Wonderful relaxed atmosphere. The patio is and beautiful intimate I have been a customer here for over 5 years and have gone with a variety of friends and everyone has always felt welcome. That is the beauty of the Candlelight is it is a place for everyone. The food is okay but the cake is outstanding. The cheese plate is very generous. more

No orders after 11pm! 7/5/2011

It was 1105PM maybe. We had a half eaten plate of dip and our group had ran out of the little crackers served with it. When requesting another handful of crackers, we were informed that since the registered was closed to food orders at 11pm, that we could not get any more crackers. The man working there was rude and told us that we should have portioned the dip more generously per each cracker we were given rather than run out of crackers and have dip remaining. One group member spoke with the manager/owner about this man's poor behavior and service and we still were not afforded any crackers which could have cost the owner maybe $2.50 if he gave us the entire box of crackers. Instead, the owner lost a life-time of my business for this crude behavior, rules and service when instead, someone could have just grabbed us a handful of crackers. more

Nightcap to Valentine's Day 2/14/2009

My husband and I decided to go on Valentine's Day based on a recommendation from a friend. Though we are not wine drinkers, we aspire to open our own coffee shop one day. The atmosphere was nice, though we had to wait for a table and very confused by where to sit. There are main tables and surrounding tables with couches. We sat at one and realized that we were sitting at someones table with them. - The staff 'appeared friendly', but I also noticed eye rolls and deep gasps between shuffling around. - Being a first timer it took me a while to discover that all orders were placed at the bar. On my attempt at the bar, I was overlooked and another groups order was taken before mine. I assume they were regulars, or just fit more of the 'mold' of what the place was all about. - It seemed on this night for lovers that there was a large population of people with an alternative lifestyle. My husband and I felt like a minority. - The food was decent enough. The salad tasted good, just had little to no dressing. The spinach and artichoke dip had a different spin with a variety of crackers. We also had the mousse cake, which was quite good. - We would probably go back. - We enjoyed some quirky things like the local art and the system they used to allow the kitchen staff to know where your food went. The outside patio looked beautiful, though we opted for an indoor table. - Price was a little high for what we had, nearly $40 on just a two non alcoholic beverages, a salad, spinach and artichoke dip, one latte, and a piece of cake. Pros: Food, Ambience Cons: Parking, Coffee Menu, Friendliness of Staff more

SA's best coffeehouse! 12/12/2008

Awful restaurant 7/23/2008

I used to work here. Pros: The only good thing I can think of was that I made decent tips here and they go through lengths to provide the cliche ambience. Cons: Food is frozen food a lot of the times, and the ""award-winning coffee"" is something you could make at home with Folgers and some whip cream and/or ice cubes. more

A fabulous place for brunch and late evenings... 7/8/2008

I have visited Candlelight on several occasions and always left in good spirits. One, the atmosphere is incredibly friendly and relaxing. The place supports local art and great artists are showcased every so often. If you are one for hot tea, I would definitely recommend this place. They have a plethora of interesting blends and everything is served on a cute tin tray. The food, ESP the brunch food, is fabulous. Everything has always been incredibly tasty and not too greasy. The brunch is really worth trying out. There is a great selection of foods and drinks and everything tastes very homemade. If you plan on going to brunch, get there early, as the indoor dining space is quite small and fills up fast. The back patio is beautiful at night, as there are gorgeous sculptures set up and golden lights illuminate the grounds. There are games and books to choose from if you plan on lounging around and the place is decked out in very antique looking couches and chairs. You have to order and pay at the bar, which can sometimes get pretty crowded. They then give you a picture so they can identify your table in serving the food. The wait staff is incredibly friendly and consists mainly of guys. Overall a really great place to visit at night and it closes at midnight! Pros: beverages, esp. hot tea, food and atmosphere Cons: the crowds at brunch are overwhelming, does not accommodate large parties during busy hours more

