Incredible evening 5/22/2012

Last Friday we had a rehearsal dinner for my son at Cafe Alma - 75 people including children - and it was the perfect evening! The rehearsal ended early - they accomodated some arriving early for drinks - The food was excellent - the service was excellent - working with Kristine was easy - I cannot say enough about the entire experience. The crab cakes should not be missed - I loved the chicken parmesean and grouper and heard the filet was excellent - and what a YUMMY dessert - so moist. Will go back every time I am in St. Pete! more

Always a Fun Place for Dinner 7/28/2011

Great place for an escape from American dining. Walking in is like going to a restaurant in Europe. The menu is tailored for foodies, not the normal boring American palate. I can't think of anywhere else in St Pete to get steak tar-tare, let alone a fabulous tasting version like Alma has. They also have great salmon carpaccio, chorizo and chick pea empanadas, and piri piri shrimp. They also have a great craft beer selection with 4 or 5 on tap plus a very good wine list. Highly recommend it when you are looking for something different or if you just love food. more

Wait. Wait. Wait. 5/22/2011

Hey I love this places food and the atmosphere. I have visited for brunch a couple of times in the past 5 weeks. Servers are nice, and seem to be busy, not slacking - however for some reason everything seems to take forever. I don't know if they have some crazy hard system to deal with there or what. Last time I went, after I was seated, to the time I received my check was an hour and 15. This was for two brunch specials and two glasses of coke. We were not in a hurry or anything, but after awhile you just want to get on with your day, you know? This morning we stopped in for brunch. We were seated right away, but a server never visited our table. I tried to catch someone's attention but no luck, and the hostess was not up front. We left after about 20 minutes. I love the food there. I think it is excellent. The place has a good vibe. It seems to gather a good variety of people. I just think I am going to try out some other places for a while until they get some gas in the tank for energy. more

not good - disappointment 5/13/2011

After all the rave reviews, I chose to take a family member that I hadn't seen in ages in Cafe Alma. I have never been so embarassed in my life. We arrived at nearly 7 and the noise level was incredible. The place was nearly empty, but the repetitive music was much too loud. The service was slow and the waiter acted n slow motion. The eggplant stack on the web menu is no longer available, which was a real disappointment to veg family members. The prices were exorbitant. The caesar salad was pale and boring, and the beef tip risotto was a joke. No presentation, and the beef resembled shoe leather. One prix fixe and risotto with water cost nearly $60 with tip. 2 salads, one tapas of 5 meatballs (the waiter said there would be 8) and water was nearly $40 with tip. I will Never, Ever return. I've had better food out of a can. In addition, the owners - husband/chef and wife were both defensive and rude when they learned of my experience. They did, however, offer a credit, but then several weeks later nothing had been credited. I then followed up by email with no response. It took a conference call with my bank and the restaurant to get this resolved a month later. Not good.\r more

Top Notch!!! 5/6/2011

Cafe Alma is a staple in the downtown St. Pete experience. If you have not checked out Cafe Alma yet, I recommend anyone coming to/ visiting St. Pete to stop in and try Cafe Alma. As you can see, I frequent there about 2-3 times a week. I work right around the corner. The service and food is Top Notch and the atmosphere is nice and relaxing. On the weekend Cafe Alma offers an amazing Brunch Special as well that is out of this world. So if you find yourself in the area make sure you stop more

I LOVE CAFE ALMA!!! 2/7/2011

I go to Cafe Alma for lunch just about 3-4 times a week. Not once that I have been there have I got bad service or bad food. Cafe Alma is easily one of my favorite places to dine in downtown. more

Never a complaint 6/30/2010

I've never had anything but great experiences here. The $9.95 lunch special can't be beat... sandwich or burger, soup or salad, a side and a soda. Go with the turkey and avocado on pita and you'll have plenty left for dinner, too. Great beer selection, attentive bartenders, and a crowd with a good vibe. Its my favorite place. Pros: Sexy decor, thoughtful food Cons: Shorter weekday hours more

Great Food and Service in St. Petersburg 6/3/2010

We dined in on a pretty busy night this week and service was spot on. Food was exceptional. We had 5 tapas' and tried a few different beers. They had two for 1 on magic hats and the tapas were half price. We switched it up on the beers because the beer book is HUGE. Lot's of crafty beers. I likes. Don't remember the servers name, but he was a really nice guy. We sat in a booth with a couch like seating arrangement. It was different, but super comfortable. Going to try in again soon and hope to have the same experience. Pros: Huge Beer Selection and Great Food Cons: Hard to Find more

