A great help through difficult times 6/12/2007

I recently made funeral arrangements for a family member at Caldwell's, and we were relieved to find that the staff was very willing to work with us in our situation. We called around town and they were the only ones who were willing to work with us financially. It isn't easy to come up with a lot of money and when everyone in town says they need payment in full by the time of the funeral, we were in a spot, but Angela, our funeral director, treated us like people and not just business.\r \r The building is beautiful, the staff was all very helpful (though there was an older African American gentleman that was a little overbearing) and the funeral was really special to us. Our family really felt that our director went above her job, even going so far as to personally bring the death certificates to the doctor and meet with our very large family in our home. They aren't the cheapest in town, but our family has always used Caldwell's and we feel like we got a valuable service. I know that it isn't an easy job, and we appreciated the help and compassion of all the staff, and would definitely recommend their services. Pros: Treated like family, beautiful facilities Cons: Cost, situation more

Caldwell's Staff - Not good. 4/5/2007

Caldwell's was a nice funeral home a few years ago. I was recently at a funeral of a good family friend, and I was a bit surprised at the changes there. The services went well, but there was very little help when we needed things done. The funeral director girl seemed a bit occupied with personal matters, and rarely tended to our needs. She was always on her cell phone, and would disappear for long periods. Their prices are very high compared to a few years ago too.\r \r What happened to the nice people that once worked there? People who looked and dressed the part. People who wanted only the best for a once beautiful building that holds a lot of Portland's history. They need to bring back those people who gave decent attention to those who need it so much.\r \r I would watch out if you're thinking of going to take care of services at Caldwell's. Meet with the staff & view the building yourself. Make sure you are taken care of by a professional, and not someone who doesn't care.\r \r I hope they get their act together or they will be loosing a lot of business in the future. Pros: Unprofessional Staff, High cost Cons: Historic building, Ambience more
