After I left your Cat Clinic of Cary Monday (around 11/20/15) I went to Town & Country vets down the road. The vet there said that since you had expressed a good amount of urine from him, and that he had then peed on his own a pretty good amount, and since when she palpated she found that his bladder was empty, she said it would make no sense to put him thru the danger and expense of catheterization/anesthesia/IV/CBC/Urinalysis/Xrays, as you recommended. If he was totally blocked - different story.\r
\r
She prescribed an anti-inflammatory, also a drug to relax his urethra, used a syringe to put some saline subcu, and we bought some hard/soft prescription urinary diet food. We watched him closely. Since then he has progressively and quickly improved - he is almost all the way back to normal now.\r
\r
I believe you were wrong to recommend the drastic steps you did. Also, I feel you were somewhat impersonal and used scare tactics on vulnerable pet owners (twice you went thru a mechanical litany of 'what-ifs' if we didn't follow your suggestions, both ended with 'die' or 'death').\r
\r
When (flustered worried and guilty) we told you we'd follow your recommended $1000 plan and you left the exam rm, he went under a chair and peed several mL. When we told you this, you went in the room and looked and came out and said dismissively ""it's just spotting"". It wasn't. Why didn't you palpate his back flanks again to see if his bladder was empty? \r
\r
I felt you showed poor 'bedside manner', you didn't come across as sympathetic and positive. When I tried to discuss alternative approaches like giving him an anti-inflammatory etc you 'blew me off'. That's when I had the ""oh boy"" moment and got my cat out of there.\r
\r
I told this story to a friend and when she learned where you work she said she stopped taking her cat to the CC of C when she felt big ticket procedures were being pushed on her. She claims one vet left because he or she wouldn't play that game, and may have felt pressured by the office to up his or her billings.\r
\r
I hope you were just having an off day, and I hope this experience will make you more careful about jumping to big ticket/risk-filled options quickly. You have a nice web site showing a lot of excellent services and info, and I had enjoyed my visits to your clinic until now, with all the cats in the lobby. I sincerely hope this was an aberration. \r
