Pretty Good 11/4/2009

I have had sushi in many different restaurants. But I thought that this place deserves special notice. The nice thing about their menu is that they have a wide variety of items, even for people who don't particularly like raw fish. Their spider roll is incredible. I get it every time I go there. I even took my mom here. She's never had sushi before, and she liked the place. I took both my bridesmaids here for lunch, both of which love sushi. And they both said that the fish quality excellent and that the portions are nice for the price. Pros: Fresh Fish, Something for everyone Cons: They don't serve coke, only Pepsi more

Unfresh Fish 9/4/2009

I should have read the Yelp reviews before going here because somebody said they found a worm in their edamame. I believe it because I had a really bad case of food poysoning within hours after the restaurant. I hope I can save somebody else from getting sick also. Thanks. Pros: Recommend to people you don't like Cons: Food poysoning more

I loved it! 8/30/2009

My boyfriend and I loved this restaurant. The food was good and the prices were great! We will be returning! =) Pros: Good food, Good prices more

Good food. Great happy hour. So-so service. 5/26/2009

They need to realize that they would do better by treating their non-chef staff better and keeping one or two bartenders for a long time as folks who chill out at the bar and come for happy hour like to have the same bartender. Lately changing staff too frequently. However, we love their happy hour M-F 4-7pm (see you then and there) and love their sushi. Have not tried entrees yet. Decent cocktails. Lots of variety of sake. Try the specialty sushi rolls (not discounted during happy hour). Love their Spicy Tuna rolls and Seared Tuna Sashimi and Baked Lobster & Maki Rolls. Enjoy!!! :) Pros: Great Sushi. Awesome Happy Hour M-F 4-7. Cons: So-so service (high turnover of staff, bartender). more

HORRIBLE!~ 5/14/2009

have gone to this place for a year and in the beginning it was great. The sushi IS BAD! REALLY LOW QUALITY FISH! The staff is rude and they don't seem to care. It was a special night tonight for my husband and I so we thought we would try this place one more time. We get there and they gave away our reservation, the girl was snotty and thinking she was so funny made her snide comments and either the manager or the owner just kept saying sorry and did nothing to correct the service. We ended up going to BANZAI in CALABASAS, they had a nice table waiting for us and the sushi is 10 times better and in a nicer location. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME AT BISTRO KA THEY SERVE BAD SUSHI! more

Great Atmosphere with less than desired Service 7/14/2008

Went there a few times during lunch (great value). We love the decor of the restaurant; very trendy and upscale. The bento lunch special are a great value; $13 for the three item combo. However, SERVICE needs signficant improvement. The last time we were there, a party of 5, food came out for one of the five of us (and it was all the course, salad, entree and rolls on three separate LARGE plates) without the bowl of rice. I would of expect the salad to be served first, then the entree along with our four bento box orders. I've made complaint to the supervisor, but nothing was done to better the service. I would go there again because the decor/atmosphere and the lunch specials are great value. Pros: Ambience and decor, comfortable and sensory pleasant Cons: POOR Service more

topanga mall's hidden gem 12/23/2007

Was at the Topanga Mall doing my holiday shopping and after a few hours of waiting in long lines for so so deals, I got hungry. My girl and made our way to the packed food court and we noticed a sign near the restroom that said Sushi and cocktails. That was just what we needed. The sign said across from Target so we made our way there and tucked in a corner near the parking garage was Bistro Ka. When we first walked in we were greeted by a bartender. Turns out the entrance from inside the mall takes you right into the bar (sweet!). The hostess asked us if wanted to sit at the sushi bar or table but it turned out that there was happy hour in the bar and lounge so thats where we sat. We took a table in the corner of the lounge and it was comfortable and cozy. There was even a lit candle in the middle of our table which was a nice touch. The bartender Johnny is quite a character. He was super friendly and informative and made my girl and I laugh with his comments and jokes. Our food was amazing. We tried the crab cakes which were only $5 bucks for happy hour along with a snowcrab special soy paper roll thing that Johnny recommended...delicious!. My girl had the pomegranate julep which I had the phantom margarita, both were from their specialty cocktail list. After about an hour into our meal and drinks we forgot that we were at the mall shopping as it felt like we were eating sushi in Hollywood. I will def come back to this place and next time I'll probably check out the sushi bar and do sake bombs with the chefs. Pros: friendly staff, cool ambience, unique drinks Cons: cant think of any more