MY kitchen extension 3/10/2010

Went to Cafe Alma last Friday and had a great meal, our server was indeed very pleasant even when they were so busy you could see they are working hard to take care of the tables. The place was packed. I had the Alma trio, it had steak, their amazing crab cake and shrimp and scallop skewer, started with a half house salad and had a bite sized dessert. It was so good that i almost did not want to finish all my food but take it home to enjoy later. I didn't see my favorite manager christine, she is always delightful and pleasing, instead they had a new guy who was a grump and was more focused busing tables than talking to guests, who was mia most of the time. To sum it up my group had fun and will hope to be back soon and see the little lady Christine. The menu is incredible. Oh they do add gratuity to discounted meals and a party more than 6 especially when everyone requests for split checks, if you come in on Tuesday Tapas night and get a bigger discount since it is half price tapas and wines they will add gratuity where we as customers also need to remember that that is how the servers earn livelihood, let us not forget that we had great food and to top that it is discounted, let us not be greedy. Pros: Greatest food flavors & Deals Cons: new manager grump more

Beware, 18% gratuity is automaticly added to bill 12/22/2009

Only 2 of us, It was happy hour, so we had 2 for 1 drinks, short glasses with cheap tastless mix,,, ordered appetizers, most were ok,, but the calamari was overcooked and drowned in sauce,, the young waitress had an attitude of indifference,,,then she added a 18% gratuity to herself. Being new in the area we paid it, but will never go back there again, or rec it to anyone. It should be up to the patron to decide how much to tip, based on service and the dining experience, not the establishment,or wait staff. Pros: some food is ok Cons: why be forced to pay extra for bad service?? more

Keeps getting better.... 4/25/2008

We heard that Cafe Alma had new owners and went to go check it out this past Wed. evening. \r We had a warm greeting from one of the new owners named Tony. The food was amazing and so was the service. We were very pleased to find out that Wed.'s were always 2-4-1 drink night. (bonus) After Dinner we sat at the bar and has some great conversations with some other patrons. We give this restaurant 5 stars and plan on returning to give their new Sunday Brunch a taste. We can't wait. Pros: Food, drinks, Service Cons: They are not open 24/7 more

Best Place in Downtown St. Pete 1/14/2008

I grew up in St. Pete and I love what is happening in the downtown area. My favorite spot is Cafe Alma. Great food, great service and best of all Saturday Brunch and the bloody mary bar. I have seen many places come and go lately but Cafe Alma is here to stay... they really know how to please. Pros: open lunch and dinner and yummy saturday brunch Cons: closed on sundays more

Wonderful first date place 10/15/2007

very interesting setting with its brick arches and local art adorning its walls. The servers are prompt and quite adept at remebering recurring customers. I've ordered everything from the Fromage to the Filet Mignon and I have not yet had a mediocre experience. At times some of the dishes have been disagreable and when I raised the issue, I have received a comparable dish in exchange. The atmosphere is dark and intimate (though, it can be claustrophobic if one doesn't like enclosed places). Everyone that I have brought to Cafe Alma have been enchanted with it as much as I have and several are now repeat customers. The wine selection is top notch and so is the microbrews. Though, Saturday Brunch deserves special mention with its Build-your-own Bloody Marys and wonderful hollandaise dishes. \r \r Essentially, if you have not been there and are looking for a nice pricey (well, its comparable to Outback) dinner or drinks type place, try it out. Pros: Ambience Cons: Parking more

Terrible Customer Service 9/18/2007

Went there for my birthday. As a party of 8 we were not shy to order 4 bottles of wine, liquors and liquor coffees. Along with starters, entres and desserts. the Service- Hey sorry what service was horrific. The little ( I think the once we saw the waitress) we saw of the waitress she had an attitude to boot. Doing us a right royal favour with her presence.\r We even ordered more drinks at the bar (the bartender was awesome). The food was fab but service really dismal. Do not go there on a special occasion as it can really put a dampner on your special evening! Pros: Good Food Cons: Terrible Service- Infact what service more

Bad food, awful service 2/21/2007

I went to Cafe Alma the other day for lunch upon a friend's suggestion. I had heard rave reviews & took a friend with me. It was a week day, 1:00. We got there & were told there'd be a 30 minute wait, but there was hardly any one inside or out of the restaraunt. We were told the problem was a shortage in staff. We turned to leave but the hostess recommended sitting at the bar & we'd get full service, the bar was also empty. We sat & it took 15 minutes to an iced tea. An hour later we were still waiting for our food, a panini and a salad. No explanation from the server. We told him we needed to get back to work as the lunch hour was over. He said he'd be back in a minute with our food. It took another 15 minutes. We got back to work & started to eat our food but the chicken on my sandwich was tough & chewy & the fries were soggy. My friend's slamon salad, the fish was not cooked thoroughly. I would not recommend Cafe Alma to anyone. The food was disgusting and the service even worse. Stay away from this place! Pros: The building itself is beautiful Cons: Bad food, bad service. more

don't waste your time 11/21/2006

We went there for my bday and were highly disappointed. Price and food quality don't match. I don't mind paying but when it's worth it. In our case it was a disaster. \r I had sirloin steak from the winter menu - mashed potatoes were hard as a rock, both potatoes and zuccini were cold. The waiter offered to reheat it but there is no excuse why they were cold on the first place. Steak was a little warmer. At the end we got charged for 3 teas instead of 2 and overcharged $2 on martini. \r I would not recomend this place to anybody. more
