not the best in the area... 9/29/2006

i go to austin a lot and i always drive down to smitty's in lockhart to eat and also to bring back a few pounds of brisket and sausages to LA. we went to black's one night because we got a late start smitty's and kreuz were already closed. anyway, the people who work there were pretty nice and easygoing, but the brisket and ribs weren't anywhere near what i was expecting. brisket was a little dry and plain and the ribs were tougher than i expected. smitty's is the best in town (and anywhere else) and kreuz is a close second. i would put blacks at a distant third... more

Brisket to die for... 7/7/2003

Damn good Texas BBQ in the the BBQ Capitol of Texas, Lockhart!!!! I love this place, and even though I live in Los Angeles, CA, I dine here whenever I am in the Austin, TX area. The smoke flavor on the meats is awesome!! Why can't we do this kinda BBQ in California??? Pros: Great BBQ, Tender smoked meats, Historic place Cons: Far from Austin, TX more

OK, but there are better 10/11/2002

A lot of people have recommended this place to me, but most of those people were from out of town and would come there out of habit. Having been to most of the other BBQs in the area, Black's rates as one of the better ones, but far down the list from the top. It is definitely over-rated and over-advertised. The food is very good, but the layout of the restaurant is awkward; you have to put all the accessories on your plate before you get to the main course. This tends to back the food line up. The dining area is also dark, as if it was intended for you to not see what you're eating. This place hasn't made any improvements to keep pace with the times, and it shows. more

Owner Message
  • There is something timeless about the feel of this relaxed cafe with Texas license plates lining one wood wall and Longhorn horns decorating the others.

No wonder: It has been run by the same family since 1932.

Owner Edgar Black, the son of the founder, still does things the way Daddy did, using post oak to indirectly smoke the meat, which is seasoned only with salt and pepper. The moist, deep-flavored brisket cooks for 24 hours, the good beef-and-pork sausage is homemade. Hammy pork ribs, chicken redolent of smoke. Made-from-scratch sauce is thick, red and sweet. Sides are numerous.
