Best

I had a perfectly poured Guiness and the most delicious fish and chips I've ever had for lunch. We sat on the patio on a beautiful day and really enjoyed the atmosphere. I can't...

sooo crowded. people were trying too hard to be cool. not much else to do in the area. try central square area instead.

Hearty food near Davis 4/27/2010

This was a solid place for a heavy winter meal. The service kind of sucks... the waitress seemed really stressed out and annoyed that she was working and barely stopped to take our order, let alone ask how everything was doing as the meal progressed. I had some clam chowder, which was delicious, and sampled some of my boyfriend's steak - it was decent, definitely better than we could have cooked but not outstanding or anything. I hear their 80s night is pretty fun as well. Good selection of beer. Pros: Hearty food, good beer Cons: Inattentive service more

Great place for lunch 10/4/2009

I had a perfectly poured Guiness and the most delicious fish and chips I've ever had for lunch. We sat on the patio on a beautiful day and really enjoyed the atmosphere. I can't wait to try it out at night for after work drinks and dinner. Pros: good draft beer, great food, cheap prices Cons: none more

One of my favorite Irish bars 2/22/2009

I always have fun here. Not only is the Irish music good, but the bar also has 80s/90s bands. A perfect place to bring friends and spend the night out. The bartenders are *decent* for such a busy place, but once you make yourself a regular, drinks are easy to come by. What I like most about the Burren is the layout. There is ample room to sit, dance, talk, etc Pros: good crowd, lotta young professionals Cons: parking more

Great Irish pub 12/19/2007

I love this place. It definitely is as authentic as you can get for an Irish pub. A lot of the bartenders and bouncers are actually from Ireland, and I don't think I can remember a time I've been there when I haven't heard at least one Irish accent among the people in front of the bar as well. I recently found out that the owners actually live in Ireland, so I suppose that's part of the reason why it's so legit. The live music in the front is consistently good, and the beer selection is great. The atmosphere is really warm and cozy, and at Christmas time they put up a lot of decorations and lights, which makes it feel like a movie set or something. The food is also pretty good, a little more on the average side and they have a relatively small menu, but it's cheapish. The only downside--and I suppose you get this at any bar--is that they won't let you sit at the tables until 9:00 if you're not getting dinner. Normally that wouldn't be that big of a deal, but since it feels more like a pub in there than a restaurant, it's a little annoying. Otherwise, though, it's great. One thing to note if you're a veggie-burger lover: they fry their veggie burgers, and they're not quite like any other one I've had. They're good, just different. It can just be a little unexpected the first time. Pros: Cozy atmosphere, authentic Irish pub, good beer selection, good music Cons: Can't sit at the tables until 9:00, cover charge even if you don't plan on seeing the band in the back room more

Brings Ireland back to Boston! 10/17/2007

No better Irish bar outside of Boston Propper---at least not that i've found! Lot's of live music, Irish and otherwise, and on Tuesday nights (i think) they even have Irish Step-dancing lessons in the back. Great pints, great accents. It's Boston, it's Ireland, and it's right there in Davis Square!! Pros: People, Music, Atmosphere Cons: Parking. Same as any other place in Davis. more

As Irish as it gets 8/1/2007

If you're looking for Live Irish music then you gotta check out the Burren. I never like paying a cover in Davis sq. with The Joshua Tree, Redbones and Orleans nearby, but the Burren has a one of a kind atmosphere. There are two rooms. The first is a kind of gathering area with a good bar. The second is where the music is at with room for dancing or whatever it is a bunch of grads and undergrads do to Irish music. This place is jumping every St. Patrick's Day morning. more

A Thursday night must. 11/21/2006

One of the constants in Boston for me over the past 5 years is guaranteed great time at the Burren on Thursday night's. Not for the Irish music being played in the front room or the thickly-accented and friendly bartenders, but the 80's cover band the Swinging Johnsons playing in the back room It is always packed, espeically when the Tuft's students are in session, but it is worth it. I want the Swinging Johnson's to play at my wedding. They are that good. Pros: Thursday night constant in my life. Cons: I don't live any where close to Davis Square. more

Best Pint in Cambridge...maybe even Boston metro 11/10/2006

Great pint of Guinness! Spent the last 3 St. Paddy Days at the Burren and will be back for more. Great Irish music in the front room. Can get a bit crowded. Pros: Belly up and order a pint; close to the T; plenty to eat and drink in the area Cons: Usually over-crowded more

The Burren is Awesome 9/14/2005

The food is fantastic! Whether you get a burger or baked fish, they do everything just right, and the service is great! All those Irish lilts... so adorable! And for the money they give you a lot of what you're Pros: Great Food/Drinks, Good Value for Money, Good Service Cons: Crowded, No Parking, Limited Music Acts more

A nice place to get dinner and drinks 3/9/2003

I recently stopped in at The Burren and found it to be a very comfortable place to get dinner and drinks. The fish and chips was good and the place had a good selection of beers on tap. I was pleased with the service and will definitely go back. Pros: Atmosphere, Service, Selection of beers Cons: Limited menu more

No finer place to enjoy a pint 1/10/2003

I can't think of a single place I'd rather drink a Guinness. Friendly staff, exceptional music, esp. Thursday nights. In my opinion the food is underrated. Healthy mix of nearby college crowd and older folks looking for great atmosphere. Always festively decorated - you never have to wait long to place your order. Top notch in my opinion. Pros: Great atmosphere, Friendly staff, Outstanding music Cons: No bathroom mirrors, Crowded, Not cheap more

Irish Best 12/14/2002

TheBurren is simply the best Irish bar in the New England.......I can say this because I have been to most of them. It is one step from being back in Ireland....Food, Atmosphere. Beer, it doesn't get any better!!! more

great beers, great music, tends to get really crowded really quickly. more

Perfect Neighborhood Pub 8/15/2002

Without a doubt one of the best bars in Boston. When visitors come into town they are all looking for the quintescential "Boston Irish Pub" and this is it. Always great music in the back room, always a good crowd with a mix of young, old, townies, yuppies. You can arrive in cut-offs or a suit...doesn't matter. Also the Swinging Johnsons on Thursday nights are always a fun cover band. Pros: Music, Beer selection, Near T Cons: Crowded, Food more

The Burren is a great Pub that really makes you feel like you're in County Cork. They pour a great pint of Guinness and the live music in the back is generally great. Definitely NOT a pick-up bar though . .. unless you're into Tufts' sophmores. more

Best bar in Boston area!! 5/23/2002

The $25 for paddy's day was necessary because the place was just the right amount of crowded. If they charged $5 it would have been out of control. more

Editorial
  • The Scene
Irish music and dancing are the centerpiece at this large Davis Square pub, which is usually packed with a boisterous crowd of Tufts grads and undergrads. But don't count out folks from the other side of the river who are looking for live music, a great beer selection (Guinness, Murphy's Irish Stout and Caffrey's, to name a few) and perhaps a phone number or two.

    The Draw
The Burren's secret weapon is the music. You'll find an authentic, Irish-style gathering of musicians grouped around a table seven nights a week. The Backroom also plays host to a variety of local and visiting performers and a weekly open mic night. A popular weekend brunch (served 10am-3pm) allows homesick expats to enjoy full Irish breakfasts. The lunch and dinner menus consist of familiar pub fare (fish and chips, shepherd's pie, bangers and mash).
