Bookends in Kailua 9/26/2008

I love this little store, floor to ceiling stacked with new and used books. When looking for a specific, mainstream, new release, I generally go to one of the big chains like Border's, but if I am looking for something off-beat, I am off to Bookends in a flash. When my son was doing a report on Samoa, I was able to find a used paperback out-of-print edition of an account written by a nineteenth century missionary. When my daughter was studying the Supreme Court, I was able to find an obscure account of politics at that level. The staff are extremely helpful, and it is fun just to sit on the floor and browse. more

Searching for treasure 11/26/2005

Bookends in the Kailua Shopping Center is one of the few independent bookstores remaining. Although it has neither the physical size nor the selection of the national chains, the book-loving staff are more than willing to help you find what you're looking for. Both new and used books are mixed on the shelves, and quite a bit of inventory is stacked in the narrow aisles. Prices are basically retail for new books and varies on the used books depending on condition. Parking can get tight in the shopping center's lot but a stall can eventually be found as long as you're patient. more

Charming neighborhood bookstore 11/9/2005

As a book lover, I consider Bookends a place I could spend hours and really lose myself in. Unlike the big-name retail book/music stores with cafes, Bookends carries both new and used titles and has that familiar neighborhood feel to it. Yes, you can peruse dog-eared copies and never-before-owned books all in one place. Books are found not only on shelves, but in stacks on floors and on tables throughout the store. Organization is not the greatest (however most books are categorized) but the fun part is sifting through the titles and discovering works you'd never heard of before. Bookends offers mainstream to offbeat and everything in between. more
