Displaced Homemaker Deceived 3/19/2013

There has been a lot of negative reviews for this school, and I will be adding mine. But I am most interested in finding out how to NOT pay this loan now. I was deceived by the recruiter. I was informed that I NEEDED this education and experience in order to get my foot in the door. When all was said and done, 3.89 GPA and 120 hrs externship (that means I worked for free). I could not land even a min wage job as a Veterinary Assistant. Most prospective employers informed me that they were surprised that we didn't even get an X-ray Certification out of this, let alone any official accreditation. I would love to say that I had GREAT teachers, but the fact that they KNOW what a scam this is, and they let their students go on being deceived?? It's not ethically right. So! If anyone can tell me how to get out of this loan, I would sure appreciate it. Being a single mom with 4 kids to care for on a limited income is not easy, and I work hard to just keep a roof over our heads. I don't see an more

Carrington as a whole may be okay but if you are considering attending as a student please RETHINK ! There are so many other trade schools that would be such a better choice. I was disgusted by the end of the veterinary assisting program! Tawnya cantu is one of the most unprofessional instructors I've ever experienced. She curses in class. Tells students that they are stupid in front of the entire class. It's a mess, unorganized and unprofessional. I am sorry to say I paid over 14,000 dollars to have a teacher say every other day that she's not paid enough to deal with students. And if you do have a concern about the instructor going to a supervisor does nothing but let her know you went to her supervisor and she treats you worse. Please please please rethink your educational future. more

I just want to express that Carrington College Portland, OR campus have many hard working staff who really care about the success of their students. When you read reviews here from disgruntled folks bear in mind there are probably other issues for folks to express such words. See for yourself,. and better your future. more

I used to work there ten years ago in 4/16/2012

I used to work there ten years ago in the office and that place was a mess and extremely unorganized. After reading the reviews I just learned they had changed their name from Apollo to carrington I figured since they still use that cheesy tune in their advertisements .Now that I am thinking of going into the medical field I began looking for schools in the area and good old Apollo college popped up in disguise....I am glad I worked there to know that the old president of the school (my boss) at the time was a total douche and sleeping with the admin or (personal assistant) and after I got sick and tired of doing her job while they were taking two hour lunch breaks or longer instead of managing a school I just quit caring if I worked there or not especially when I did not feel confident with their conduct of business and student relations. The school had issues with being accredited and the internships never happened and job placement department was none existent and the gal working there did not care about the students which I was cross training to help assist her with students and she complained about having to blow people off because she did not have time to deal with them. I felt so bad for the students with whom some I befriended and there were a few good people and teachers but this was ten years ago so who knows now. It was hard to see these students dedicate themselves to this class and the school really only saw them as paychecks and it is what you make it after you graduate anyone can go out and get a job if they got excellent grades and persistently searches for job placement - as for any hopes getting help finding work good luck with them... they are going to file you away give you a lame excuse and move on to the next person.... The director (Diane) of this Carrington 3/30/2012

The director (Diane) of this Carrington Apollo College in Portland, Or told us that the school is all about the students! But what about the patients? Does this mean that if a student makes a mistake and hurts a patient accidentally, that the student is always right and the patient must endure the pain or mistake?!!! You would think that a good dental college would think highly of the patients and their needs also. And the patient not to be considered as just a type of lab rat for a good grade! I think the attitude of the director of this school needs to be more compassionate, patient and caring for the patients just as much as the students! Otherwise, why would anyone want to come there for dental services and treatment??? more

class action lawsuit against carrington college 7/22/2011

Horrible experience at carrington college. Not what it claims to be. Am actually talking to an attorney about a class action lawsuit. I want reimbursement for the $13,000.00 tuition and the time I spent or should i say wasted, attending here. if you are interested in joining a class action lawsuit please email me at carringtonlawsuit@hotmail.com I will pass your info on to the attorney, alot of people have been taken advantage of thru misrepresentation, its time we put our foot down, I feel that the time lost, I will never get back, but some reimbursement will help. i would never have passed my state board exams, if I had not gone on my own, and researched information on the internet about dental assisting. The teaching they provide as well as materials are not enough. They told me that they are accredited and they are not, at least not with the ADA like they led me to believe. Hands on experience? thats a joke, unless you count doing each procedure 1 time on a dummie experience, there more

Waste of Money!!! 2/12/2011

I attended the Dental assisting program at Apollo in Portland and finished in 2009 with a 3.0 gpa. I finished my externship in Jan. and didn't recieve my diploma until September! I called and emailed and finally I had to tell them I would sue them if I didn't get it so they finally sent it to me. Even though I live in Washington they said they could help find a job. LIE!!! No one would help me and it is now 2011 and I still don't have a job in the dental field. No employer takes this education seriously! it was worst 13,000 dollars I ever spent! I found out that the local community colleges let you work on real patients and at Apollo you work on only dummies! The externship they sent me up with was a joke, the dentist couldn't speak english very well and they never let work on real patients because I wasn't registered in the state of Washington as a dental assistant, and you can not register until you have graduated! I thought I was on the road to a new career but now I am working a lo more

