Great for Yankees who don't know BBQ"" 3/6/2009

Tender BBQ, but no smoke. Poor vinegar sauce, the ""pickles"" were more like cucumbers with vinegar sprinkled on them. Who serves pickles with BBQ anyway? The cornbread was cake like, but not sweet, makes you wonder if they use cornmeal. The hushpuppies at $4 extra were overcooked and greasy. It's cozy only if small is the only criteria for cozy. If so yes, it's cozy. This place made me remember where I was...chapel hill. And I don't mean that in a good way. An embarrassment to NC BBQ. more

IF PRIOR REVIEWS FOUND THIS PLACE TO BE THE BEST THEY HAD, I CRINGE AT THE WORST. 1/8/2009

Pros: GOOD EXAMPLE OF BAD FOOD Cons: BAD EXAMPLE OF GOOD FOOD more

The BBQ is good, but check out the rest of the menu 12/30/2008

My lunch partner swears by the barbecue platter here, but I never order without checking what's cooking today. Recently, I had an excellent meal of boudin and tongue, a platter you'd have a hard time finding north of Lafayette, La. Yesterday, it was a large bowl of Brunswick Stew. And the gumbo is uniformly delicious. Pros: Variety and originality of the menu. Quality of the preparation. Cons: A bit out of the way, but that will be fixed in 2009 more

Best BBQ in the Triangle 7/29/2008

The Triangle is a BBQ desert in the middle of the BBQ oasis of North Carolina. There are very few places for BBQ in the Triangle worthy of NC's reputation in the craft of the porcine ambrosia. The BBQ joint is the best and is a decent example of Eastern style BBQ. The BBQ is moist, smokey, and importantly, consistent from visit to visit. It definitely passes the ""needs no sauce"" test. The sides are gourmet quality, especially the brussel sprouts with homemade smoked bacon. The menu has a wide selection which varies daily. Other high points are desserts such as sweet potato bread pudding with bourbon cream sauce. Pros: Great Eastern NC BBQ Cons: Not purist BBQ more

Excellent service, horrible food 6/30/2008

I went to the BBQ joint with two friends. We ordered a selection of dishes, including the BBQ pork, cornbread, hush puppies, coleslaw, pickles. The staff could not have been more helpful and accomodating, but the food was beneath contempt. The pulled pork had not a whiff of smoke savour, while the hushpuppies' chief flavour-note was library paste. The only highlight of the meal was the pickled cucumbers--lightly sweet, tangy and fresh. The cornbread was good, but not outstanding. There are much better alternatives in the Triangle, including the Q-Shack and Allen & Son. Avoid this place! Pros: Inexpensive Cons: ...but given the execrable quality of the food, still overpriced more

Poor service and poor food 5/20/2008

If you like terrible food and service in a dingy restaurant, this is the place for you. The food is inconsistent with odd flavors and the employees are more concerned with what is on TV than getting out your food. Visiting this establishment will test your patients and your stomach. Don?t say you weren?t warned! more

Great Food if You Steer Clear of the BBQ 5/14/2008

The BBQ Joint is one of my absolute favorite places to not eat BBQ. Their crabcakes are wonderful, their ribs, excellent, their BBQ chicken, outstanding. Their sides (especially sprouts, beer-baked beans, and collards) are equally delicious and they often have great deserts. Pros: Great (non-BBQ) food, Fast Service, Expansive Menu, Fresh Ingredients Cons: A bit pricy, They Run out of food sometimes more

Brilliant but spotty 2/8/2008

Great food at times. We like the barbecue. The vegetables were a screaming buy when the place first opened, at $1.50. At $3, some are still worth it. The Spanish speaking workers are well intentioned; the owners are totally energetic, but some of the native USA white staff is less than enthusiastic. Pros: Easy parking Cons: Closed Sunday -- but that's ok. more

Best BBQ, but the sides are even better 9/18/2007

The BBQ is outstanding, but the sides are even better-- cheese grits, baked beans, brussel sprouts in garlic and bacon (see Rachel Ray's review). Slow service? Not any of the two dozen times we've been there. Pros: Outstanding BBQ, wonderful side dishes Cons: Off the beaten path, can be crowded more

Amazing fried squash and decent barbecue 3/20/2007

A casual restaurant which not only serves decent barbecue (not the best I've had, but pretty good), but really excellent sides. The fried squash was made to order and the best I've ever had - perfectly cooked slices of squash with shatteringly crisp shell, with a little thyme and kosher salt. The cole slaw was flavorful and crunchy without being runny/watery. The hush puppies were good - perfectly fried without being greasy. They also serve some great salads and other entrees, a little more variety than the typical barbecue place. I like the barbecue - but I prefer a little more fatty meat - this barbecue is pretty lean and not as tender as I like. Overall, I'm looking forward to my next visit there! Pros: Awesome sides more

