Extra Cheesy Service...... 1/9/2012

I am really disappointed in the quality of service I received at Avondale Pizza Café on 1/3/12. I entered into the establishment alone, sat myself, and waited for around 10 minutes before anyone even addressed me. Let me add that it wasn’t even busy for it still to be considered lunchtime (around 12:40 pm). Finally a server stopped by to ask if I had been helped and took my order which consisted of a slice of pepperoni pizza, a small chef salad (minus olives), and hot tea. Well I was delivered my salad (plus a load of olives) and hot tea almost immediately and then my server disappeared. I had a friend to walk in around 5 minutes after I received my salad and tea, but she too sat for around 10 minutes until I finally suggested that she walk to the counter to place her order since my server was nowhere to be found. Again we waited, and waited, and waited. I finally walked to the counter to ask to speak with a manager since my slice of pepperoni was MIA and it was taking forever for my friend to receive her order as well. I spoke with Mike, the manager/pizza maker, who refused to even walk to the front counter because he was busy making pizza and requested that I come off to the side where he was located. I explained to him that I had been waiting a very long time and even witnessed another party walk in minutes behind me but seem to have had a full lunch plus refills in front of them. He didn’t offer an apology for the poor service but said that he would take care of our checks. As Mike and I were talking, a different server butted in and said that she had our orders and proceeded to deliver it to our table. To our dissatisfaction, we were delivered lukewarm pizza and a check with less than impressive discounts…….Thanks “Mike” (sarcasm)!! Well I tried to make the best of it and ate most of my slice. I had to leave earlier then my friend, vowing to never return. However, shortly after my friend called and explained to me that I had been banned from the restaurant based on the chitter chatter she heard amongst the servers. I guess I was supposed to tip server 1 and server 2 for ignoring us, providing poor service, and lukewarm pizza. Avondale Pizza Café, I am not a fool. I do not pour my money into any establishment where I am not treated well as a customer, so you banning me is a joke. I’m sure you realize as a small business that every dollar counts. No one in their right mind should accept bad service especially when our money is what keeps your doors open. I don’t live in this area but I work in this area for a state entity that constantly looks for different eating establishments to cater to our students, faculty, and staff. I will be inquiring as to whether this establishment is on our vendor list, and if so, request that you be removed. I am really disappointed in the quality of service from your servers and the lack of concern from management. more

No longer "family friendly" 7/14/2010

I've been going to Avondale Pizza since the early 90s and admit when they opened a new location with a full service bar (O'Keefe's), I wondered if they could remain "family friendly" and after last night, I learned they can't. The restaurant and bar are in two adjacent storefronts with an opening in between. In the bar area, there are several video games and a foosball table. Last night two little boys played on that foosball table and admittedly got loud giggling and just having fun. BUT, since my days visiting frat houses in college, foosball is typically a "loud" game. Seated at the bar were several individuals "drinking" their dinner. They were attempting to chat amongst themselves and kept getting annoyed with the little boys. The boy's father several times put money in the game, but the patrons wouldn't address him. Yet I did see them confront the boys. (I bet if it was 2 college-aged boys, they wouldn't have said anything). The bartender, who waited tables for years, asked the busboys to remove the foosball table to the cheers of the drunks at the bar. The father got visibly upset and even got in the face of one guy - who must have had three drinks in just the time we were there - for not saying anything to him. Luckily he (the guy on the bar stool) was too "elixed" to react. Between the music, the television, and the noise from the restaurant area, Avondale is already loud; that's what "family friendly" stipulates. If I want a quiet night out, I don't go to a "family friendly" restaurant. Or, if I want to talk to somebody at a bar, I go to a quiet "tavern," not a bar in a family restaurant. Obviously, they can't serve both. Taco Mac seems to be able to cater to the delicate balance between both types of patrons, but they don't have games in the bar area and their drinkers don't seem as "hardcore" as the ones who frequent O'Keefe's. With a long-time employee (possibly a manager or owner) removing the foosball table, it was obvious the regular bar patrons are more important than the families that provided the sales to fund the expansion. I know from experience that it is difficult to cater to both crowds especially since the families clear out at 9:00, but this experiment isn't working. I recognize that Avondale Pizza is very supportive of my community and has a special delivery arrangement at my pool. Too bad they lost my business until I see a change - like a door closing the bar off from the restaurant. (I'll also remove this review.) I'll see if the new pizzeria in town (Savage) can accommodate my large parties, team events and provide a "family friendly" atmosphere. I'll also have them deliver to my pool. Obviously they also lost the business of at least two other families, to the joy of their bleery-eyed bar patrons. I'm disappointed because their pizza was good, but their inclinations I now question. Additionally, maybe all the police officers that frequent the restaurant can keep an extra eye on some of those bar patrons because several looked too intoxicated to drive. We don't need that driving through the center of my community; that's also not "family friendly." Cons: Bar flies more important than families more

Tasty and Quaint 1/21/2005

What a great place for a first date....a comfortable atmosphere, a simple place, and great pizza. It's a fun place to hang out in a great (undiscovered to most of Atlanta) neighborhood. It's usually got a game on the tv, a bunch of people on the outdoor patio, and great pizza in the oven. I love it in the spring and summer on the patio! And if you're not in the mood for pizza, try the lasagna, a Greek salad, and definitely the cheese pretzels. Pros: Inexpensive, Good Service, Patio more
