Editorial review from Citysearch 2/27/2013

My three year old healthy mini schnauzer was sick last week. Wouldn't come out of his crate. Took him on Tuesday to my local vet All Pets Health in Spring Hill, TN b/c he was definitely not himself. I was told his platelet count was around 78,000 which was a little low considering normal ranges are around 200,000. They prescribed Prednisone, a muscle relaxer and a pain med b/c they also said he had back pain. Two days on the meds, my pup wouldn't eat.\r \r They ran tests again on him on Friday and saw his platelet count had increased 10,000. Saturday he still wasn't eating so we made him some fresh chicken and rice. He did eat some chicken but threw it up multiple times during the evening and had bloody stool.\r \r On Sunday morning, he was again not wanting to get up and I had to drag him out of the crate to go to the bathroom. He still wouldn't eat and still had bloody stool. I decided to take him to Blue Pearl. They immediately put him on fluids and an antibiotic. At this point, I still had no idea what was wrong with my dog. Were these side effects from the medication or was it a fluke that we stumbled upon his low platelets from running blood work? They called their internal medicine vet and he basically told us we had to spend up to $3,000 to run more test to establish what was wrong with our pet. Meanwhile he was declining.\r \r Two days later, $2,000 later, basically Blue Pearl told me that I should put down my 3 year old puppy who had never had any health issues. Very disturbed and upset I spoke with my father who mentioned I should contact his vet. I did that immediately and was told to transfer my pup over to Dr. Fly at the Nolensville Animal Hospital in Nolensville, TN. I did that and 2 days later and only $700, my pup is eating again, blood work is gradually increasing back to normal levels and he is feeling more like his old self again. Please, please take my advice and seek second opinions b/c it felt like if you didn't have thousands of dollars to throw at Blue Pearl, then there recommendation is just to put your loved one down.\r more

AVOID DR HOLSTIE (internist) 4/25/2012

I was referred to Dr. Holstie to look take on the specialized care after moving here from out of town. I found her somewhat indifferent during my first visit. She seemed more interested in speaking with me about flying to ""Palm Beach"", as she called it, Melbourne, FL to ride her horse every weekend, and how she had founded the practice and sold to the chain blue pearl, than she did discussing my dogs history or treatment plan. On my fourth visit, I was kept waiting for over an hour to discuss my pet's test results and have a bp reading. After speaking with the Director, I finally was brought in to see her. She was hostile, condescending, wouldn't listen to my questions (after I listened to her for 15 minutes, in which she called me cheap, and told me flat out that she was ""here to make money""). Keep in mind that all I had done in 4 visits is 1 blood pressure, one echogram on and a prescription. Over $1000.00 in 3 visits. She was referring my being cheap, because I had a test performed at my vet (which I was told to do if it was more convenient, closer to my house... because it had to be performed at a point in the future. The tests were sent to, and by her own acknowledgement, received by her. She said ""she didn't look at it"". Further she stated ""If I looked over all test results that are sent to me directly"" ""I would not have time to see paying patients"". OK, if I were there for charity or a free consultation I could understand. But as an established patient, providing her with ALL records from 11 years, and it being my FOURTH appointment, I felt as though she should at least be curious or willing to look at the tests. This was a simple blood panel... She stated ""My patients need to pay for the test here and pay me to review it. The test was performed by the vet who REFERRED me to her. I was treated like I was a deadbeat, keep in mind she was always paid in full after every visit. Clearly her Oath means nothing. I have never experienced such an offensive uncaring health provider.I did not know that pigs rode horses. more