Awesome Gumbo! 6/4/2006

I am one of those rare people (I guess) that is not crazy about BBQ, however, my husband loves it and loves this place. I recently discovered that their gumbo is FABULOUS, and addictive! I love the tender morsels of their smoked chicken and they're not afraid to make it HOT! The sweet tea is perfect and the guys behind the counter are happy, I would even say PROUD to talk about their food. So don't be afraid if you're not a big BBQ fan - they have many other delicious offerings. Pros: not just BBQ, excellent food, excellent service Cons: not cheap, not fancy more

ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!!!!! 5/31/2006

We were a little wary due to it's location (not in business area), but we were WOWED when we went. The guys behind the counter were very nice to explain how to order and we were very pleased to get a seat. If you go during peak times, I hear it is difficult to get a table, but don't get dismayed. If there isn't a table available, get the food to go. It is so worth it! We both got the ribs. There was so much food and it was so wonderful, it was hard to stop eating when we got full! I wish we lived closer, because I think we would be frequent customers! Pros: tasty food, good service, bargain Cons: too far from home more

Great food, great service 9/4/2004

Though crowded (Sat night), we were served quite promptly. The food was great; the missus loved the Q; I am a vegetarian and highly recommend the Eggplant muffaletta (sp.?). Delicious, filling and great value for $$. Oh ... and the corn bread is the best we've ever had. When I mentioned that to one of the guys, he went out of his way to pack some for us to take home .. free! Highly recommend. Pros: Great food, Great value more

You can't beat this 6/8/2004

I grew up in North Carolina and know barbecue and have traveled in France extensively. I'm a great admirer of Wilson County Q and of our own Allen & Sons, but this beats all. The best Q I've ever had, along with the fixins. And the rest of the menu is extremely well prepared and a great mix of French bistro, down home food, and New Orleans cookery. The atmosphere is funky and fun, the service sometimes great, sometimes just OK, the servings are enormous. I go to France or Italy for this kind of experience. The value is enormous - both in the pocket and in the tummy. Pros: Delicious, Inexpensive, Adventurous more

Best Q in Chapel Hill/Durham 3/13/2004

The value at The Joint cannot be overstated. I rarely have room for dessert as the portions, lunch or dinner, are quite large. A downside is that with the everchanging menu, sometimes you see something you'd like to try but it's gone by your next visit. The gumbos are excellent (and excellent values as well). more

MENU IS GREAT 1/28/2004

The half roasted chicken is finger licking good and at $8-$9 is a really good deal. The barbecue is smoky and cheaper and comes out faster than it's local competition. The sides are really good too. It's nice to have some healthy options at a southern barbecue joint. Oh, and the desserts are to die for- real banana pudding, bread pudding, and their chess pies are real good. One of my favorite places in the area. Pros: Easy access, Quick, Inexpensive more

Only in Chapel Hill 8/21/2003

If it weren't called The Barbecue Joint, it would be a tolerable spot, with a range of food for all tastes. But I believe you'd better serve some decent 'que if you put the lovely word in your name, and this joint serves a bland, soggy, unimpressive and overpriced plate. If you want real 'que, do yourself a favor and head up the road a couple miles to Allen and Son. On the other hand, if you want to pretend you like barbecue while sipping an import, then drop by The Barbecue Joint. Pros: Wide range of food, Beer served, Friendly staff Cons: Lousy bbq!, Need I say more more

Good reviews? 8/18/2003

Quite a disappointment after positive critical reviews here and in local newspapers--did the staff know that food critics were visiting? While the barbecue was tasty, the portions were extremely small. Plus, my fiance` found a hair in her salad. The atmosphere was weird and the prices are high considering it's almost a fast-food type place (read: order at the counter, pick up your food, get your own drinks, bus your own table). The Barbecue Joint is at the bottom of the Triangle's barbecue restaurant list. Pros: Barbecue taste Cons: Cleanliness, Portion size, Taste more

Watch out for raw chicken 2/2/2003

I would not eat at this place again. My roast chicken was underdone as was my compainions. The spinach was overcooked and not hot. For almost $9.00, I can do better somewhere else more

Don't bother 1/3/2003

Service was lackadaisical and the food was below average. Allen & Son is just a few miles away, why put up with mediocre BBQ? Pros: parking Cons: slow service, poor food more