Group of 18 had to practicly eat in the rain 5/18/2008

As a member of a group of 20-30 club members that used to have weekly meetings there we stopped going. The prices continued to go higher even before the gas prices did and thier service kept getting worse. We would request seating for our group before we got there but they woudn't even put 20-30 seats together until we arrived (even though we were there every week). Most time we had to wind up sitting out side because the dining room had gotten full. One evening, it started to rain and they had no room for us inside. We all of had to crowd under this what little covering they did have on the third patio. There was no romm for us and tables, so we all had to eat standing up with rain blowing on us. They said they could not even give us a discount for the trouble. We again asked them if they could arange seating for us knowing we arrive every week at 7:30PM. We were told it was first come first seated and they didn't want to run out of seats for other by reserving so many seats for our group. After the rain inccident, we found another place to have our weekly meetings and the management has no problem with seating us. Pros: Love the patio (on nice days) Cons: Everything else more

horrible customer service 2/15/2008

Some of my friends and I decided to go over there for dinner. First of all, they told us we would wait for 45 minutes-an hour for a table inside and turned out that they asked us to eat outside (even though it was cold). They made us get up ourselves to order and pay and they tried charging us more for what we ordered. Pros: ambiance Cons: everything else! more

Great For So Many Different Kinds of Nights 11/15/2006

This is a great place! Perfect for a romantic get away where you can snuggle with your sweetie on one of the old couches, or hide on the patio and listen to the frogs in the pond by the twinkle of lights. Great for times you need alone time to recharge by reading a book and sipping a cup of coffee/tea. The staff will never rush you - even if you haven't ordered more than that cup of joe and have been hanging around for hours. The patio (there are three of them!) is great for a group of friends to get together where you can be loud and boisterous. It's good for the after date stop for a glass of wine or a decadent dessert. The food is always top notch, with the specials hardly repeated. The wine list is long, the beer list eclectic, and the coffee always hot, fresh and tasty. Sunday brunch is more family oriented, and evening more adult. Crowd is a mix of ages, ethnicities, and orientations - and all mingle nicely. My favorite place in town! Pros: Ambience, food, wine Cons: parking more

Affordable 8/2/2006

Everyone is talking about the dang coffee being overpriced. I really think the coffeehouse in the name should be taken out. It is WAYYYYYYYYYYY more than any coffeehouse and I have been to many. This is an almost full service restaurant. Orders are placed at the bar. They give you a table tent. A server brings out your order. You closeout your ticket at the bar. NO TIPPING the server--c'mon. A full menu (not just sandwhiches w/daily specials). Overpriced--hell NO. For 2 dinners, 2 bottle of Champagne, 2 reg soft drinks, soups and dessert you ticket is $85. Then I don't have to tip. This is NO WAY $$$$$ it is more like $$. I loved the atmosphere cozy. You can hear your date or friends conversation. Towards the later hours of the evening there is more people arriving w/alternative lifestyles. So make sure that your date is not phobic or is cool w/that. I have no problem I just let them know ahead of time. GREAT PLACE. Pros: Value Value and ambiance Cons: Not enough parking more

User review by unrational 5/14/2006

I am a repeat visitor and agree, it is fairly over-priced but I think the great ambiance makes for a nice change of scenery from the usual monotony of Starbucks. Definately a good place for one of those first dates that you don't want to meet at a bar! It's quiet enough you can hear each other talk, but has enough background noise that the people at the next table won't be able to eavesdrop on your conversation. If you are hungry, they have cheese and fruit platters, as well. Parking- slightly difficult, shop is in an older section of downtown so if you go at night, it will seem dimly lit. Can park in front or on streets along side. I would still recommend it to any one of my friends, and I do. It's cute, stylish, and a great place to go for a night out with friends. Pros: Large Garden Patio Cons: Somewhat Expensive more

Good Surroundings 7/28/2005

Candlelight has a neat outdoor area with fountains, greenery, and even two friendly cats. However, the service and the general feel of the place seems to be lacking recently. The food also is overpriced; in fact, it used to be cheaper to eat the same fare not too long ago. Also, I'm disappointed by the portions. Although the food is average to good, the portions are much smaller. All in all, I would say this is a good place to go to once a month if you're a local. You go to candlelight when you want to sit outside admist the calm of a woods like atmosphere and sip some jo. The coffee is good and rightly priced! Pros: Scenery, Coffee Cons: Service, Cost more

Overall very average. 12/4/2004

For a city like San Antonio, overridden with Starbucks, Candlelight Coffeehouse is a welcome change. However, I feel that everything about the place is boringly average. Yeah, the ambiance is alright, but the coffee and service are just like any other coffee shop in the city (Starbucks included). The hours stink and the prices are somewhat high. But, if you are looking for a change and sick of the norm, check this place out. I personally could take it or leave it. more
