Best Steak in Philadelphia 2/20/2012

We recently visited my favorite restaurant of all times. The Barclay Prime is without a doubt, the best steak house you will find in ALL of Philadelphia. My husband & I, along with another couple visited the Barclay last week for Valentines dinner. The Rosemary popovers are always a favorite. Then the shellfish sampler came out, and once again, the oysters were superb! I thought the shrimp (as large as baby lobster tails) were a little tasteless. They were not as juicy/succulent as I remembered in the past. We all had the wedges, and they were okay, nothing very memorible about them. The 2 Bone-in Filets were cooked to perfection, as were the 2 strip steaks. So mouthwatering and flavorful. My favorite thing in the whole place is the truffle whipped potatoes. So, so yummy, as were the asparagus & steamed spinach that we all shared. Too full for desserts. more

Amazing Food, Staff and Atmosphere 3/24/2010

Barclay Prime has never disappointed me! I come back every time I'm in Philly. Everything was great; The Tajima Flat Iron steak was delicious and a great compromise in price if you want the buttery taste and smooth texture of Kobe without the Kobe Filet Price tag. Service was equally amazing, Michelle and her staff are world class...really, I travel the globe and this place is tops. It's worth every penny! Pros: Best Food, Drinks and Service more

one of my favorite places 6/20/2009

very nice place, it's classy and very comfortable . the steak is outstanding, lobster soup is incredible. always look forward to come back to this steakhouse. Pros: great service, nice decor, fabulous food more

Have not found a better restaurant in Philly 5/17/2009

I've been to a lot of places to eat in Philly, and a number of its steakhouses. Barclay is the best, period. Capital comes close, but does not equal it. The 24 oz porterhouse is the best deal on the menu. The Wague/Kobe is good, but in my opinion not worth the added price. Ask if they have any Kobe actually imported from Japan (that's not on the menu), that IS worth the price. Everything else, 5 stars across the board. My only beef (pun intended) with the place is that I can't afford to go there every week! I've been at least a half dozen times and every visit has been top notch. Pros: Porterhouse Cons: can't go there every week. more

what a dissappointment 9/23/2008

oy vay - my father said don't bother, but I had to try it, especially since we had reservations at Table 31 rthe next week. Dad was right. (I just had a great time at Table 31 by the way.) So, I thought I shoud write this. First, I must say, the service was great. I was with a tried & true wine connoisseur & she said the wine list was boring & the usual (same as capital). I thought the cabernet was good. The the appetizers were boring and unfortunately tasteless - I wished they were good, I was paying good money for them. Then the steaks, boring too. And the steak knives....you couldn't cut your throat if you wanted to they were so dull. We split the porterhouse & it iasted like it must've been frozen, watery kind of. We left without getting dessert. We decided to walk it off & go out for some great gelato...somewhere else. Pros: nice couches, cool room, great service Cons: tasteless food more

Everything is top notch. 9/8/2008

This is my anniversary dinner place, and I look forward to it every year. Yes, you will spend a lot of money here, but it is worth it. Pros: Service, Steaks, Ambience, Romantic setting more

great service, great steak 6/17/2008

From the decor to the service to the melt in your mouth steaks and sauces, barclay is outstanding. why go to a chain when you can get great food here. more

I was skeptical, but this place delivers in aces!! 4/20/2008

Ate here last night with my girlfriend. The atmosphere was different from other traditional steak houses (capital grille, Morton's etc) We found the atmosphere inviting and the seating very comfortable and not as loud (music) as some of the other reviews suggest. We were 15 minutes early and were given the option by the hostess to be seated in the dining room or to relax in the lounge with a cocktail. Our waitress was attentive and prompt. Excellent wine by the glass selection (they even have a super tuscan and a bordeaux by the glass). We had the bacon wrapped scallops that rested on fried green tomatoes. This simple sounding starter was cooked to perfection with all ingredients exhibiting their optimal flavour and texture. We both had steak for our entrees. She had the Kobe filet and I had the Kobe strip. While my steak was excellent, her filet was simply one of the most succulent pieces of beef I have ever had. We had truffle whipped potatoes and asparagus as our sides. I highly recommend the potatoes as they have a generous pool of truffle oil with lots of truffle bits atop (if you like truffles, i need not say more). We were quite full but had a relaxed dessert over coffee. We had the deep dish cookie (comprised of chocolate chunk, sugar and oatmeal raisin) with home made vanilla ice cream on top. This was accompanied with a rich chocolate sauce. While we were craving a spoon or two of something sweet, we were unable to exhibit restraint. We took a bit of time, but our waitress was acomodating and did not bring the cheque unit I asked for it after a couple refills of coffee. The cheque was steep but fitting for a dining experience that delivered on multiple levels. The only minor gripe I have with this restaurant is that the dining room is very open (I personally would not chose this as a venue for a romantic celebration) Other than that, I highly recommend this restaurant. Pros: High quality food and service Cons: Very large single dining room is not intimate more

