Best

I've been to at least 10 different Thai places throughout Boston, but Brown Sugar is by far the best!!

Worst

I know that Pad Thai should be spicy but I prefer when it is more bland. We actually got take out from here one night because everyone raves about how awesome this restaurant is....

Such good food! 3/23/2007

I really love this place. It takes me a half an hour every time I go to figure out what I'm going to order--everything looks amazing! I've tried probably 5 or 6 dishes and they were all great. more

Authentic thai food: spicy and tasty as it should be 10/8/2006

I ate here for the first time and I was impressed at how delicious all the dishes were. Authentic Thai food is spicy and I am usually disappointed at other establishments that have bland food that looks and smells like thai but the flavor is no where to be found. I especially liked the pad thai that was sweet and spicy and not orange in color as I have seen in other places. The spicy beef is highly recommended for those craving for some real kick. Try the sticky rice over the regular jasmine rice, it goes so well it all the sauces left on your plate. The prices may be higher than what you are used to paying for thai food but the food is just that good. more

I loooove Brown Sugar Cafe 7/3/2006

I began eating at Brown Sugar during my college days at BU. This is a place I head for when I come back to Boston. You cannot beat their pad thai, and the fried ice cream for dessert is just decadent. The service is usually very professional, though remember to make a reservation if you are going on a weekend night. Prices are a little on the high side due to the restaurant's popularity. more

Very very good pad thai...I would highly recommend this. Keep in mind that it does get crowded though. make a reservation, it'll save you some time. Also, don't forget that they have 2 locations. more

when visiting I always stop here 4/3/2006

I live in San Francisco area now but whenever I go back to the east coast I make a special trip to Brown Sugar because their food is by far the best I've ever had. I think the Pad Thai is awesome and they have an amazing dessert of fried bananas with honey so make sure you leave room for dessert, you won't be sorry!!! more

Pad Thai is delicious and authentic but a bit too spicy 3/22/2006

I know that Pad Thai should be spicy but I prefer when it is more bland. We actually got take out from here one night because everyone raves about how awesome this restaurant is. I got the Pad Thai country style and it was so spicy I couldn't even finish it. It just was not for me. But they say it is the best of Boston for Thai food. more

You're Better Off Skipping This Place and Heading Across the Street! 3/19/2006

I used to live a block away from Brown Sugar and everytime I walked by, I was tempted by their lovely smells. I am a sucker for asian food, so I ended up going a number of times, but the food was never all that great. The place is always jam packed, but it seems like more of a tourist trap than a genuine good restaurant. To top it off, their prices are pretty high for the quality of food they serve. On one occasion, I found a piece of undercooked pork on my plate. That was the last time I ever visited. In my opinion, I would opt instead for the luscious italian restaurant directly across the street. They have some of the best italian food I've ever had (and that beats average asian food any day). more

nicely done ! 1/17/2006

It is a wonderful restaurant, great environment and romantic. It is a Thai American restaurant so not everything are spicy. The location is also really strategic and near the subway station. very clean restaurant and make me want to come back. Their mango with sticky rice is just absolutely wonderful. You gotta to try it. more

  • The Scene
The square dining room is crammed with tables, some spaced only inches apart and each boasting a pot of brown sugar. A few half-hearted attempts at Thai decor (maps, tapestries) prove that atmosphere is secondary to food. Christmas lights and foliage border the room, which is perpetually packed and abuzz with a steady din. Service is friendly and efficient.

    The Food
The voluminous menu guarantees that Thai traditionalists and newcomers alike will find something to try. Pages of traditional rice and noodle dishes, prepared without MSG, arrive as spicy as your taste buds can tolerate. So-called "gourmet originals" offer more than a dozen bases for a choose-your-own-adventure experience (like bok choi or basil) to which you add your choice of meats. Try "Siamese Twins," a massive portion of chicken, shrimp, pineapple and watercress in a hot sweet-and-sour sauce.
