Editorial review from Citysearch 2/16/2014

We took our golden retriever, Sandy, to Dr. Smith for the first time last year when we moved here to retire. We were very impressed with the way he treated Sandy and us when he did her yearly checkup. Unfortunately, we had to take Sandy to see Dr. Smith a few weeks ago because she suddenly became ill-she was getting to be an old girl-14-I guess when you love your friend as much as we loved her, you think she will live forever! Anyway, Dr. Smith was so kind and sensitive and worked to try to hopefully give her more time. We took her on Friday and he gave us meds and instructions for her care and said he would call and check on her Saturday morning (his office is closed on weekends). He called Saturday and we felt she was doing a little better so he said he would call Sunday morning. He did and Sandy was not doing well so he had us come in immediately. He made sure he rechecked her blood levels and all the other tests required to verify her condition. After this, we knew she was very uncomfortable and we didn't want to ever cause her undue suffering so we had to put her down. Dr. Smith and his assistant were so compassionate and caring - we all cried when she calmly drew her last breath. \r We have had many pets and have loved them all. We have also visited many vets in the past but we have never been comfortable with anyone more than Dr. Smith. We feel he went above and beyond to work with us to take care of our wonderful friend. We highly recommend him. more

Better than I could have hoped! 5/30/2012

I just moved to the area in January and needed a vet for my 4 legged son. My in-laws recommended Dr. Smith and I was very pleased with the service and availability of the doctor and his staff. I think the prices are very reasonable and they dote on my sweet boy! I can't imagine anyone could say anything bad about this doctor. more

couple with a bad agenda 1/14/2010

The the letters posted above and below are from one couple with an agenda. We have been in business in Bryson City for 26 years and our reputation has never been attacked untill now. This couple presented their pet with a disease called Blastomycosis. It is expensive to diagnose and treat, unfortunately their dog was in the late stages of the disease and did not survive. They had very limited funds to spend and we accomodated them as best we could with those circumstances. They never paid their remaining bill and in return accused us of killing their pet. Much time was spent in explanation of the disease and I also shared a personal experience with them concerning a much beloved pet of my own that was lost to the disease. more

If you care about your pet go elsewhere 9/6/2009

Dr. Smith has a high opinion of himself and what he charges reflects that. Unfortunately, our recent bad experience with Bryson City Veterinary Clinic and those of our friends/neighbors we have talked to that have dealt with him find his pet care and personality to be sub-par. After 6-7 negative responses from friends and neighbors with no positive comments, I stopped bothering to ask around as our experience appeared to be confirmed. Pros: Close location Cons: Too many to list here more

Dr. Smith has no bedside manner 9/5/2009

According to Dr Smith, you can't believe everything you read on the internet, even when it comes to fact sheets from pharmaceutical manufacturer websites. Well, I believe this is true when it comes to the good reviews I see for his office. I can't say anything with regard to what happened to our puppy one way or the other, but I can cite his childish and unprofessional behavior toward us in the aftermath. Pros: The other vet on staff is decent as far as I could tell. Cons: No way to count on getting the other vet in emergency. more
