The Bay Bridge is still one of my favorite things about the Bay Area. After living here for 8 years, it is still so fine when I cruise back to town in my Red '63 Buick Riviera or blasting into The City on my motorcycle. Seeing the ships and the TransAmerica building and the hills of San Francisco lets me know that I'm home, and I'll be in the Mission at my house soon. Coming back home across the bridge in the fog is one of the best experiences, and crossing on a sunny day lends such a feeling as you glide under the triple XXX's. It always seems different. Do you think that the architect would have any idea the feeling he would elicit with his creation? So here's to you my under appreciated friend as I vote for you as one of the best things about San Francisco. Pros: TTRAFFIC so you can, relish the view Cons: TRAFFIC! more

  • In Short
It cost the city $77 million to construct this landmark in 1936. Currently, an estimated 270,000 vehicles make the four-and-a-half-mile trek across the ten-lane highway daily (located along Interstate 80). At its highest point, the suspension bridge stands 526 feet above sea level; its deepest pier runs more than 240 feet below the bay waters. A $3 toll charge is applied to passengers traveling westward into San Francisco.
