PERFECTION :) 2/11/2011

Carolina Coffee Shop is my favorite place to eat in Chapel Hill by FAR! As a UNC student, it's so nice to eat there with friends, go there for lunch and a study session, etc.! The service is always excellent, and the food/menu options are amazing as well. I always have trouble deciding what to order because everything is incredible! Also, if you enjoy sweet tea...GET IT HERE! It's always awesome. In short, EAT HERE! You'll never regret it!!!! more

GREAT PLACE FOR CHEESE FRIES & COLD BEER!! 10/21/2009

WE EAT THERE AND WE ARE AWESOME! All kidding aside, it has the BEST CHEESE FRIES to go with cold beer on all of Franklin St. (or anywhere else in the Chapel Hill/Durham area for that matter). It is under new management since July, 2009 and smack in the MIDDLE of Franklin St. - perfect location! Try them out. Pros: Clean, well lit, friendly service, good food/booz, large TVs Cons: none - because the location is PRIME on Franklin St. more

Carolina Coffee Shop a "must stop" 8/9/2009

Brunch today @ the Carolina Coffee Shop (under new ownership) was perfect in every way. We were seated promptly, the service was efficient and attentive, and, most importantly, the Eggs Benedict arrived quickly, and perfectly cooked. Very highly recommended Pros: Best coffee in Chapel Hill more

It's changed! 9/19/2008

The Coffee Shop was for years our place to take out-of-towners or for a comfortable dinner with friends before crossing the street to the Varsity Theater. The place had an interesting & changing menu with innovative items (trout was always interesting). It "feel" was old, local, comfortable, established, historic (since 1926). more

BEST BURGER - The Hot Bacon Provolone Cheeseburger!! 6/11/2008

BEST BURGER - The Hot Bacon Provolone Cheeseburger with onion!! Cozy atmosphere, a little pricey but nice! Pros: cozy and quaint - a real college town atmosphere Cons: no parking for call-in pick ups! But if you have a friend to drive around while you run in, it's worth it. more

Avoid the Coffee shop 3/2/2008

I was completely dissapointed with the entire experience at he COffee shop this morning. My server never popped over to greet or take drink orders. I had to tell the hostess and she retrieved the drinks. Finally after 30minutes from sitting down the server came over and took our order. My dish (breakfast food) took quite awhile and the eggs were wrong. When the dish arrived back the entire meal was cold and uneatable. My drinks were never refilled. I looked up a couple of times and noticed that there wasn't one server in the dinning room. I will never return and do not recomend this to anyone!! more

Bad Experience 4/1/2007

We went here on a Sunday after church. There was a bit of a wait, which we thought was a good thing. After we were seated it took nearly 10 minutes for a server to even appear. When we finally got her attention we had to ask for *everything* (silverware, napkins, creamer). They ran out of some of their key foods (part of which were included in our order) and offered to knock off a few bucks if we would keep the order and the substituted something else so we agreed. We waited 30+ minutes for our order (breakfast food) and when it came it was awful. cold and gross. we would have complained but our server never came back to our table. when we finally got our bill they had only discounted our order $1.55 (!) and when I told the server that the whole meal had been bad she apologized and spoke with the manager. who did nothing. Pros: convenient Cons: bad service, terrible food, dirty more

Avoid the "Hair-O-Lina" Coffee Shop 3/4/2007

I went to the Carolina Coffee Shop for lunch and was quite disappointed. I ordered a breakfast dish with meat, eggs and potatoes. After I had eaten a few bites I noticed a long black hair protruding from my eggs. The hair had obviously been cooked into the food. I let the waitress know and she kindly offered to bring me another dish. I ordered the fish special which was a battered and fried catfish. My dish came out in a matter of minutes, which made me think that they had actually given me someone else's order. Sadly, I found sticking out from the batter of the fried fish another long black hair. I was beyond losing my appetite. The manager/owner of the store was in that day, and knew about the situation but did not bother to come by and apologize. Instead the waitress came to our table and was nice and apologized but gave me a card that said "good for one entree, does not include drinks or gratuities" signed by the manager. Pros: Good location Cons: Doesn't have to impress non-college crowd more

Terrible Service 12/20/2005

I used to enjoy eating here, but lately my service has been horrendous. It took almost 15 minutes to get our drinks - and you can forget about getting refills. They made absolutely no accomidations to making my visit better, even after I complained. Definitely will not go back here, and would not recommend others. more

Skip it for lunch 3/12/2005

If you're in Chapel Hill for lunch, skip this place. The service is slow, it took them 15 minutes after we ordered for one of the servers to tell us that they were out of one of the items we ordered, and then it took another half hour for the food to arrive at our table. The waiter was an airhead at best, gave terrible service, and our check took forever and a day. Then the waiter took another lifetime to bring my credit card back. All this was for average food and it was cold as could be in there-I wore my coat the whole time! Pros: location, atmosphere Cons: service, average food more

A Coffee Shop Regular 4/6/2004

I have to disagree with the review above that described the coffee as equivalent to that at the Waffle House. The Carolina Coffee Shop's coffee comes from Broad Street Coffee in Durham, and is by far the best coffee to be had on Franklin Street. It is the distinct and wonderful flavor that makes it my favorite. Also, you can't beat the lunch specials at the coffee shop. You will always find the Coffee Shop crowded on Fridays as the fish and chips special (drink included) for $7.95 is extremely popular with the university. I recommend avoiding the noon-1pm hour if possible, as that is when wait times are the greatest (although never terribly long). In short, I give the Carolina Coffee Shop two thumbs up. Pros: daily lunch specials, excellent food, great coffee more

Quiet Spot for Friends 8/7/2002

The Carolina Coffee Shop is a tradition I don't mind upholding. I have never gotten service that is any less than sastisfactory, in fact all managers and waitstaff have been extremely nice even when I've only come in for a cup of French Onion soup (which is excellent by the way) and a sweet tea. It's also a nice place for quiet reading and reflection without the stuffiness commonly associated with Chapel Hill. The classical and jazz musical selections are a nice touch to the atmosphere that is perfectly suited for all means of get togethers. Pros: Location, Atmosphere, Price Cons: Parking more
