Bistro 1888

This is a great restaurant. Service, wine desserts were really good. But the Etouffee had no spark at all to it. I love Efouffee and when my date and I saw it on the menu, we both ordered it. It was just bland. I would certainly visit again as this is the first time in many visits that I was not really totally happy with the food. Go. Just don't order what I did ! BTW both our deserts were excellent. more

Bistro 1888 is a real gem! This award winning restaurant is located in a small town in Southern Virginia but don't let the location fool you... this restaurant could hold it's own in ANY big city. I grew up in Chicago and I've dined in the top rated restaurants in the US including Charlie Trotter's and the food in this establishment surpassed anything I've experienced before. I begin with an Arulgula, Potato and Kalamata Olive Salad which can only be described as divine. My husband enjoyed Calamari which was served with an Asian dipping sauce. He said it was by far the best he had ever had. The very very extensive menu made our entree selections a little difficult. My husband ordered the Paris Filet (filet being a someone safe bet in most restaurants) but I decided to be daring and selected the Hawaiian Sea Bass. Both of our meals were cooked to perfection and my sea bass melted in my mouth. The wonderful flavors didn't end here. For dessert we shared the Bread Pudding AND Creme Brulee... Both were to die for! The Bistro is located in a beautifully restored Historic building and the atmosphere is warm and inviting. The only negative of the entire evening was that we had to wait a long time to be seated after driving over an hour for our reservation. This restaurant doesn't seem to lack from any business. We inquired about all the business from such a small town and our server said that over 70% of the restaurants business comes from out of the area. We can definitely understand why that is. after hearing reviews, we tried it while traveling through. this place is trying to be upscale/modern in a sleepy old town. food and ambiance is VERY well prepared. the staff maintains good professionalism, but i don't agree with other review that they could make it with NYC. the staff got very tense and worked slow when it was busy. the appitizers were wonderful tasting, but very small amount for such a heavy price. overall, decent place, but probably would not return. 'Great fresh food served with panache' is what the Baltimore Sun (5/03) wrote about Bistro 1888, and it is very true. The chef and co-owner Margaret Moorefield is a culinary genius. All 24 entrees, 12 appetizers, soups, salads, desserts and nightly specials are wonderfully presented and excellent in freshness, quality and taste. The Bistro has received the Wine Spectator's Award of Excellent and AAA 3 Diamond rating and are to be written up in Southern Living in May of 2006.
