If you're not interested in being wow-ed this is an ok place to grab a quick bite... definitely not overly appealing--- for one, the tables are covered in clear plastic, which is ...

Kinda Delicious 10/10/2010

Went here for lunch with a friend today and thought the food was pretty excellent. Had micheladas (the best I've had in the city thus far, no doubt - the bartender obviously takes great care) and chips and guac, which for the record, was not spicy in the slightest. It was fresh, though nothing special. The chips were also served with a green tomatillo dipping sauce that was out of this world. I had braised pork belly tacos in tamarind sauce with jicama and apple slaw, which was also delicious (though I found the tortillas a bit mealy after being drenched in tamarind sauce). My friend had huevos rancheros and ate every last bite. Th waiter was friendly and attentive and explained the menu and specials adequately. I'll definitely go back, worth if if only for the drinks and tomatillo sauce! more

Good food, lousy service 8/23/2010

Ya, it's good. But the waiter was so rude it spoiled the meal. Wondered if he was on drugs, up and down, hostile then sort of polite, then just couldn't care... A lot of $$ to pay for that.... more

I love Cabrito! 7/31/2010

I've been to Cabrito many times and have always loved it, but tonight was really amazing. I ordered everything off the daily specials menu- fresh from the farmers market. I started with the charred hot peppers, guacamole and the heirloom tomatoes. There were 3 different kinds of peppers- some were spicy and interesting and others were blow your head off spicy. The guac was great as always, but the tomatoes with sea salt was truly awesome, with some kind of mexican vegetable that they called a mini watermellon. Next I got the "esquites" (seasonal corn), which to me tastes like the best hot buttered popcorn on the planet. Then, the chard with bacon. This was tasty and slightly spicy but a great combo without being overpowering. Lastly, I got the new dessert which was a home made pumpkin brittle with vanilla ice cream and caramel. I never eat dessert but this was heaven. I hope they keep this on the menu. Cabrito is truly the dark horse of the fatty restaurants. Yum! Pros: Fresh Market Specials more

Good service, great drinks, very pricey for mexican 12/19/2009

We ate here on a Sat. night with four people. Our waiter was super attentive and always made sure we had drinks and was great about explaining the menu. The drinks were good but pricey..$10 for a marg. and $10-15 for a small tequila. The food was decent quality but for the price not worth it. For 1/3 of the price I've had significantly better in jersey city of all places. I like this restaurant but the prices are too high. Lupes in the city has similar food at half the price. Pros: service, drinks Cons: price more

Best margs and Hot staff=nobrainer girls! 12/13/2009

I went out last weekend with all the girls and we decided to go back to our mexican love Cabrito, as some of my co workers and I think its great. We had such a blast! Happy hour was bumping and the margs are sooooo good! The cute bartenders kept giving us these yummy not too sweet but not watered down at all shots of tequila and hibiscis or something(I might have drank just about anything they were serving:) We decided to stay for dinner as we were joined by four other friends and without a reservation on a friday night the manager was able to move tables and rearrange the room to fit all 9 of us! That doesn't happen in this city as far as I know. If you haven't been try it out, the enchiladas are delicious and awesome tacos Pros: $5 margs at happy hour, hot bartenders, yummy food Cons: I never leave sober! more

This place rocks! 7/1/2009

This place is awesome! The food is spot on and the drinks are very well balanced. This is one of the best mexican restaurants in NYC for sure (real mexican, not that tex mex garbage)! Pros: Carnitas and margaritas Cons: My date more

Skip the food 5/17/2009

I would recommend skipping the food and sitting at the bar with a pitcher of margaritas! I would skip the Cabrito NO WAY was it worth $26 very small if two people want to share. We had pulled pork and fish tacos, they were average, nothing to brag about. My gfriend had the chicken since she does not eat meat, I am not a huge fan of any chicken dish, but this was good! The coconut rice was so good and should be offered as a side. But overall I would go just for the margaritas! We had a watermelon pitcher and it was fantastic. * there are a lot of other great date places..I say skip. more

JUST GET THE SHORT RIBS 4/30/2009

All you need to know is get a bees knees to start with some rajas then get the short ribs and all will be right with the world. Pros: Fresh ingredients and good vibe more

Great Time 3/1/2009

Went there after work w/ a few friends...wanted to try the best drinks they could make us and we weren't dissapointed. They take serious pride in their cocktail making. If the complementary chips and guac don't fill you up, order some of the small tacos to keep yourself upright(bartender Kwame tries his best to tip you over with his good yet well proportioned drinks)... more

Great Mexican food is here! 2/23/2009

The food is fabulous and the prices are even better. The atmosphore cozy and fun. Staff attentive and helpful. I recommend the Cabrito.if you want the best mexican food in the city, go here. Pros: food, attantive service more

Honestly the best mexican food I've ever had 2/13/2009

Seriosly, I've been to mexico several times, lived in arizona, and would rather eat at Cabrito! The carnitas are deliciously tender and crispy at the same time, the Pozole is awsome (and it comes with pork ribs!) corn tortillas are Soooo fresh. Chef Dave Shutenberg ( wierd he's a gringo) is a god and handsome too! brunch rocks, dinner, rules, lunch is honestly the best time to check it out, not hard to get a table, like it can be at night. Although waiting at the huge bar and sampling awsome cocktails, and the great tequilla menu, is as much fun as diving into the house made choriso hurache! Go to this restraunt ready to have a good time and eat great food!!! No realy, go now! Right now! more

