Berlin Inn Restaurant & Bakery

Wanted to support a local independent cafe for a Sunday breakfast. Our first visit to Berlin Inn was disappointing enough to be the only time that we will ever go there. We ordered two of the most basic offerings that should be easily prepared well by most anyone wearing an apron. The ham and cheese omelette was so overdone throughout that it seemed to have spent about 20 minutes in a hot oven prior to being served. Same goes for the eggs on the other plate. The potato pancakes were hard and dark on the outside, wet and disintegrated on the inside. devoid of flavor except for the greasy film which rose with each attempt to cut off a bite. Having recently moved to the Brooklyn neighborhood in Portland, we decided to try this nearby restaurant for a late breakfast. What a disappointment! The omelet was overcooked and too brown on the outside. The potato pancakes my were crispy but greasy and bland. And they charged $2 for a side of sour cream which consisted of a small dollop in a tiny cup. When we questioned this charge, the manager refused to remove or reduce it and was unfriendly to us as we were leaving. We were taken aback at the un-Portland-like attitude and will not be going back. more

I've been here about 5 times in the past couple years and always have a great meal. The staff (expecially the one with tattoos) are friendly and know the food well. Fondue and dessert are the best things and the main course is usually really good too. Prices are reasonable. more

This little cozy restaurant has amazingly authentic german cuisine. My boyfriend enjoyed a few delicious dark beers, a unique baked kale salad, and a cheese fondue that didn't have that overwhelming wine taste you find at other german places that shall remain nameless. The service was perfect. Our tattooed server checked on us, refilled our water, but let us enjoy our meal without making us feel like she was working a tip. We will happily go back and look forward to the patio opening in the summer more

After reading all the great reviews, and being a lover of German food, I was excited to eat at the Berlin Inn. The evening began with a great selection of German beers but sadly that was where the meal peaked. The food was sub-par, service was good, and atmosphere enjoyable. If you are looking for a place that has an authentic German menu and cozy comfortable dining room, but poor quality food, this is the place for you. Being that there are few German restaurants in Portland I am not surprised people speak highly of the Berlin Inn, but if this place was actually in Germany, it would be out of business within days. I was very sorry to read the review before mine, because this place has always been fantastic. What an unfortunate experience!! The staff that work there are fabulous people who really, really care about you ~ usually leading to very positive, energizing, lovely and interesting conversations. A staff member who does anything less at this place is an odd member, I'm sure... Sometimes the ""family style"" and very personalized manner of service can slow things down - which could be frustrating to some - but it doesn't hurt anything. Their desserts are amazing and the lady who cooks them is effing adorable. Everything I've eaten from that place has been fabulous. This was our first time at Berlin Inn. The dinner was very good although you had to pay extra for bread (2 rolls for $2.50?!) which seemed odd BUT, the rolls were delicious. The only real problem we had was with the waitress- she was HORRIBLE! First, she came to our table briefly, slowly walking by it saying ""you didn't want anything to drink, do you?"" What?? Of course we would like something to drink! So when we said that yes, actually, we would like something to drink, she backed up and took our drink orders. Then we ordered the rolls and she drops them off but immediately leaves. Well, the rolls were hot and we wanted to put butter on them but we had no silverware! So, we waited patiently for her to check on us but no. My husband tried to break the bread in half but it was so hot he couldn't. When she dropped off our food, we asked for silverware and she didn't even apologize (as our rolls sat uneaten and now cold). Once she dropped the food off, she never came back by. Halfway through the meal, we finished our drinks and needed water or something. I finally had to go up to the bar and ask one of the waitress for some water! Then she drops off the check and we said we actually wanted to see the dessert plate/menu. So she got it and went through all the desserts and we ordered one. THen we heard a different waitress going through the desserts with another table and the ingredients in a few of them were completely different than what our waitress had told us! I am not sure who was wrong but I guess our waitress since she said the cheesecake was made with coconut meat - the other waitress had said it was soaked cashews with agave juice, which sounded like what I remembered from the menu. Another waitress cleared our table for us (our waitress was standing around in the bar doing nothing- I could see her!) and yet another waitress picked up our check (again, our waitress stood around). We chose to have dinner at the Berlin Inn prior to seeing Cold B lood at the Aladdin. What a great surprise to our taste buds!! Being raised with a German grandfather I have eaten wonderful German food growing up and I was so happy to find a truly authentic German restaraunt!! The staff was knowledgable about the food, the beer (extensive choses) and the wine (also extensive). The saurbraten was fork tender and delicious!! We will definitely go again and again!! One of the great German places in the Northwest. Fresh baked bread starts off the experience. I'm not normally a fan of fondues, but they were very tasty, using only the best cheeses - many places skimp on this and it leads to the horrible taste I'd always associated with it. ...at least on friday or sat nights or sunday brunches - sometimes you luck out but sometimes they are packed full! But they gladly take reservations & its rare for your table not to be ready on time even when people are waiting outside the door. Went to the Berlin Inn Restaurant last night for dinner, the place was fantastic! What a nice cozy place to have dinner, it was like dining at home with full service! The food was better than any other German place here in Portland. It was nice to have a selection of different Fondues. Everything, including the desserts, are hand made on location, the owner even grows some of her own vegetables. The wait staff was fantastic, prompt and very knowledgeable of the menu items, the wine list and their extensive beer selection. It's small, so I'd recommend reservations, although it was not full on Saturday night. I'm going to have to say Bye Bye to The Rheinlander and Gustav's, the Berlin Inn Restaurant is far superior. Best German food in Portland. When you go I recommend the Sausage, Potatoes, and Sauerkraut dinner. (That's not what it's called but ask for it). Also, if you like beer, the Berlin Inn has some of the best beer I've had in Portland. The waiters and waitresses are friendly and more than happy to make a recommendation. When it comes to breakfast the Berlin Inn is delicious and very reasonably priced. Try the beer battered blueberry pancakes. The ambiance is nice. It makes you feel like you're in a small restaurant in Germany. It's small and can get busy so it's best to make a reservation. The prices at the Berlin Inn are all over the board. You could leave full and satisfied and sped $10. per person including beer. Or you could leave very full and satisfied spending $40 per person including beer, fondue, and desert. AMBIENCE and SERVICE: The converted house that is this German grub jewel sticks out in the area. Outside, a small deck/patio is surrounded by plants and flowers, giving it a slight european feel. Inside, the German decor feels Hansel and Gretel-esque as it is cozy and quaint. At the table a friend and I had, there was a view of Mt. I've eaten at all of the local German places and this is BY FAR the best food around. Other places may be less expensive, but sometimes...ya get what ya pay for. I'd much rather spend an extra $10 or so and have excellent food. I've NEVER gotten cold food there as someone else's review stated and I've been a loyal customer there for 9 years. So go! And enjoy! After having read the rave reviews for the Berlin Inn, I was looking forward to our dinner. We found the food to be quite mediocre and extremeley expensive for PDX. The portions were small and the food arrived cold. We've had much better German food at other places, and we definitely will not return to the Berlin Inn. region for four years and fell in love with the requisite Konig Ludwig Hefeweizen, red cabbage, weinerschnitzels and potato pancakes. Berlin Inn will not disappoint, as all of the above plus smoked salmon potato cakes, marinated cucumbers, smoked wurst, and almond tart were excellent. The atmosphere and food transported us back to Deutschland and we are eager to return to BI to sample the beef rouladen, kase spaetzle, and strudels. And the icing?
