The Bookworm, West hartford 12/6/2009

I was surprised to see a negative review, because I have always found the people at Bookworm to be very helpful about getting me all sorts of books! Maybe it was an off day for the salesperson that day.... more

Exceedingly Poor Customer Service 11/30/2009

I called Bookworm asking for a book on an artist, and the woman who answered said she did not have the author listed. I then clarified that the person I identified was the artist, not the author. She corrected herself and indicated there were no books in print. Which was completely fine, but then when I told her I saw books at Borders an B&N, she replied "good for you." I explained to her I was merely seeking clarification as to whether she meant "the store had no books on the author" OR she was under the impression there were no books on the artist. Her attitude and tone continued to decline. more

Wonderful local store 9/21/2009

Wonderful store, great selections, helpful staff and they showcase local artists whose work is on display and for sale. It's the corner store, done right. more

Awful, awful 8/8/2009

I can't quite believe some of the positive reviews here; have any of these people ever been to authentic, well-stocked, aesthetically pleasing locally run book stores with friendly staff? Bookworm, unfortunately, feels like a typical CT book store: it lacks any sort of funky feel and offers a very limited selection. Absolutely no ambience, which is only worsened by the rude staff who post signs protesting food and phones. A book store should be welcoming and a relaxing place to visit. How does this place still exist? I love soliciting local shops, but honestly I'd defect to Borders over this place. Take a drive to R.Julia books in Madison or any number of book stores in New Haven. more

Wonderful Part of a Great Downtown 2/2/2009

We stumbled across this store the other day, and I'm so glad we did! Friendly staff, great layout, thoughtful selection. It was a warm, wonderful place to browse books and periodicals. I highly recommend it. more

A Wonderful Place 9/29/2007

The Bookworm is a terrific store. The staff is helpful. The merchandise is rich and varied -- and fit to the community while the big boxes have squeezed out so many titles found at Bookworm. This is a great service station to people who like to read. more

Rude owner, limited selection, poor quality 3/16/2007

Bookworm has an okay selection if your tastes are limited to literary fiction and children's books. Otherwise the selection is very poor. For example, the science section is limited to one sparse shelf. The quality of the merchandise is atrocious. Of the ten or so science books I saw, I might have bought four, but three were bent, scuffed up or worn-looking. This is especially ironic given the owner's strict rules, there are signs posted instructing customers not to allow children under six to handle books, not to bring ice cream into the store, etc. I eventually bought "The Planets" by Dava Sobel, only to find out later that I could have bought it for half the price at Barnes and Noble. I returned to the store the next week and read quietly in the back for a few minutes while waiting for an appointment. I was told in no uncertain terms by the owner to pay for the book or leave, reading was prohibited. I love independent bookstores, but if the owner is going to make my experience unpleasant, I'd prefer to shop online or at a large chain, where I can find lower prices and a better selection. more

Local Bookstore 8/21/2005

Bookwork is a local bookstore in west hartford center for the whole family. They have a large selection of childrens books and also carry all the big hits for the adults. Reasonable prices for a smaller bookstore and they have good sales. Great place to get a book then grab a coffee in the center. more

Great small business store 8/20/2005

Great little bookstore with a surprsingly large selection and inventory. A good place to shop to support a local business. Usually gets pretty famous authors to appear for book signings and many Connecticut authors often featured. Conviently located in West Hartford Center near many great other stores. Friendly and helpful staff will order anything your heart desires. If you need a book, make it bookworm! more

Independent Book Store 8/15/2005

A great independent bookstore that caters to the “literary fiction” crowd – i.e. no Danielle Steele here. The workers let you browse to your hearts content, and will even special order something if you can’t find it in store (which is rare)! The people who work here actually read, and are always ready with a great recommendation. more
