Don't go here hungry! 1/24/2011

Excellent food but VERY small portions and VERY expensive. My wife and I are not big eaters and are not very large people. We heard about how great the food was and thought we would try it. The main course was four bites! It was good but definitely not worth the over $200 bill for two people. We left hungry and had to stop at In & Out burgers for a double double on the way home. We are glad we tried it but never again. more

REALLY GREAT food, intimate setting 5/19/2008

So I'm always reading reviews but never written one before, so I really wanted to say something about this place, seeing that it's still pretty new and not a lot of people have heard about it. First of all, the food is SO AMAZING, we got the 7 course menu and everything that came out was truly unique and soo flavorful. I've been to a lot of nice restaurants, but the food at Bashan really stands above the rest in quality, creativity, and most importantly, taste!! I loved the braised short ribs and the desserts were awesome, especially the banana cake with peanut butter toffee. The ambiance is really great as well-- the staff was extremely courteous, attentive and just very personable in general... we also got to meet the chefs, who were really laid-back and friendly, so that was cool. I would say this place would be perfect for a date or special occasion to take someone you care about b/c you truly get the full experience of fine dining, with top-notch food and a great atmospere-- without the frou-frou pretentious feel that often comes with other restaurants. \r \r DEFINITELY RECOMMEND IT! Pros: unique food that is just SO GOOD Cons: somewhat obscure location more

Hidden Gem!!! 5/4/2008

Wow I had no idea Montrose was stepping it up a notch, this restaurant rocks! The place is perfect for meeting with friends or having a little one on one time, wink wink nudge nudge. But best of all the food is outstanding!! Every plate my friend and I had was beautifully presented and the taste sent me to new heights. The wine list is small but full of boutique wines that are hard to find. The service was smooth and welcoming. Better try this soon before the Hollywood peeps find it. Pros: Food, service romantic more

Best rip off in the area 4/11/2008

Here is an ambitious chef way over his head. The restaurant presents itself as a fine and somewhat sophisticated eatery, and so look the dishes, extremely minimal, nicely presented and expensive. Unfortunately the food does not match the pretentious appearance. The ""burrata and bresaola salad"" (appetizer) came as a small ball of burrata, that tasted more like old mozzarella di bufala than burrata, wrapped in 2 super thin slices of bresaola on an ambiguous salad with dates, endive and parsnips($15). As main corse I had the steelhead (a salmonoid trout) , seared as anybody could sear in a non-stick pan, that was dry, over some extremely salty cooked arugula and with a little blob of something vaguely resembling a super runny risotto with pearl onions, sweet potato and dry tomatoes, of ambiguous flavor ($24). The bread was gummy and as a freebie you get a quarter of a teaspoon of chopped olives with one tiny tiny carrot juice (!!). But we did have 2 waitresses waiting on us, which I believe is what you really pay for. The corkage fee is $15. This was a very disappointing dinner: if you want to be fancy then you can't serve this kind of food: Bashan needs to do a lot of work to justify its prices . And it could also learn to use the right amount of salt, as a start. I will never go back. Cons: Small portions, ambiguous flavors, very expensive for what you get more

Average Bistro, Typical CA Fare 3/8/2008

Predictable and unexciting. You could plop this down in Hollywood, Napa, or Sausalito - stuffy clientele typical of Montrose, a perfect compliment to a typical CA style bistro. Good food, not great. Blah decor, very little unique personality. The duck was delicious, not sure about the accompanying vegetable or creamy sauce. Short ribs were a little dry and underwhelming. Skip the Sangria. Pros: Good meat dishes, out of the way location Cons: Overpriced, boring, lackluster vegetables and soups more

So Delicious, I Almost Cried 2/19/2008

This is my first review online, but I was so inspired by the food I ate tonight, I had to write. I feel torn, because I selfishly wouldn't want this place to become as popular as it deserves to be, because I want to be sure that I can always get a table. Yet, the couple who run this restaurant are so lovely and so freaking talented, that I would be doing them a disservice to not tell everyone I know (and don't know) that they must go there, no matter how long the drive. The FOOD is perfect. The atmosphere is indeed relaxed and nice, comfortable and unpretentious. The service fantastic. To me, though, a restaurant is ALL about the food. And this food delivers. We started with a mushroom ravioli that was soft, smooth, and elegant. Then we treated ourselves to the scallops and sweetbreads. They were each cooked to perfection. The scallops melted in my mouth. I am usually not a fan of sweetbreads, but these changed my mind: soft and so delicious with the sundried tomatoes and red peppers. YUM!! I won't order sweetbreads anywhere but here. Then we enjoyed the beef shortribs with braised apricot and cauliflower puree. The chef's taste is flawless. The flavors were so balanced and yummy. Then, my boyfriend had the much lauded baramundi (laud well deserved!) and I had the duck. I can't think of words scrumptious enough to describe it. It was also perfectly cooked, melted in my mouth rested in celery root puree which was sweet and set off the meat beautifully. I wish I could go back in time and have the first bite again.Despite being full, we had to order dessert. My boyfriend drooled over his chocolate bread pudding, and I was thrilled with my toffee cake, which was like a warm and wonderful banana bread cake in a fabulous toffee sauce. \r Another review said to eat here if you are ever in the area. Don't wait. Put yourself in the area, and you'll find yourself like me: in a pathetic reverie of hyperbole, trying to think of 100 synonyms for ""delicious."" Pros: the food the food the food the food (and everything else) more

AMAZING FOOD!!!! 11/29/2007

Let me start out by saying that the place is very cute and comfortable. You don't get the snobby, uncomfortable feeling you get at most fine dining restaurants. The serves is refreshing, and it looks like they are all happy to be working for the husband and wife owners. \r \r For appetizers I stared off with the kabocha soup and with the rolls was to die for. It was smooth, not rich and spiced properly . The chef balanced out the taste with wonderfully sliced, glazed onion. The main dish I ordered was the baramundi fish, it melted in my mouth. The skin was cooked great, fish wasn't dry at all or over cooked like most places. The moist fish melted right in my mouth with so much flavor. It was absolutely delicious. \r \r I have recommended this place to a lot of me co-workers and friends and they all come back and to tell me what a lovely time they had, and how great the food is. \r \r This is my new little treasure. If you are ever in the area, I would recommend you checking it out. Pros: Service, Food, Parking, Wine, Fantastic more