Class Action Law Suit! 1/12/2011

Wow...so not only was I rushed to sign up for classes because the class started the next day...I was told that I would qualify for numerous grants. I have received the Pell Grant but I should also be receiving the FSEOG grant, and the grant for my grades. The last 2 are done through the school's financial aid department. I have called numerous times and they have told me that I have to call the state financial aid and that it is not done at the school. I get this run around every time. I am so upset. The university said that my out pocket expense should be very limited because of all the grants that I would qualify for. So far I am in debt 32K and still have 5 more classes to take. The online classes are BS to. an instructor writes 3 questions and you answer them and respond to other students responses, then you write an essay at the end of the week. Overall I am paying almost 2K a class to social in a structured manner with other people that I could do at the local coffee shop. I want more

awful experience at apollo/carrington college 11/16/2010

I graduated in August it's now November I still have not received my Diploma and the Registrar will not return my phone calls to tell me when I will receive it. Apollo/ Carrington's career services is a joke as well they have not helped with finding me a job they claim to send me e-mails but it's funny how I never receive anything from them...they say their e-mail must be broken lol... what a load of B.S.!!! Should I continue to give you more reasons of why you should not attend this school how about they let anyone and I mean anyone into their school!!! They let this guy into the class I was attending that was fine and all until I found out what kind of monster he really was he sexually harassed me and threatened to beat my fiancee up with a baseball bat because he was obsessed with me...he tried sexually assaulting me, telling my fiancee he was going to have sex with me, slapped my ass, etc you named it he tried it...then I find out not only he is sexually harassing me he is harassin more

Spend your money elsewhere!!! 11/11/2010

I went to Apollo/Carrington College for the veterinary asisstant program in Portland, OR. When I was their half of the microscopes didn't work properly, the IDEXX machine and other out-dated equipment they had there also didn't work properly most of the time. We were always running out of supplies-slides, etc.We would have to hide some of the supplies so we would have some to use during our lab time. Ridiculous, huh? That's what I felt! What was being done with the $12,000 we spent to go to school there?\r \r I went through 3 teachers when I went to school there. I had major problems with the second teacher I was assigned. I criticized her teaching while I was still going to school there-big mistake. When I first started school there, during lab she would just sit at her desk typing on her computer(most of the time on her facebook & myspace account)all the time, only to look up once in awhile to answer a students question when they came up to talk to her at her desk. The rest of the time it was student teaching student. A lot of the ""senior"" students who were there when I first started didn't make it through their externship because of not being taught properly how to restrain an animal during procedures. If the teacher's not teaching, what do you expect? This teacher made my life hell. From first talking about my coursework with another student,(she had a tendency to make ""friends"" with her students instead of just focusing on teaching) belittling me-boldly telling me to my face that I was stupid, making remarks about my weight, and statements made to other students in class regarding my mental health. Not only that, she told the entire class during class time that I was failing class, but since it was such a difficult class,(math, not my strong suit, and it's been 20 years since I've been in school)she would give me a D so I could graduate. I would have passed with a D anyways, but she didn't regard an assignment she gave me to do when I missed a field trip--she didn't grade me on an 8 page report I did on pros and cons of primate research, she just disregarded it because I felt she just wanted to humiliate me in front of the class.\r \r I was also harassed by a group of students in my class that liked her and when I complained about the harassment, I was written up for disrupting the class. Then when the last teacher was brought in, the same people who harassed me started telling stories about me sleeping with the new male teacher! Disgusting people! They had a ""mob mentality"" and just wanted to bring me down.\r \r After all of this, I continued on to my externship where I received an A, and graduated. My guidance counselor helped me a lot and having a loving, supportive family and friends helped me to make it through to the end. \r \r Would I reccomend anyone to attend this school? No, Run Away! I would never want anyone else to go through what I did. Your money would be better spent at your local community college, where the teachers are actual teachers with their teaching accredidation (ie., license to teach!)instead of just professionals in their field, who really don't act professional! Your money would also go farther--$12,000 for books and tuition for 7months of schooling is too much!\r \r Please do your homework about this school and think more than twice before you attend it! more

Same here in Arizona! Run away! 7/8/2010

Run away! we have Apollo in AZ too, i went here a few years back, and i should have listened to everyone (ghetto) old gross stuff. It was like everyone was preggers for there 50th time with 50 diff dads. I got ring worm from the massage tables along with everyone else. I think my first instructor was fired for sleeping with a student i dunno (weird) situation. I didn't learn anything, everyone was copying off each others papers and when we were learning how to drape i got exposed 1000 times I got an "opps im still learning" by the men in the class..it was horrible..I would tell people i went/was going to Apollo and they're like EWWW and i say ewww.. enough said don't go here i know they talk it up at your high schools but don't fall for it! more