A long wait and pricey drinks... 2/11/2009

We waited close to two hours when we were initially told it would only be thirty. We also watched the bar tender thinning out the drink with soda when my drink didn't call for it: club soda really waters down a drink when the glass is already filled to the top with ice. The food however was pretty good and fairly reasonably priced. Pros: good food Cons: expensive drinks, long wait, snooty servers more

Best Mexican Restuarant in West Village 1/27/2009

If you are going for a drink or just to get a bite to eat, give your taste buds a treat and head over to Cabrito, in the West Village. You won't be disappointed. Great food + Great people = A great meal Pros: The food is delicious. more

fabulous food, great staff 1/25/2009

The food is fresh and delicious, the margaritas are made with good tequila, fresh lime juice and little else, and the staff is fabulous. What more could you possibly want? Go before it's too busy to get in. more

AWESOME!!! Must check this place out... 1/5/2009

Awesome drinks, very cool bartenders and the steak taco's are simply the best. We came in on a Saturday night and had a great experience. I am telling all my friends about this place and probably going back tonight! more

great staff! yummy food 1/1/2009

i live in Maryland, but frequent NY often. One place i must go everytime is Cabrito. The food is amazing. I'm from California originally and I can never find good guacamole on the east coast, but Cabrito's guac is yummy and just like home. Besides the food being great, the staff makes it worthwhile to stop by. They welcome everyone with a smile. Sit at the bar and chat with the friendly Denson. He'll also make you a fierce margarita! Be careful, they come with a hidden kick in the pants. See you guys soon! Pros: food, margaritas, staff, jesus in the bathroom Cons: always leave too full and drunk more

Try the Carnitas!!! 12/30/2008

The Carnitas are awesome! I dont know how they get them so crispy and juicy at the same time! They came with home made tortillas which were amazing as well as some green salsa and crema. We also did a flight of reposado tequilas, most i've never heard of (they have about 50 types), but they were really tasty. Def check this place out! Pros: Carnitas and Tequila!!! more

This place just started brunch...It rocks!! 12/13/2008

My girlfriend and I live in the neighborhood and have been waiting for Cabrito to start doing brunch. Finally, they started this week and it was awesome! The menu has about 10-12 choices for $12 per person and you can add on 3 brunch drinks for an additional $9!! We werent planning on drinking but at that price how could we say no? The bloody mary was amazing...nice and spicy. As far as food we had french toast that was crusted with corn flakes & canela, a spicy mexican eggs benedict on brioche, and best of all bisquits & gravy with chorizo...All around the meal was awesome. I highly recommend Cabrito. Pros: Check out for brunch!! more

Really good food, but a great experience! 11/18/2008

I was coming home from work (7th ave west village) and passed this mexican place. My coworkers and I stopped in for their happy hour and had a blast. The margaritas were all fresh juices, the steak tacos were outstanding perfect seasoning and cooked med rare, but the kicker was the service. When we arrived we were greeted by the bartenders welcoming, "make yourselves comfy anywhere like." We ordered our drinks and, on the house, the manager let me try a different little more expensive tequila in my margarita. I think it was reposado something but it was truly the best margarita I've ever had! The bartender then told me all about what I was drinking and where it was from in mexico, and before I knew it my three coworkers had finished their beers and ordered a pitcher with the same recommended tequila. We stayed for about three hours and had a really good time. We will be back at least once a week after a night like that! Pros: on the way home... Cons: its on the way home!!! more

Why go out after dinner with a place like this... 11/9/2008

First I must say how nice the staff was to me and my girlfriend...I don't know much about mexican food and was literally guided through the menu by our waiter...most of the things I couldn't pronounce (pizzoli & pollo barbacowa) were amazing and I never would have tried them if I wasn't helped...the drinks were good and strong, unlike most places around town, and our dred headed waiter even bought us a round of shots (does anyone even do that anymore?)Then this is the craziest part... when we were done we could see that there was alot of people waiting to sit and eat, but the staff didn't make us feel like we had to get up at all, in fact they bought us churros instead...my girl loves dark chocolate and these little fried dough things sealed it for her...we will definitly be back soon with our friends Pros: Awesome vibe...everyone seemed to be having a great time Cons: not in my neighborhood! more

"Favorite Inexpensive Restaurant" by Frank Bruni of the New York Times

Editorial
  • In Short
The pink goat piñata suspended from the entrance perfectly represents the vibe inside this cantina: colorful, loud and fun. The menu reflects the same personality, with chef David Schuttenberg (Fatty Crab) promoting lively south-of-the-border street food. The menu features tacos, of course, featuring braised beef tongue and beer-battered fried fish, and huaraches, thick masa "sandals" with toppings like huitlacoche. But most people come here to get their goat--that's the spot's slow-roasted specialty, seasoned with sour orange, garlic and chili.
