Bland Balans 3/18/2008

Balans manages to put Bland back into the Beach. The ambience is predictable and the restaurant as a whole, certainly offers nothing to set it apart from the dozens of others that ply their trade on South Beach?s Lincoln Road. However, the service was prompt, if a little fussy.\r \r My date and I decided on a tapas-style meal and ordered four dishes from the appetizer menu that included the wilted garlic spinach, fried calamari, the Greek plate and mixed vegetables. \r \r The wilted garlic spinach arrived first and was the best for the four dishes ? It was hot, but the meal went downhill from there. This dish can easily be made in a few minutes, and is delicious when prepared using fresh crushed garlic, a little sea salt and a sprinkling of nutmeg, none of which were apparent in the insipid, watery serving we sampled. Next up were the ?mixed? vegetables that consisted of what looked some else?s leftover eggplant with a couple of slices of squash thrown in ? it arrived cold. The Greek plate was a complete mistake ? three globs of bland mush, served with several strips of supermarket pita bread. Finally, a warmed-over plate of fried calamari crowned an experience that can only be described as disappointing at best. \r \r Balans offers diner food to the budget minded, in a confused atmosphere that attempts to be hip, but essentially fails. There are so many other restaurant choices in South Beach, I suggest a trip to Balans should be reserved for when the mother-in-law comes to town ? peace-of-mind is only one check away. \r \r \r more

$2 off breakfast weekdays before 11:30! Jumbo Breafast a BARGAIN. US1 Burger worth the trip. 11/6/2006

Balans is one of those places you can go when you don't know quite what you want. They have a very broad selection on the menu, but serve standard items like burgers, breakfast, wraps, salads as well. Located on Lincoln Rd (one of the world's great places to people watch) with a large shaded outdoor area (and an indoor dining area as well) Balans is casual and realatively inexpensive given its higher priced neighbors (Breakfast or lunch $6-$15, Dinner $12-$20 without alcohol). The servers are friendly and efficient. \r \r The Jumbo Breakfast includes coffee, juice, two eggs as you wish, toast, bacon, sausage and potatoes and they take $2 off if you order before 11:30am! I don't remmeber the price for sure, but I want to say it's $8.95 (before the discount). The US1 burger is a great choice, as are their wraps. Dinner entrees are always good. The Chimichurri steak is one of my favorites. \r \r Full bar. BR, L, D late. $$ Pros: Cheap, good breakfast! On Lincoln Road (people watching). Inexpensive good food. Cons: Busy at times, but rarely a line. more

User review by kitschy 7/8/2005

wonderful food, good location, nice restaurant... it was the rude wait staff and the terrible coffee that ruined this place for me. it was difficult to accomodate our group of 5 inside as well. Pros: wonderful food, moderately priced, ecellent location Cons: rude wait staff, terrible coffee more

Dinning a la Marlboro. 10/26/2003

This could be a very good place, but I had to stop going, because I no longer could endure the smoke. There is an ash tray on every table. There might as well be a toilet. The food and service are actually pretty good, but the cigar and cigarette smoke are overwhelming, even for outdoor dinning. Pros: good food, good service, good location Cons: stinks from cigar and, cigarette smoke more

Great Food...Poor Service 12/28/2002

Ecelectic mix of cuisine, very well prepared. However, poor service and a cavalier policy toward toward reservations which is unacceptable. Stay away. more
