were told the wait would be 10 minutes (even though a number of open tables remained and we had reservations.) The host was very rude and unprofessional. In the middle of our waiting (two other couple were waiting as well) he went out for a smoke break. He returned and proceeded to seat the next couple that walked through the door. When we asked why they were given a table before us we were told they had requested a specific table. Fine, except the host had no idea who we were or if we had checked in yet. We decided to leave and which point he said he now in fact had a table for us. Sure. For better atmoshpere, better staff, and a better experience try Pierre's Bistro on 50th and Penn. Pros: Nothing Cons: , Reservation policy, Atmosphere more

Have made 3 trips so far and plan on many more. Each trip has been with guests ranging in number from 2 - 10. Each trip my guest think I am a genius finding this hidden secret. Fantastique! 4/28/2003

I was pleasantly surprised by Cave Vin. It's a small space, but that only adds to its charm. It has a very intimate setting with beautiful recessed lighting and candlelight illuminating every table. The wait staff is very attentive and personable. The owner even stopped by to say hello. It is very obvious that he takes a lot of pride in his restaurant. The food was absolutely delicious. The mussells and cheese plate that I sampled were just right, as were the sea scallops and wine. I highly recommend this restaurant, especially for those on a date looking for an intimate setting.
