Bangkok Restaurant

Wow! I've only been to this restaurant once before and I loved but upon returning a second time I ordered the wonton soup, because me and my girlfriend are sick and it sounded great! But much to my surprise It's more than that, and thats all I'm going to say about it. You have to try it for yourself! more

This place is my favorite Thai restaurants in the Portland metro area. It is family owned and operated. Their staff remembers me and what I order and how I like it. While the setting is lackluster, the taste is divine! Once you try their coconut flan, you'll be hooked! Pros: Taste / Their Flan Cons: Its not closer to my house. more

We decided to try the Bangkok Restaurant on a whim and overall, it was okay. The two of us split a salt & pepper squid (calamari) which was excellent. I'd say this dish was better than most other asian restaurants. It was light and crispy with a nice flavor. At 8.75, it seemed to be a decent value. We also split a black bean vegetable prawn dish for 9.50. I thought this dish was a total miss. The sauce was not that great and it was predominately veggies. Only 6 shrimp in the entire dish. And though they call it prawns, (I'm thinking large shrimp) they really were just small/average sized shrimp. I thought this dish was way overpriced for what it was and wouldn't recommend it. With so many great asian restaurants around I doubt I'll be back. P.S. I made it a point to mention that we were first time customers and didn't get any free dessert. more

My family and I have been eating here for years for several reasons. The Staff is EXTREMELY friendly and attentive, and the food is cheap and has excellent flavor. We have tried almost everything on the menu and haven't found anything we don't like. I would recommend this place to everyone. P.S.- Free dessert for first time customers. We chose to try 'Bangkok Restaurant' for the first time simply because we had a coupon from the 'Entertainment Guide' and it was near by. All-in-all I would say it was pleasant and tasty. Like the previous critique, I'm usually a bit skeptical when it comes to restaurants that offer multiple cuisines. I usually take that to mean: Jack of many trades, master of none. In this case it simply meant average. It wasn't horrible, and it wasn't great. The 'special curry' (yellow curry with chicken) cost $7.95 which I think is about average. The curry was tasty. I ordered it mild but it still had the perfect amount of spice. The one thing I think could have been better was the quality of chicken. Again, it wasn't horrible, but I ran into one or two pieces I found a bit chewy. It definately wasn't nearly enough to put me off and I enjoyed eating the rest of my meal. I also had a few bites of the 'spicy prawn noodles' which were quite tasty. We were also offered a complimentary desert when the waitress realized we were new customers. The desert was a type of coconut pudding topped with a sweet caramel type syrup. Quite tasty. Not sure if this is normal routine for new customers or not, but it was definately an unexpected delight. The service was very friendly and prompt. The atmosphere was nothing special. There's definately room for improvement in that department. ...Though I did learn a little something about dragon fruit from one of the several posters they had on the walls giving descriptions of exotic fruits/vegetables. As for its authenticity, I've never been to Thailand, so I'm not a good judge. But I've enjoyed several Thai restaurants around the Portland area and I'd place this one right in the middle. If you want nicer Thai there are definately nicer places that cost a nicer penny, but for the price it's quite decent and you're likely to have left-overs for the next day. After having a horrible experience with another joint down the street, I came in here VERY hungry and made an order to go. First, before I rip the place a new one, let me say the service staff was EXTREMELY friendly. Very helpful and polite, but that's where my good marks end. I ordered the absolute STAPLE of any Thai restaurant that tells you if they are worth their wight, Chicken Pad Thai. Let me be very explicite here, this was the absolute WORST Pad Thai that I have EVER had in my ENTIRE life. Don't just take my word for it. I had them split the order in two, which they did with a smile, so that I could drop some food off for my wife who work for the Portland Police Bureau just down the street; no joking here, she sent me a text message before I ever even spoke to her that said "The food sucked a*s" It was dry, it was SALTY, the lime was dry, and the bean sprouts were spoiled, NO peanut sauce and NO peanuts... Hello?!?! The food, seriously, tasted more like Chicken Chow Mein. I have no idea what Thai restaurants that the other reviewers have eaten at, as obviously their taste in Thai is based on canned dog food, because this was NOT Thai food. Let me repeat that, it was NOT Thai food. I should have had a clue though... The sign outside says "Thai and Vietnamese." Those are two completely different foods, as this really tasted like what a Vietnamese person would make Pad Thai like and I don't mean that bad as I love good Vietnamese food, but this was HORRIBLE. I must clarify for this GREAT restaurant that their food is NOT TOO SPICY. The FRIENDLY servers usually would explain to the customers about their unique spice levels: mild = no spice, mild+ = a little kick, medium = spicy, hot = most people would definitely get their tongue burnt, xxxx and beyond = you'd be sweating. Of course, these spice levels are rated based upon "most people preferences". Therefore, it'd be a different story if you're a spice-lover like me. My Ratings: Food: EXCELLENT; would recommend the salad rolls, hot and sour soup, thai ice tea, coconut flan, BBQ pork noodle, drunken noodle (believe it or not, this dish does NOT contain any alcohol), chicken salad (low fat, fresh, and healthy)... Service: FRIENDLY; the people there will try their best to get you what you want and make sure you'll leave happy. Price: INEXPENSIVE; you don't have to spend much to get your tummy satisfy ^_^ Environment: their parking is kind of small, which makes it hard to find a spot during their busy days (usually weekend) but it's worth walking a block or two. Really excellent, excellent dishes. Highly recommend the special (yellow) curry. Service was fast and friendly, portions were good sized, and price is excellent ($7-9/plate). Atmosphere is casual- laid back, not formal (maybe not first date material, but definately quiet night out accomodating). Oh! And first timers get free flan! My mom & I ordered "medium" hot for our dishes and they were so spicy we couldn't eat them! Their fried tofu was very dry and crunchy, not like other fried tofu I've had. The food here is excellent and for the price it is more than phenomenal! It's a family owned and run unassuming restaurant. Every dish is a delight and the Thai Iced Tea brings out the flavor in the spices. I'm amazed that they offer a free desert for each new customer. One of my favorite appetizers is the bean curd. This is seriously the best Thai curry I have tried. For six bucks you get a meal and the best leftovers ever. The Masaman and Special Curries are the BOMB. The service is eager to please and they graciously accomodate customized orders. Pros: Rich Taste, Inexpensive, Excellent service more

I have eaten here a couple of times and food has always been great, and the prices are reasonable and the service is great. Their flan for dessert is also good, which they give as a complimentary dessert when dining in. And also try their Thai chicken salad, very good. WOW. That Hot and Sour with coconut milk soup is so good! The Vegatarian Salad Rolls are excellent. The pad thai yummy! The curry chicken with peanut sauce, the best! It's a casual atmosphere with excellent and relatively inexpensive food. I've been here maybe half a dozen times this year, and everything I've tried so far has been excellent. Their hot and sour soup with coconut milk is to die for! The staff is extremely friendly and will answer any questions you have about the dishes, and you can substitute veggies and tofu for any of the meats to create vegetarian dishes. Highly recommended!
