Editorial review from Citysearch 6/29/2013

We came to Balkanika on a Wednesday night close to 10pm. This was my first time trying Balkan food, so I wasn't sure what to expect. The place was relatively empty, and we were seated immediately. \r \r We were four of us, and ordered far too much food because everything looked so great - and most of it lived up to our expectations. \r \r We got the sampler of all 15 mezes, 10 of them at least were yumm. We all liked different ones, but it was definitely worth sampling. \r \r We didn't realize how much food it would be- and ordered the Spinach Burek, Lamb Shishkababs (which was a special that night), Lamb sausages, and 4 Mediterranean sides with our meze starter. The sides were very so-so, almost tasteless, but the lamb sausages, and spinach burek were amazingg. We also got a bottle of wine, which was decent. \r \r Balkanika is definitely worth trying at least once. The ambience is sweet, nothing over the top, the service is good and the food above average. Overall, I would recommend it to friends visiting the city. more

LOVE THIS PLACE 10/5/2011

Came here the other night, ate more food then I ever have. We took the suggestion of the owner, Pondo, and let him decide what we were going to eat. We did not know the type of food and he created a feast!\r \r Had a chicken dish and a spead of ""Mezes"". Basically a spread served with whole wheat pita. It was incredible. I'm not sure I can eat like that for a long time or I'm gonna have to get new clothes. more

Incredible and Authentic 10/4/2011

Went in to Balkanika the other day for dinner. It is hard to dine out with a large group and have authentic food. We searched on CitySearch and after looking at the menu, decided to try Balkanika.\r \r We were more than happy we did! My wife and I love this type of food and have for years . However, our dining partners are often skeptical of anything too ""ethnic"". That is to say, not steak or spaghetti! They loved every part of the meal. It also had excellent wine options. We will definitely be coming to Balkanika again! more

A cornucopia of meat-free dishes awaits your visit 9/30/2010

Like its sister restaurant up the street, Kashkaval, Balkanika specializes in fresh vegetable dishes and a casual, semi-rustic atmosphere. Most of the food is cold, but they can heat them up for you if you want. Vegetarians will find lots to love here, with interesting dishes based on various beans, peppers, tomato, even celery root. Meet dishes are available too, but I was so happy to see such a range of meatless dishes, that I stuck with those. Warm pita accompanies the meal, and beer and wine are available - as at Kashkaval, lots of wine is available (but I can't say more because I did not expore it). The environment is halfway between a Balkan or Middle Eastern deli and a pleasant country restaurant. The prices are reasonable, the food is healthy... I'll be back! more
