Calypso Cafe 5/5/2006

Although the atmosphere is definitely contrived, with umbrellas and grass and bright colors, this place is a good spot for a good meal, and possibly a tropical cocktail. The prices are normal for a decent sit-down dinner place ($8 to $15 for an entree or something like that.) The food is quite good, in my opinion, and maybe if I was more excited about Caribbean food, I would be there all the time. I've lived within a mile of this place since it opened and I've only been there three times. I don't anticipate suddenly deciding that it's the place to go, but I'm also certain I'll be back there some day. more

Jerk Chicken not real but the fish and plantains are great! 1/12/2006

I am Caribbean born and the jerk chicken here is fake. If you want the real thing you have to go to Jamaica or to the island of Tortola in the BVI. You can't see the island on the map but it's a nature. I grew up there and the real jerk chicken will have you choking your butt off. It makes your throat very sensitive after eating. So if you don't feel that way it's not real jerk. Besides the chicken I like plantain ripe and fried, and my talapia without the pineapples. Calypso is trying to bring some Caribbean flavor. I see the neighborhood people will think highly of it. I'm not knocking the business because I admire them for opening in such a strong based neighborhood where you can be denied quickly. Expect to pay small amounts for plenty of food. It's a great place to go. more

Tasty Caribbean Food 9/5/2005

Calypso Cafe is one of my favorite restaurants in Hyde Park. They serve delicious Caribbean food and drinks. The decor is tropical (the salt shakers are mini Carona bottles!) and the portions are huge. My favorites are the plaintain nachos, pineapple crusted tilapia, baby back ribs, and jerk chicken. Prices are very reasonable, especially since we always have left-overs. more
