Best

I have never had sushi before so I don't have anything to compare Bara to, but I must say that I was impressed! I never thought I would try sushi (the whole raw fish thing!) but i...

The atmosphere was very nice at first however as more people filed in it gradually became much much louder and you begin to realize you're dining in a house rather then a restaura...

the sushi tastes great but...... 8/19/2007

Having read the glowing reviews on citysearch, I was excited to go to Bara's. The first time I went, the food was excellent, but our food took about 40 minutes and they completely messed up the order. I decided to give it a second try several weeks later, but found no redemption as the food took over an hour and they could only complete half of our order because they RAN OUT OF RICE. more

best sushi around and a friendly staff 8/13/2007

today i decided to check out the Bara sushi house and i have to say it was amazing. Starting with the stylish decorations and the ultra friendly staff. The food was great i had the spider roll and i must say they are to die for, the oysters and seaweed salad are great appitizers as well. I am looking forward to going back and trying out different things. I must say I am impressed. more

fantastic new sushi place 8/9/2007

Since moving from NYC, I have been hunting for a new go-to sushi place, and so far Portland has been coming up short. No longer! Last night we headed to Bara, and were very pleased with everything. Sat at the bar, fantastic service, delicious fresh fish, and a creative menu. I highly recommend the Prozac (for eel lovers: eel, shrimp tempura, tuna, eel sauce = amazing) and the 'tokyo drift' - tuna and japanese potato. They also have great specials, and I have to disagree with previous posts; the fish was very fresh and tasty. Prices were fair (keep in mind I'm coming from Manhattan), but consistent with other places in portland I've been for sush We'll be heading back often! Pros: friendly service, creativity of menu, freshness of fish, outdoor seating location Cons: drink menu could be more extensive more

best local sushi 7/30/2007

I've tried most of the local sushi restaurants, and they are usually good, but Bara brings it to a whole new level with their Prozac roll. After eating at Bara the first time, I had to come back the next week to get another Prozac roll and try some other things, so far everything I've tried has been really good. All of the fish seems extremely fresh. more

just O.K. 7/28/2007

We have been to Bara twice. My initial attraction was the general atmosphere of the place, which is warm, homey, clean, and inviting. We ordered an appetizer and tempura and sushi the first time. The tempura was good, but it was not what I expected. The batter was very thick and spongy, not the thin tempura batter we are used to. It was nice for a change, but i still prefer the thin, traditional kind. more

Great experience 6/29/2007

We went here on a whim one night (just a short walk from our house), and were very pleasantly surprised! The fish in the sushi was all very fresh and tasty, and tempura very good. Service was prompt and friendly. Prices good. Nice atmosphere: they have a private room for larger parties, as well as limited outdoor seating. Definitely my new favorite sushi place! The only strange thing was they were playing electronica music...it was playing quietly, so it didn't distract or make conversation difficult...it just seemed out of place. Don't let that stop you from giving this place a try! Pros: Fresh food, nice atmosphere Cons: none! more

Best Sushi House in Portland 6/11/2007

This was our first visit to Bara Sushi house.. My fiancee' and I drove down from Seattle WA. This was one of our main reasons for the 2 day road trip and I will say"" it was well worth the drive"" Pros: Ambience was great, food was great.. Cons: Not one in Seattle WA. more

Yummy food w/ great atmosphere 6/9/2007

Good Yakisoba. If you've got a larger party, ask to reserve the back room. There's traditional floor seating and you can plug in your Ipod. Pros: tasty more

Wonderful sushi with a comfortable inviting enviroment 6/3/2007

Bara has the perfect combination for success! This new sushi house is amazing. They have the freshest fish and amazing appetizers with the best service in town. I live on the Eastside of Portland and it's really hard to find good sushi places. When you walk into this redone victorian house don't expect a train of plates with old warm sushi. The sushi chef is very knowledable and has the best recommendations. If you are a oyster fan like myself, you need to try ""Da Sauce""! It is the BEST! This little sushi house is bringing big taste to the Portland area and I will definately be a regular. Pros: Tatami room! Great sushi and service Cons: Not for large groups of 10+ more

Great food, enviting atmosphere! 6/1/2007

This restaraunt offers a unique dining experience which provides exceptional service, beautiful private dining rooms, exceptional sushi (obviously some of the best quality available), reasonable prices, and an overall comfortable but prestigious environment! Pros: Great for couples and / or small groups Cons: ??? more

High quality sushi in an intimate atmosphere 6/1/2007

Bara Sushi is a brand new Sushi bar located in the newly trendy Clinton neighborhood of SE Portland. My girlfriend and I went to Bara right after it opened and were pleasantly surprised. By being housed in a remodeled Victorian the dining space lends itself to an intimate experience. Small groups or couples would probably work best. They offer a variety of dining options including a private room, booths, and tables. Contributing to the atmosphere was the friendly staff and smart decor, but the real star here is the food. We both agreed that the Sushi was quite possibly the best we've ever had. Being adventurous souls, we opted for the chefs selection and were not disappointed (highly recommended). The Sushi chef was friendly and gave us a wonderful guided tour through his different selections. The best part is that the great food doesn't end with the Sushi and Sashimi, the side dishes seemed to vary between Japanese and Southeast Asian and were outstanding (Try the ""beef salad"" - not what its called but i think they'll know what you mean another favorite was the baked mussels). Definitely going back! Pros: Food, Ambience, Service Cons: Might be too small for a large groups over 6 more