Best Sushi place in town!!! 11/26/2007

I've been there couple times. And they were great! I love all the rolls they got. My favorite ones are ""Oceanite roll and Cucumber tuna maki"". They are to die for!!!!! Yummmmm. Also the service was great too. They were very polite and helpful. Can't wait to go back!!! Pros: Beautiful decor, yummy rolls and great service!!! more

Don't bother going 10/13/2007

I generally don't like to write scathing restaurant reviews-- but my experience at Bistro Ka tonight was so lackluster I feel the need to warn others. It's true the restaurant has beautiful modern decor and a seemingly well designed space. This, however, does not make up for the mediocre food and complete breakdown of their service routines. While waiting for our table, my boyfriend and I headed to the bar for some drinks. Not only did the bartender never approach us, but he was busy regaling his new best friends at the other end of the bar with stories of his ""fresh-squeezed lime juice made from limes."" He also seemed to fling liquor about like it was confetti, sloshing it all over the place. The couple next to us received their drinks about fifteen minutes apart from each other. (They ordered the exact same drink at the same time.) After we were finally seated, no wait staff approached us for another fifteen minutes. I know this because we had been timing our stay, and we were on the verge of walking out. Our waitress finally appeared flustered and out of breath. She took our order, and for the rest of the dinner, we were served by a variety of the restaurant staff from busboys to each of the two hostesses in turn. I've never seen such chaos. The food itself was mediocre. Our carpaccio medley with tuna, salmon, and white tuna arrived without the promised ponzu dressing. The waitress hurried up to our table with a squeeze bottle in hand to fix it. All the meats we ordered were under-seasoned. At least our baked lobster sushi roll was decent, but i did notice the imitation crab filling was strangley reminiscent of the bulk sushi you get at Costco. Maybe Bistro Ka would be a great place to stop by for a drink on some festive weekend, but that's only if you can get a drink at all. Otherwise, save your time and money and go to a real restaurant. Pros: Nice atmosphere Cons: mediocre food, bad service more

Very Inconsistent, Be Warned. 10/2/2007

I just wanted to write a very honest Review of Ka here. I've been there 3 times now with my friends, and twice, my rolls have not come out looking the same as the time before when I ordered them; I guess it was because a different Sushi chef made them all 3 times. The service that I received was also lackluster and left me thinking that the morale must be low there. I did want to give the place a very ""fair shake"" and come back and try different items on the Menu just to see if the place was worth it because it's so pretty inside and it has a full Bar...but since it's the Valley and I have so many other Sushi options, I think I'll stick to places like Sabune and Cho Cho San. Pros: Decor, Full Bar, Location Cons: Inconsistency in Menu Items, Lackluster Service, Unimpressive Rolls more

Best Deal in town 9/3/2007

Don't be scared by the elegant decor of this restaurant. Once you look at the menu and food you will be amazed at how affordable this place really is. Finding this place a lil tricky but once you make your way in, you won't forget how to get there again. Parking is great (odd for a sushi place), because its located at the Westfield Topanga Mall. If you're looking for a traditional Japanese Sushi Bar, go to Ventura Blvd or Studio City. Don't get it twisted, they have a full sushi bar, but its their fresh take on Japanese and Western fusion that got me hooked. I've never been to a Japenese restaurant and ordered entrees until I came here. Their half roasted chicken is delicious. Gotta try the kabocha puree (served as a side with some entrees). more
