BEST place to get it done right, and FAST! 10/27/2011

I have a 1994 Dodge Ram 3500 4x4 that had had the transfer case rebuilt shortly after I bought it. It was trying to jump out of 2hi going down the road. Local transmission ""expert"" said he could fix it. I paid him nearly $1400 to rebulid the t-case and go thru the NV4500 transmission, which had 3rd gear synchro out. 4 months later the t-case started jumping out of 2hi again... I did some research and had a few friends reccomend C&M Gear Works. I called and talked to one of the guys on the phone and told him the problem. He says ""If we have all the parts, I can usually get it back out within a day"". I feed about 700 cows a day with this truck, so I can't afford to be without it for long. I tell him I'll try to have it out and to him by 8 or 9 am next day. I didn't get to Springfield until 10 am, so I'm thinking I'm screwed for the day. I get there and Chris says ""Let's go take a look at it"". We dollied it back to one of the guys and put it on his stand. He tore it down, found some screw ups the ""expert"" had made, and rebuilt that thing in under 3 HOURS! I was back home with my truck running by 5 pm THAT DAY! (And... I live 75 miles away!) There will never be another manual transmission, t-case, or diff taken anywhere else from ANY of my equipment!\r \r Also, I want to mention the Speedo gear issue... Not quite a month after I got the t-case back in, the speedo quit. I figured it was a sensor. I bought one and installed it. Didn't fix the problem. I figured the sensor drive gear had stripped out. Ordered one from my local Dodge dealer. When I went to install it, I noticed the sensor was clocked wrong. It had chewed both the output shaft gear and the sensor gear to shreds... I called C&M and asked if they had one, which Dave said yes to. When I mentioned the problem, he sent me the drive gear at no charge!!! It was an honest mistake that could've happened to anyone, but they took care of it. HONESTY AND INTEGRITY... Did I mention, all this happened on the 29th of September 2011? less than a week after they'd just moved to their new location on Trafficway? They were working out of large totes on pallets! Boxes where everywhere! I cannot express how impressed I was with these guys. I WATCHED them tear my t-case down in front of me. asked questions. eyeballed their barbeque grill... \r Best Gear Shop around. PERIOD\r \r Brad Wans\r Stoutland MO more

In response to ""Not a good product"" 6/3/2011

I am Chris Gordon the owner of C & M Gearworks. I would like to respond to ""Honest reviews"". He brought his truck in on 8-23-2006 to change the ratio in his Dana 80 from 4:10 to 3:73 to try to get better fuel mileage. His total bill was 849.47 which included a Dana gearset, complete bearing kit, labor and grease. A far cry from the $1500 he claims he spent at CATT. He did leave his old gearset with us but made no mention of hanging on to it for later use. On 11-10-2006 he came back to go back to 4:10's as the 3:73's didn't help his mileage and the 4:10's pulled his big bumper hitch trailer better. I told him since we had either used or sold his old gears I would just trade him straight accross for the 3:73's he had in there now and only charge him $300 labor. Everything was fine until 7-29-2009 when he brought the truck in with the gearset and positrac differential destroyed. We completely rebuilt the rear end with a new Dana positrac, Yukon gearset and bearing kit, along with Lucas synthetic 75-140 gear oil and Ford positrac additive with a total cost of 1328.99. He did bring the truck back several times to have it checked and all we ever found was the gear oil was as thin as water, and some loose hub bearings which he didn't seem concerned about fixing. We even installed an alluminum rear cover for added capacity and better cooling. So when he came in earlier this year after nearly 2 years and 60,000 miles and said ""the rear end is out again"" and that his friend or neighbor had diagnosed the problem I suggested maybe he should have him fix it, and that I had no interest in working on his truck again. If there was a problem with our work or our products it wouldn't have taken 60,000 miles to go out. This guy is the exception and not the rule with our customer satisfaction. I have a feeling he won't be happy anywhere for very long. more

Not a good product or place to do business.\r Several years ago I went to C & M to change from 4.10s to 3.73 gears to try to help fuel mileage. I told Chris to keep my old gears in case I decided to change back. 1 month later I came back to put the original gears back in. He had sold them. He said I will replace them, which he did, with aftermarket gears. 2 years later the gears went bad. I talked with him and felt that 60,000 miles was very poor for a differential gear to last. Not only did he replace the ring and pinion, but it ruined the carrier bearing as well. Almost $1500 for gears that should not be going bad. I stated wouldn't it be a good idea to go back to the original gears? He said no and that there was no difference (bullcrap). After they installed them I went back 5 times due to noise in the rear end. They kept telling me (and charging me) that there was nothing wrong. I stated to them that the gears are not supposed to make noise when installed properly. I had talked with more

Not a good product or place to do business. 2/25/2011

Several years ago I went to C & M to change from 4.10s to 3.73 gears to try to help fuel mileage. I had talked with Ford and another installer. Again he reassured me that the gears were properly installed and aligned. Less than a year and a half goes by and they are bad again (by the way the gears going bad are made by Yukon). I went to talk with him today and he stated that it did not matter that I brought them back because they were put in right. I stated that with 45,000 miles that there had to be a problem as the original gears he had taken out had more miles than both sets he had installed and they were still good when he had removed them as he had sold them. He refused to stand behind his product or labor. He would not work with me on anything and got mad with me (I was talking in a reasonable tone as I wanted to get a reduced price). Then accused me of setting him up, ""oh, so your best friend is telling you they are bad."" No, checked out by a reputable mechanic who works on my truck (he doesn't rebuild rear ends but knows what the symptoms are). Then I had his competition check it out, they stated before pulling out the bearings were bad and the ring and pinion was making noise. I said you are more than welcome to test drive it. He refused, then told me he did not want my business. I assume because I figured out he sells poor made products and refused to stand behind his work. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Take it to Catt, as the first thing they told me was to put the original Dana (Ford) gears in and there pricing for the original Dana gears was less than $60 more (Ford gears are more expensive but MUCH better quality). more

Honest and Cheap, a nice guy to boot. 7/23/2006

The best place to get any manual transmission, transfer case, rear diff work done in Springfield. The guy is super honest, which seems rare in this kind of business, and a genuinely nice guy. His prices are also the best in town. He doesnt try and sell you extra services like so many other places do. He doesnt do work that you didnt agree on ahead of time. No hidden charges here. Pros: Honest and very cheap. Cons: Doesnt do automatic transmissions more