Nothing Special 4/9/2008

Odd 3/18/2008

Barclay Prime can best be described as overrated. I have had a much better meal at a 1/4 of the price. Service was terrible. I have never been to a restaurant where the hostess felt it was a good idea to come to your table and flirt with your date. She came up to our table interrupting our meal, completely ignored me, even had her back facing me the whole time and flirted with my date. I was waiting for her to give him her phone number. It was pretty embarrassing and strange experience. more

Service was terrible 2/26/2008

My husband took me for dinner on saturday night for my birthday. The service was terrible our appetizers arrived before our cocktails did. Our food was good although everything was room temperature nothing was hot. I suspect our dinner sat waiting for our server. Cons: loud, dark , poor service more

A+ 2/15/2008

I went here for Valentine's Day and everything was perfect.. form the steaks to the waitor I couldn't have asked for a better experience and the food was delicious. We also received a complimentary treat as we left. Thoughtful! Pros: food, service more

best steakhouse and wonderfull service 10/24/2007

Last weekend, my wife and I journeyed to Rittenhouse square to dine at Barclay Prime. I consider myself to be a kobe connoisseur and self proclaimed ""foodie"". We were very excited to dine at this particular restuarant because of a bone in kobe steak (which is unheard of in the U.S). The cut of meat was was a 36 ounce Tajima porterhouse offered at $245. Me and my wife split some wonderfull appetizers and salads. Then we embarked upon this porterhouse as well a butter poached lobster. The porterhouse was so tender and buttery, we were in steak heaven. To top it all off the service was stellar, our server was the best I've ever encountered , so knowledgeable and funny. I've dined at steakhouses all over the country (wolfgangs place, craft steaks, peter lugers, charlie trotters joint) and none of them were comparible to the all around service and food at Barclay Prime. Great job folks! Pros: service, food, wine, specialty cocktails Cons: valet was at corner not in front of restuarant more

barclay past its prime 9/1/2007

seems there's only one group in filthadelphia who know how to run a restaurant. i've eaten at striped bass, alma de cuba and now barclay prime in the last couple of months. they were all fair. Pros: decent steaks Cons: lighting too dim more

I was bored by all the pomp. 5/7/2007

This place is for rich folks who prefer to squander money on an 'experience' rather than getting a meal worthy of its pricetag. If it weren't, they wouldn't offer a $100 cheesesteak (gimme a break). The dining room is lovely, with a modern library feel to it that's actually a really neat vibe. Everything is done all fancy (and pretentious to the n'th degree). Everything is overpriced. You can end up paying $85 for a steak alone, not counting what you'll pay for sides, salad, appetizers, wine. Once you've ordered your steak, the waiter will come around with a plate of different kinds of knives and ask you to select which one you'd like for your steak. This is laying on the BS REALLY thick, now. I told the waiter I'd be satisfied with any one that cuts meat. The steak itself was decent, but I always prefer a juicy steak to the dry aged cuts they brag about. I found this to be an extravagant experience for an average meal at an outrageously inflated price. You're paying to be able to select your knife and feel important, if you're into that sort of thing. Pros: neat dining room, friendly wait staff, you can laugh at how silly this place is Cons: very pretentious, overpriced more

Good stuff. 1/16/2007

My wife and I made this our 2nd stop on an ongoing steakhouse tour. We both loved it. She had the filet and I had the 20 oz ribeye. Both were absolutely delicious. The truffled potatoes were as advertised in many other reviews I have read. Excellent. We had the crab cake as an appetizer, the only thing I would say about it is that there is tons of crab, but it could have been maybe a little more moist. The banana cream desert was awesome as well. The service was great, we loved the decor. The only thing is maybe the seating against the walls can put you a little close to another party. Pros: Food, service, decor Cons: If expense is an issue, this would be a con more
