Eating dinner here is an experience to be had. Really inventive and unique presentation. Probably the best steak I've ever had. Plus how can you not like a place that has a pre...

Gone downhill 1/12/2007

I'm afraid to say that Castagna isn't nearly as good as it used to be. I'm not sure what has changed but I doubt we'll be back after the amount of money we spent for a mediocre meal. The cafe next door is a much better bet. The atmosphere is beautiful though and service is impeccable. Pros: Service, pretty atmosphere Cons: expensive for the quality more

Very romantic...Great service 10/10/2006

This is a wonderful restaurant with a very stylish look and ambiance (great lighting for dinner). The waiter was friendly and very attentive. Appetizers were the duck raviolis (YUM). For entrees, we had the salmon (perfectly cooked) and lamb chops (again, perfect). The creme brulee and chocolate pots-de-creme was worth the drive alone. Nice wine selection too. Parking can be tough, but where in Portland is it easy ;o) Will definitely go back. Pros: romantic, great lighting, fabulous staff Cons: parking is a pain more

Wonderful dinner! 7/11/2006

My wife and I had a wonderful dinner at Castagna. The food was excellent and perfectly prepared. We thoroughly enjoyed our appetizers (sea scallops and rabbit pate), main dishes (Muscovy duck and raq (had to misspell because this site won't let me use the correctly spelled word) of lamb), and desserts (seared mascarpone cheese cake with local raspberries and rhubarb Napoleon), as well as some nice French wine. The decor was very nice and soothing, the seating was comfortable, and the staff was attentive. We are looking forward to our next delightful dinner at Castagna. Pros: Food, Service, Ambience more

Exceptional 11/13/2005

This is the kind of fine dining we have forgotten to expect. Four of us enjoyed four different entrees, appetizers and desserts. All were exceptional. Fish was cooked perfectly, everything was seasoned with interest and art. Even the side dishes were delicious and unusual. Service was wonderful. The decor is sparse but the food is definitely the crowning jewel. Who needs fancy art? What a treat! Pros: food, service, wine more

This is the Best Restaurant in the City 9/28/2005

I love Castagna. I've had dishes here that make me want to stand and shout. They make delicious, delicious, delicious food. Now if only we had a town with food critics that knew the difference between bland and delicious, a light might be shining on a path that could lead you to this exceptional place. Take it from me, there are gems you aren't hearing about. This is one of them. Treat yourself to the dining room. The cafe is great, but the chef really shows his stuff on the nice side. Pros: food, drinks, service Cons: Eastside more

Nicely done except for the arrogant waiter 8/19/2005

This place has predictable dishes, nothing new or outstanding but made well punctuated an unwelcome impression of being unwelcome. It was such a bother for the waiter to wait on us that it ruined the entire experience. What is the deal with Portland waitstaff? Pros: well made dishes Cons: typical, bored waiter, not friendly at all more

Bring the In-Laws 6/1/2005

My in-laws were in town a few weeks ago and my partner and I decided for their last night in town we would get a babysitter and take them out for a memorable meal together. We had heard great things of Castagna's Restaraunt (we have been to and enjoyed the cafe several times) and decided to test it out with the parents...... what a good choice we made! The meal was incredible as was the service. We all ordered different appetizers and entrees thinking we could all share little tastes, and little tastes they were indeed because everyone loved their own meal so much, no one wanted to share! We even ordered desserts (unusual for us) because we had to see what would come out next, and we weren't disappionted. I would highly recommend Castagna to anyone looking for an excellent fine dining experience. Pros: Good Service, Decent parking, nice atmosphere Cons: Bit expensive more

cancelled reservations 1/12/2005

food is excellent, location and ambience is average. I do not go there after they cancelled a reservation the day of a birthday event I had planned, saying that their restaurant was closed. the large french fry plate is a little bizaar and not really all that tasteful. Pros: food, wine list more

amazing 1/28/2004

the majority of portland diners probably won't understand how truly amazing Castagna really is. The will feel much more comfortable eating at Portland city grill or Manzana, where the service is fake and intrusive. The service and the food at Castagna are genuine and understated. The people who understand the difference make this there home away from home. more

Worth crossing the bridge 2/15/2003

Very nice people and good food, but the dining room has the appeal of a barren hotel entrance hall... alas. Pros: imaginative cuisine, well spaced tables Cons: charmless dining room more

unstated elegance 8/25/2002

There is a sophistication to dining at Castagna that is definitely an acquired taste. I appreciate the thoughtfulness of the food and serenity evoked by the surroundings. Castagna is actually one of the places that I feel most comfortable. Service has always been respectiful and friendly. I think if you enter Castagna with the intent to satisify you palate, you will leave happy. However, as a celebratory place, you may feel disappointed. more

Museum Dining 8/19/2002

If you moved Castagna from the East side to L.O., you might have a winner. But between Ladd's Addition and Hawthorne the stark surroundings and aloof staff are entirely out of place, and not in a refreshing way. The food has the requisite exotic menu, with prices to match, and everything was prepared adequately (I had a decent quail entree). However, the staff matches the austere surrounds, and you can't escape the feeling that somehow you're intruding in the restaurant. It absolutely detracted from the meal. But, if elitism is what you crave..... more

Must've been an off night ! 8/2/2002

Sure it's hoity toity and I like great food as much as the next filthy rich portlander with time to burn. The Food was AWESOME, don't get me wrong. But a restaurant with a rep like this one needs to be consistent I think. Cold and Clinical, YES. Romantic? Heck NO !! I would recommend Castagna to anyone who ISN'T hungry and would just as soon watch two hundred dollars float elegantly down the toilet. ""But c'mon, it's an art gallery for food!!"". yeah whatever. What a rip off. more

Fabulous 5/20/2002

The food at Castagna is as simple and elegant as teh room. Service is top-notch. It's a perfect haven for Southeast foodies. more
