Editorial review from Citysearch 3/22/2013

I have been using the Cat Vet of South Street for over 25 years. They have always been so helpful, patient and supportive. They were incredibly compassionate and patient with us when we had to put our 14 year old cat to sleep last year. I have nothing but good things to say about Dr. McKinstry and her staff! more

The ONLY place to take your cat 12/1/2009

After a horrific experience at Fairmount Animal Hospital, I found Dr. McKinstry. She is amazing! The place itself is a bit odd--a home turned into a vet shop, and not even remotely medical looking at all. The staff is all really friendly and actually love cats. Unlike most vets, they actually know how to handle cats (to prevent things like getting clawed). First of all, she will not try to sell you junk you don't need. She wants to know what your cat's problem is and how she can help. My cat had a gum infection that the previous vet told me would cost $5000. She suggested that we just use antibiotics for $10. We took the liquid one which he didn't like so I called up to get pills. Since I could only get it after hours, they left it in the mailbox so I could pick it up. The antibiotics ended up not working, so she did a teeth cleaning and recommended a gum gel. We started brushing his teeth and using the gel, and now he's fine. We didn't have to risk his life with an expensive surgery like the other vets suggested. She is very affordable and will always recommend the most affordable and reasonable treatment. It's pretty crowded, has weird hours, and is sometimes hard to get a hold of a human on the phone, but they are very good to their customers and are the only place I will trust with my two cats. Pros: friendly, caring staff, reasonable prices more

Amazing & Caring 4/22/2009

Called in and they made an appointment for me right away. After they saw that my cat was ill, she went over the procedure and explained everything in full detail. They went to work right away and returned a happy (drugged) cat to me. She explained everything again on his care for the next weeks and gave me her number to call in case of any other emergencies. She even took the cat home with her to watch over night. Amazing. more

Very friendly, affordable cat vet! 3/9/2009

I had to make an appointment for my sick kitty last minute and I was in the office 45 minutes later! I had less than a 10 minute wait when I got there! Dr. McKinstry was so kind, handled my cat very well (he didn't even freak out at all like he has with other doctor's, he was calm the whole time!), she gave me advice on the types of food he should be taking and even helped teach me how to clip his nails correctly. She answered all of my questions and I did not feel rushed at all. Everyone in the office was very kind and helpful. To top all of this off, it was completely affordable! I recommend this vet to anyone in the city who needs someone for their kitty! Pros: affordable, easy to get an appointment, kind friendly and non rushed environment! Cons: None. more

BEST CAT VET EVER 6/24/2008

Dr. McKinstry is a fantastic, gracious, expert cat vet that I have been using for over 14 years now. Dr. McKinstry is a true animal lover, and a superb vet. She has diagnosed issues w/ all of my pets so early, that she has saved their lives. Dr. McKinstry went to the University of Pennsylvania vet school - which is top notch, and she stays up to date w/ the cutting edge research in her field. Dr. McKinstry takes the time to explain all options and all treatment plans, and I have never been rushed at any of the appointments. In fact, she even gave me her home phone number when she knew I was nervous, which is totally uncommon. The bottom line is that Dr. McKinstry is a top of the line vet! She does not run one of those vet mills were you get a new doctor in training at every appointment, and none of them never stick around. You see Dr. McKinstry. Her practice is staffed by dedicated folks who you also get to know year after year. I only wish that I could get as good care as my cats at my primary doctor's office!! You cannot go wrong w/ this Doctor, and your pets will LOVE you for it! caf\r Pros: Expert care for your cats; smartest vet in the city and burbs. You can't beat McKinstry! Cons: they do not sell a bunch of cat toys (really no cons exist) more

rushed and insensitive 6/3/2008

I told Dr. McKinstry I had a lot of questions as a new cat owner, and she never took the time to ask me what my questions were. My cat lashed out and she decided to tranquilize him - I'm not too impressed with a vet who can't cut my cat's toenails without tranquilizing him! While he was asleep, she suggested doing a few tests, just in case I needed the information for the future. She did not explain to me how much more this would cost me, and there was no immediate need for the tests. Then she recommended an animal behaviorist but could only give me a last name, and left her receptionist to look up the phone number on AOL! Not surprisingly, the receptionist was unable to find it by typing only the last name into a search box. I left the office fairly upset, because Dr. McKinstry kept telling me ""This is a bad cat,"" and I wish that either she or the assistant had noticed I was upset and said something encouraging. Pros: easy to get an appointment Cons: all staff expressed that they didn't like my cat more

Great 5/9/2008

I called half an hour before they were closing and they took my cat right away. Very friendly and helpful more

great vet, if you can get an appointment 1/16/2007

Dr. McKinstry provided excellent care for my cats. I appreciate how she answered my dozens of questions, explained the treatment options, and showed me how to administer medication to a very uncooperative kitten. She and the staff are all warm, kind people who genuinely care about cats. Unfortunately I think she's overwhelmed with patients. I would call again and again during office hours-- the phone line was almost always busy. When one of my cats had an emergency problem over the weekend, I decided it was time to go with a bigger clinic. Pros: wonderful vet and staff Cons: limited hours, impossible to get through on the phone more
