Big City Diner - Small town atmosphere 4/3/2006

The last time I went to Big City Diner on Waialae Avenue in Kaimuki, it was, unfortunately, a take out order (a "working dinner"). Why is that unfortunate? Because I didn’t get to enjoy my meal with the "diner ambiance" that Big City is known for. The generously sized hamburger I ordered was still very good, as usual, and the french fries were still hot when I took it back to the location I was working at (which was, fortunately, right across the street). Prices are reasonable (we're talking around a Zippy's range here) for the what you're getting and major credit cards are accepted. The only downside is that the meals are cooked to order, so if you’re looking for fast-food-speed, head down the street to McDonalds instead. more

I liked it here 3/21/2006

Its a rather ordinary place and deosn't have anything that makes me really excited but the food was good. There were a lot of TVs and it looked good as a sports bar. The service was ordinary and the people were relatively nice and pleasant. Everything had a very plain old ordinary feeling and there was nothing entirely special about this place. Its nice for a casual lunch if you're not looking for anything special. more

Great Family and Friend Place 12/1/2005

I started going to Big City when they first opened its doors on Waialae. Like Cafe Lauffer (see other post) I used to go there often. My favorite right away was the calamari strips. It is served with a wasabi aioli sauce. Their menu items have a lot traditional fares but with a twist. I've tried their salmon salad, calamari steak, steak, other salads, etc. I don't think there was anything I didn't like although some were better than others. The kids menu is great too. My son loved it. Their desserts are nice too but usually you're too full to have any. Their burgers are good but I don't find them especially special. They are big though. If you eat too many items, be careful for sensory overload. I think it is best to order 1 - 2 items and savor them (appetizer and dinner). We made the mistake of trying each others' foods and you end up with a confused taste palate! It's always a lot of fun with friends and interesting enough to keep your kids occupied too. more

Good place to eat pupus and watch sports 10/5/2005

I had lunch there the other day and the potato cream chowder was the best I ever had. I also tried their Kim Chee Fried Rice before and it's so good although the menu is a little pricey. Their poke is ono but the portion is not that big. Big City Dinner seems to be a family oriented restaurant but they also have good draft beers and a big TV to watch sports. I'm glad to see this restaurant growing bigger and opening more locations. more

Great Casual Atmosphere 9/14/2005

At Big City Diner you can have a delicious meal while listening to old time music. This diner turns out super pupus such calamari tempura strips, boiled soybeans with Hawaiian spicy sauce, and spicy garlic fries. Other pupu treats include flame-broiled New York steak bites, chilled tofu and kim chee. They serve salads, burgers, sanwiches and local entrees for dinner. The wonderful smells of this Diner will lure you in and their reasonable prices will keep you coming back for more. more

Big Breakfast 8/19/2005

If you’re really feeling hungry and looking for a place that serves some really great breakfast dishes I highly recommend that you check out Big City Diners. I’ve been there a few times for breakfast they have a huge selection of breakfast meals. The portions that they give are huge. I ordered a full order of their cinnamon apple pancakes. They were very good but I could barely half of it. Their famous kim chee fried rice is quite good and can be ordered at all times of the day. You should also try their guava baby back ribs and garlic fires when you’re there. Meals range from $6-$20. more
