I've had foot problems which have forced me to get new footwear. When I was a teen, I tried a pair of Birkenstocks but returned them because of the pain - and the fear that I wouldn't be able to return them if I wore them too long. I have a high instep, and went to try on shoes at the local shoe store. I could only get my feet into Birkenstocks and Haflinger's, and I chose between the taupe Birkenstocks - soft footbed and regular. The same color was different based on whether or not it was the soft footbed, and I chose the soft because it had a sage green tone rather than a rosier golden tan tone. It took 3 weeks to break these in. The strap nearest the ankle dug into me with every step I took, because of my instep. It hurt and caused bleeding under the skin, but I persisted in wearing them a couple of hours at a time. Normally, I go barefoot inside because I can't stand shoes and don't even like sandals much, but I now do not want to take off my Birkenstocks! I love them. I asked the salesman if the straps would stretch, and he said they would stretch to a point, and especially if fastened too tight. I had been wearing them kinda loosely, but I prefer them snug enough to stay on - not tight. Hopefully they won't stretch too much. The straps and the durability of the sole are what led to my review's title, as I don't know the answers to those questions now. I have ordered a pair in the Boston style as well. Sandals4less's softbed Boston in mocha looks great to me, and different from the same color in the regular footbed. If this love lasts, I will have little use for any other shoe. I will give another review later. The way the insole conforms to my foot makes these feel like they are a part of me, which is why they can feel better than barefoot.
