A great place to take out of towners 8/19/2010

This is really one of the best ways to get a feel for the city. This bridge has been around for more than 100 years and is a one-of-a-kind structure. The bridge in itself is truly a microcosm of the city if you think about it - you get city views, street vendors, a historical perspective and an opportunity to experience the hostility of local pedestrians and bikers. more

Wow 7/22/2009

One of the city's-and the country's-greatest treasures 6/30/2008

Walking to Manhattan on the Brooklyn Bridge on a sunny day is like no other experience. The bridge itself is magnificent, and walking on it allows you to see just how beautiful it is. And of course, the view is absolutely spectacular. Lower Manhattan is just absolutely beautiful, and you even have a good view of the city beyond. End your walk by relaxing on a park bench in the gorgeous City Hall area and you've got yourself a great afternoon! more

I've got a bridge to sell you... 8/28/2002

There is nothing than shows off New York better than a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. The best time is to go just before the sunsets so that you can catch the sun going down behind the buildings and lighting up the sky. Go all the way over to Brooklyn and have dinner on Henry or Montague Streets. After dinner take a stroll on the Promenade for spectacular views of Manhattan. Pros: Great View, Romantic Cons: No Bathrooms! more

Super 8/27/2002

We take this monument to engineering for granted, but what a marvel it is, not to mention the views up and down the East River from the bridge. Plus walking across is good excercise. more

A New York Treasure 8/15/2002

Walking across the Brooklyn Bridge is one of the best ways to experience New York City. Not only is the bridge itself breathtaking to look at with it's gothic arches, but the views of upper and lower Manhattan, the harbor and the boats down below are, simultaneously, spectacular! And the bridge is a wonderful way to experience how many New Yorkers get around. It doesn't cost anything, you don't have to wait an hour in line, and it connects two great boroughs with many other attractions to see. Pros: Historical, Free, Spectacular views Cons: No restrooms, go before you cross more

Hidden Beauty 7/26/2002

When people think of NYC, fast cars, smog, and towers skyscrapers come to mind. What people usually don't take time to see is the treasure dangling off of the lower east side of the island-- Roebling's masterpiece, the Brooklyn Bridge. With a beautiful boardwalk in the center designed for pediestrian use (toll free,) the bridge is a lovely, airy respite from the claustrophobia and linearity of the city and offers gorgeous views of the harbor, the manhattan skyline, and at the foot of the Brooklyn end, the perfect pizza slice at Patsy's. Pros: Free, breathtakingbeauty, accessible Cons: doesn't entertai kids more

No Place Like Home 7/26/2002

The Brooklyn Bridge, whether you are walking across it just for the sheer pleasure or admiring it while the sunsets from Brooklyn Heights, is one of the purest forms of beauty. There is nothing that says home more than glimpsing this wonder on a long drive back to Brooklyn. more

Eighth Great Wonder 6/5/2002

It's so hackneyed that you'd almost forget, but the Brooklyn Bridge truly is something to marvel at, and nothing brings that fact closer to home than a night-view from the FDR or the BQE -- or a walk across the masterpiece. Functional and beautiful, it's more than a landmark, it's loved by Manhattanites and Brooklyners alike. A great walk when the weather's pleasant. more

I love this bridge 6/3/2002

One of my favorite summer rituals is to walk from my office in the West Village, over the bridge and all the way home, timing it so I'm crossing the bridge just in time for sunset. The sky, the water, the Manhattan skyline are all breathtaking. A great excursion for visitors and natives alike is to walk over the bridge, go for pizza at Grimaldi's, and then stroll over to the promenade to admire the skyline in its full glory. Pros: Great view Cons: Crowded more