Nasty students, but am enjoying the program. 5/9/2010

I am currently attending Apollo (soon to be Carrington) When I went to sign up for the veterinary assisting program the rep tried to get me to sign up immediately but I persisted in getting my questions answered, doing my research on the school and reading all the reviews... most of them are really negative. The classrooms are jam packed full of people and there is a lot of tension between students. I don't know where most of these people come from but for lack of a better term most of the girls are pretty "ghetto" and I have heard some students threatening to beat someone up in the parking lot. Really? If they aren't out right threatening someone they curse at everyone under their breath, just vulgar disgusting people. Keep it in the pool hall. As far as the work is concerned I really enjoy it and am satisfied with what I have learned so far. Although I feel our instructor could use to review EVERYTHING before she hands it out as she doesn't seem to know what's on there and a lot of more

Non student 4/28/2010

So I was considering Apollo college but decided to check out reviews first and this site put a lot of things into perspective for me and answered a lot of the questions I had. One thing that i found funny was its all bad reviews by normal sounding people but when you get to the good reviews it sounds like the school itself is trying to give itself good reviews. Really? What normal person would end their comment by Thank you Apollo College for giving me a great career? haha i cant help but find that hilarious! more

BAD SCHOOL, DON'T BOTHER! 4/17/2010

I will definitely not recommend Apollo College to anyone I know. Overcrowded classes, no clinical experience to speak of, which is what you need to help you in the real world of the course you take (Dental Assisting). Lots of attitude from director and ignoring issues or just saying you'll be fine, you'll be fine. What a load of BS. I agree about the admissions rep it was just like a used car saleswoman. I'm sorry I wasted my time and money. I failed my clinical part of one of my tests in dental x-ray and once you have graduated you are not allowed back on campus to retake. Now I'm stuck trying to find a dentist who will allow me to take in office but I don't even feel confident enough to retake because of no practical teaching. More lecturing time is spent than practical and lot's of disruption from immature students and no cohesiveness to class. I did well academically but feel that it was a waste of time and money and would not recommend. They don't give you any REAL help a more

Yes, you can teach an ole' dog new things 4/13/2010

At the age of 60 I found myself out of a job, wondering just what I was going to do now. Went to several area colleges to check out my opportunities. Medical Billing and Coding really appealed to me. My admissions representative Shirley was very informative and answered all my questions. I asked if I could sit in on all MBC classes, (others schools told me I could not), I did sit in for a couple hours on the morning class and the next day on the afternoon class. I then made my decsion I wanted to be in the AM MBC classroom, and I have not regreated my decsion.\r My instructed Judy has brought to our class an a vast amount of knowledge and is bound and determined to get all that knowledge into all of her students. Judy is very compassionate about the MBC program and always tries to help her students as much as possible when individual help is needed. Judy mentioned vounteering in the MBC field and gave me a # at the Portland VA. I called and I am volunteering there now 3 days per week right now and will continue until I graduate. I will graduate in July and have no doubt I will be fully prepared to begin my carrer in Medical Billing and Coding. Thanks, Judy for all your help it is appreciated. Pros: Compassionate instructor Cons: crowed classroom more

My experience at Apollo College 4/12/2010

Apollo College was one of the best programs I ever attended. After being out of school for 22 yrs. My Instuctor Tawnya Cantu was very helpfull. Anytime I needed more attention she was willing to give me her time and knowledge. I was a little challenged in Math and she made a big difference so that I would understand it. Probably one of the best teachers I have ever had in my life. I would not be here today as a honor roll graduate without her. Thanks Tawnya you are the best!!!! Pros: Very good hands on learning Cons: need more lab times more

Kayla F.\r \r I'm not sure how to reply. Not everyone loves us, but when they do, they really love us. We talk a lot about changing lives around here, and I guess that is what you are hearing from those students who said that they loved Apollo College and wanted to thank their teachers and mentors for helping them find a new career.\r \r I recommend that you come down to the Lloyd Center and visit our campus yourself so you can make up your own mind. \r \r Good luck in your own career search.\r \r David K.\r dkaye@useducationcorp.com\r \r \r \r \r \r \r Micky,\r \r I am sorry to hear about your recent experience and would like to take a moment to explain our accreditation and credit transfer policy.\r \r Apollo College has national accreditation through the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS). Credits DO NOT TRANSFER 3/14/2010

I attended from 2008-2009, and when I first enrolled, I was told that Apollo was accredited just like any other university or college and that my credits would transfer. WRONG. Apollo's national accreditation is vastly different from REGIONAL accreditation which is what most four year colleges and community colleges use. I sat down and discussed this with a rep from Scottsdale Community College in Arizona. She was very sympathetic but she basically told me that I was duped and that I would have to start over - no credits earned from Apollo would apply to ANY degree there. DO YOUR RESEARCH. I'm learning my lesson the hard way. Go to collegeboard.com to check to see if your future college has regional accreditation. more
